To only start snack eating once movie starts?

PimmsOfCourse · 18/07/2022 11:04

So, if you are sitting down to watch a movie/ programme and you have your snacks ready, do you wait until it's actually started, everyone has got themselves sorted (if at home) or do you start eating at any time?

If at a cinema, do you start your popcorn in the trailers or wait for the main event?

This is just me thinking about this as dd who I hadn't discussed this with, said to me, "Eating snacks with the film is the best!" I tend to agree with her.

YABU - eat whenever you want
YANBU - eat when the main film/ programme starts

Yes we always had that rule too between my friends when we'd go as teens/early 20's and its stuck
You cant cant cant start chomping until the bbfc slide comes up

DrDetriment · 18/07/2022 11:50

I go to the Everyman cinema who bring wine, humus, chorizo etc to your seat, so I start as soon as it arrives!

Bellaboo01 · 18/07/2022 12:02

I think - do whatever you want.

How bizarre! This would never occur to me to even notice when I am eating the snacks - let alone when everyone else is.

Are you ok with your group drinking some of their drink before the movie starts?

alphapie · 18/07/2022 12:09

Depends on the snack

If it's ice cream I eat it as soon as I sit down, I do sometimes go out to get the ice cream just before the film starts though

Ice blast, same as above

Popcorn I will start nibbling before the film starts, purely as the trailers bore me!!

This. Rustling of popcorn/packets of sweets during trailers, I don’t care. Rustling during the film gives me the rage

I did actually ask the person next to me when his popcorn was going to be finished during a film once as it was like Mary Poppins bag - he never quite seemed to get to the bottom of it and made so much noise. To be fair he apologised and didn’t eat anymore. And it was about half way through the film so I put up with it long enough

It’s the cinema, popcorn is the most endorsed snack. I think it was you being rude asking him to stop!

HideousKinky · 18/07/2022 12:23

I'm with Tisyphone and prefer silence/lack of distraction during the film

Mercurial123 · 18/07/2022 12:28

I don't snack, hearing other people eat puts me off going to the cinema.

PimmsOfCourse · 18/07/2022 12:29

@DahliaMacNamara that's the thing- if your family then finishes their snacks first and then tries to take some of yours 😮

I do my best to wait until the movie starts

Hbh17 · 18/07/2022 12:33

Eating in the cinema is a horrible habit. If you absolutely have to do it, please get it over with before the film starts for the sake of everyone else around you.
Or maybe just eat before you go in, which is the obvious solution.

Galileu · 18/07/2022 12:37

On a general note, policing other people when they're eating and drinking isn't something I do.

I make sure my family eat a healthy diet and stay hydrated, but I"m fairly hands off after that.

QuattroFromagio · 18/07/2022 12:39

I like popcorn to be a bit hot, with butter on it, like you get at cinemas in north america. So that has to be eaten as soon as you get it, though I would rather you could get it just before the show starts, as I'd prefer to eat it during the film. Same with ice cream but for the opposite reason, not wanting it to melt.

NippyWoowoo · 18/07/2022 12:43

Start my popcorn the second it's in my hands

Don't be ridiculous "everyone else around you" is probably munching popcorn too. I hate the sound of eating but it's not like you can even really hear people when the film is playing

chocolateoranges33 · 18/07/2022 12:51

At the cinema I've normally finished my snack before the trailers start!!

PimmsOfCourse · 18/07/2022 12:55

It's probably more at home that this AIBU applies to I think. In a cinema, with the popcorn in your hands, all warm and nothing else to do, it's a no brainer.....

They're gone long before the film starts because I'm a greedy pig

Wotsitagain · 18/07/2022 12:58

Eat whenever you want, but do not, and I mean DO NOT be that person who decides to wait until the movie starts before they start opening up all the wrappers. The sound of people rummaging around bags of crisps and sweets is murder inducing.

Sally090807 · 18/07/2022 13:07

I’ve usually finished my treats by the time the trailers have finished 😂

Oh wow!! 😅 I can’t believe you actually asked him, and he apologised and stopped eating it for your benefit!

Every time I’ve ever been to the cinema I’ve heard people eating/drinking on and off throughout the whole film, I would EXPECT to hear these noises and would have to go round the entire cinema asking every other person how long they’d be, which would be more of a disturbance than any rustling!

Sweatinglikeabitch · 18/07/2022 13:29

At home the movie starts when the snacks are ready, my would I be sat with snacks and the movie not be on?
At the cinema I try to not get there until the trailers are nearly done. I hate waiting to eat snacks but I also hate finishing my snacks too early.

starfishmummy · 18/07/2022 13:38

I'm feeling much age here. Be absent when I was young there were always two films - something shirt and then the main one, with someone selling ice creams etc round in between. I miss that!!

Me too! Oh and @QuattroFromagio the memory of the popcorn from the cinema I used to go to in my early teens (in England) has just been awakened.. the salted popcorn with butter - and you could ask them to ladle a bit more butter on too! YUM

Funkyslippers · 18/07/2022 13:54

I try to wait until the film starts unless it's a film like A Quiet Place where it's absolute silence for the first 45 mins!

theyhavenothingbuttheaudacity · 18/07/2022 13:55

Ahhh I've already seen so many MN bingo posts to cheer me up!
From gloomy arthouse films to Nobody needing to eat more than three meals a day let alone snacks at a cinema accompanied by the obligatory cats bum mouth 🙈

Over in the real world op- warm food before hand and anything like sweets and popcorn during
