To find the Tory leadership race just awfully self indulgent?

I'm on the app so I don't think I can enable voting...

Watching the news over the last few days, with all of the campaigning for the new Tory leader it just made me so angry that this is going to drag on until September.

Grant Shapps was on television yesterday, being asked about what is going to be done by the Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi about the impending worsening of cost of living over the next few months, and he pretty much said not a lot as there would be a new Chancellor when we get a new Prime Minister anyway.

So basically no one in the top jobs are doing any real work at the moment as they know they will be out in September anyway? Then on top of that we have to watch the candidates telling us how amazing they are when the vast vast majority of people won't have a say on who we end up with anyway.

They should be moving so much faster to get someone in and get tackling the real problems before people are even worse off than they currently are.

Eugh. Morons.

They all go on holiday soon anyway don't they?

Blossomtoes · 14/07/2022 11:56

How are they going to do it faster when the process involves polling 200,000 people? As a pp said, they all go into recess next week just like they do every year.

alphapie · 14/07/2022 11:58

Yeah I'm over seeing tories taking up the news cycle. Although at least this time it's not over scandals and sex crimes

chaosmaker · 14/07/2022 12:06

I don't understand how any of them will have any sort of mandate anyway. johnson got in on 'getting brexit done' and then they had massive get out of jail free cards in the forms of covid and now the war in ukraine. Think there was another excuse they used but can't remember now in the vast tsunami that has been our 'government' for the last too many years.

ELM8 · 14/07/2022 12:14

I do think they could do it faster - recognise the state of the country at the moment and the direction we are heading in and put the needs of the population over their own ambition as these are extenuating circumstances.

Work together to decide two candidates then put it to the vote, rather than taking up time campaigning and voting multiple times (for example, I'm sure there are multiple reasons that can't be done).

I understand the process and the recess I just hate seeing it all over the news and as I said just find them all so self indulgent.

Absolutely agree op. It’s not like when summer recess comes the world grinds to a halt while they have holidays.

Get it down to two, that will only take a few days, then another week for member votes.

This delay is only because Johnson wants it. It benefits no one but him. Which I guess is consistent to how he’s run this government if nothing else.

chaosmaker · 14/07/2022 21:14

1 less, not that it makes much difference overall

ELM8 · 14/07/2022 22:10

Just emphasises my point, unnecessarily dragging on 🤦🏼‍♀️ ridiculous.

Nerd66 · 18/07/2022 20:32

I’m finding the whole thing tedious and how much the media are covering it just unbelievably tone deaf to what’s happening in the country right now. I’m interested to know what mother would vote for any of them

NamelessNancy · 18/07/2022 20:46

Totally agree. Given the tiny proportional of the population who will actually get a say in the next PM the coverage it's getting is ridiculous. Taking the piss even.

LuckyLil · 18/07/2022 20:50

I've always found ANYTHING Tory related self indulgent.

balalake · 18/07/2022 20:55

This thing called preferential voting could have been used. Or even just a second preference as happened when someone called Boris Johnson was elected twice as London Mayor.

ELM8 · 18/07/2022 22:48

Yep, one more candidate out tonight.. limping towards a decision.

Blossomtoes · 18/07/2022 23:21

The end date is 5 September. They were always going to have to allow a month for the membership to vote, regardless of how they conduct the process to get to that vote. They go into recess on Friday in any case.

FrankLampardsBrokenHand · 18/07/2022 23:27

By this Thursday the 2 candidates will be known and then voting amongst party members will be rolled out. Its not exactly a massively drawn out process.

Mischance · 18/07/2022 23:32

They can't even have a civilised TV debate with supposed colleagues who are on the same side of the political fence, so how can they run the country and deal with difficult national leaders?

The Sky debate has been cancelled because they cannot behave in a civilized manner.

Lonelycrab · 18/07/2022 23:39

The 5th September is quite a few weeks away.

Well that’s maybe true but I doesn’t make it right. Why do the membership need a month to vote? GE’s take 24hours for the whole country.

MPs being in recess doesn’t stop decisions from being made, and we have a hungover sponger wondering where it all went wrong at the helm. Dreamy. This is all theatre and really there should already be a caretaker as there is no real power or influence from BJ. ,

Id rather this was done quicker.

TooBigForMyBoots · 18/07/2022 23:42

YABU OP, I'm loving watching the Conservative party destroy itself.😆

I would be if we weren’t all going to have to endure the fall out for the next two years. .

I don’t think they are though, it’s a relatively civil process so far, and any lost votes are being more than offset by the women’s votes that Angela Rayner is costing them.

If this is theatre then it's no wonder this shower refuse to fund the majority of the arts. There is no need for this party to be at the helm any more. All the fudging and excuses when they've had the power for 12 years and - as they keep telling us - a huge majority which should have meant they could have solved all our problems quickly. I'm so thankful for the Lords being able to hold them to account or they really would have sold everything that wasn't welded down.

DowningStreetParty · 19/07/2022 01:23

I’m horrified that lawbreaking, lying, terrible PM Boris gets to decide himself when he actually goes. And that most of his Tory party MP colleagues who a week or so ago were saying he must go, are now quite happy to work with him again. Either he’s fit to govern or not, they’ve all said not, so..?
I think it’s appalling that we didn’t/still don’t get to have a snap general election to decide on a new PM. This situation is the classic Tory ‘Party before Country’ approach, but with an added layer of Johnson’s own personal self-interest being indulged on top.

This leadership contest shitshow is a self serving Tory distraction for the media from the many urgent issues that the country is facing at the moment. It feels like it’s a really off-putting window into Parliamentary politics for normal voters.

It is so self-indulgent and frankly dangerous for all of us with all of the other crises facing our country that need to be tackled very urgently to keep Johnson and his latest cabinet limping on. The local and global challenges the UK faces are obviously not best to be first thought about in Sept/October/or whenever Boris finally goes and a different Tory face takes over.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/07/2022 01:28

It's been so long since there was an effective opposition, all they've done for a few years is fight amongst themselves.

So fucking depressing.

"they really would have sold everything that wasn't welded down."
You mean what's still left after the obsessive selling off of the family silver in the Thatcher Years?
They did manage to sell the Post Office - for just £180m under its real real value.
And they are fixated on privatising the NHS - which is already happening on the sly, and if Tories have their way, the only really "public" bit left of the NHS will be the public funding - of everything privatised. The Loony Right is not much better than the Loony Left.
