To find the Tory leadership race just awfully self indulgent?

I'm on the app so I don't think I can enable voting...

Watching the news over the last few days, with all of the campaigning for the new Tory leader it just made me so angry that this is going to drag on until September.

Grant Shapps was on television yesterday, being asked about what is going to be done by the Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi about the impending worsening of cost of living over the next few months, and he pretty much said not a lot as there would be a new Chancellor when we get a new Prime Minister anyway.

So basically no one in the top jobs are doing any real work at the moment as they know they will be out in September anyway? Then on top of that we have to watch the candidates telling us how amazing they are when the vast vast majority of people won't have a say on who we end up with anyway.

They should be moving so much faster to get someone in and get tackling the real problems before people are even worse off than they currently are.

Eugh. Morons.

Civil? They've cancelled tonight's hustings because of the acrimony.😆😆😆

Exactly so - as I said upthread. I absolutely agree with you.

Whoever wins is going to have to enter negotiations with other national leaders and be civil and diplomatic. They can't even do it with their own colleagues!

Blossomtoes · 19/07/2022 09:37

any lost votes are being more than offset by the women’s votes that Angela Rayner is costing them

When people can’t afford to heat their houses or feed their kids, it’s highly unlikely Angela Rayner is going to affect their vote. Women’s issues are far more niche than you think they are.

Yes all very self indulgent.
How can they all have such different views too when they are all conservative and they got in on a certain manifesto?

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/07/2022 09:56

@MsFrenchie also seems to be unaware that Labour are completely irrelevant in all this and Penny TWAW Mordaunt could be Prime Minister within weeks.

The Tory 3 Word Slogans get more ridiculous by the day. I'm embarrassed for the supporters, who will repeat any old shite they're fed.😳🤣🤣🤣

Veetavix · 19/07/2022 10:02

I am finding it so overwhelmingly boring. I think even the candidates are bored of themselves.

It’s going to be Rishi (surely?), and the other candidates are basically interviewing for a job in his cabinet.

Rather than television debates with audiences that reflect the population, I want to see exactly who these members are (… because I visualise them all as looking like that porn/tractor bloke - am I right to?). I would quite happily watch a documentary about that (does anyone have any stats on this? education? Income? gender? Reason for joining the party?

Who are these people that really rate Liz Truss and Penny Mourdant? What has gone so wrong for them?

Blossomtoes · 19/07/2022 10:10

Those stats are readily available @Veetavix - Tory party membership is predominantly male and middle aged or more. I question anyone who rates any of them, particularly Badenock who’s apparently endorsed by Britain First - you simply couldn’t make it up.

I don’t think they are though, it’s a relatively civil process so far, and any lost votes are being more than offset by the women’s votes that Angela Rayner is costing them.

#LabourLosingWomen

Ah not even a page in and along comes the "what about Labour......"

civilised? fuck i'd hate to see what they'd do if they hated each other.... "what do you regret more, being a Libdem or voting Remain Liz?

If looks could have killed, Sunak would have been hung drawn and quartered.... funniest moment of the conflict.

the Tories have now become a comic party, the image the public have of them is one of ridicule.

will be very hard for any new leader to salvage, maybe Tugenhat might have done it but none of the others.

chaosmaker · 19/07/2022 10:15

I think we'd be better off with a coalition of the best from all the parties. Also a change in the voting system and a ban on being able to change political boundaries to favour the party in power. Neither the current system of voting or the boundary changes are in any way democratic.

SleeplessInEngland · 19/07/2022 10:17

It's fun watching them walk the tightrope of being a candidate for change while also trying to not pretend their party's last 12 years in power haven't been a clusterfuck. Pick one, assholes.

People who can’t afford to heat their houses were very unlikely to be voting Conservative anyway. In electoral terms they can safely be ignored.

Women’s issues are not niche, they are of major importance to many millions of people.

YABU OP, I'm loving watching the Conservative party destroy itself.😆

If you think that it shows how you live in a little guardian bubble where all tories are nasty and all lefties are heroes. It's people like you that make me hope Kemi gets in and at least balances the woke, lefty fusspot culture and shuts up the middle class mummies for a few years.

Labour are completely irrelevant here, and I’m pretty much every other context. Those rebelling in the idea that this will hand the next election to Labour would do well to understand how foolish an idea this is.

Red wall? The number of people who can’t afford to heat their homes will grow exponentially next winter - are Tory voters going to be unaffected by some magical process of sorcery? As concerns about being warm and fed grow so ideological concerns shrink. Maslow knew what he was talking about.

I haven't read the Guardian in years, I stopped before Brexit. Too many opinions, not enough news for my liking. So definitely not in a Guardian bubble.🙂

Twelve years of Conservative recklessness, corruption, lies, sleaze and incompetence has brought us to a point where the UK has more food banks than McDonalds.😲 Women's rights are fucked as are our health service, transport services, Police and criminal justice system, infrastructure and Education system. Inequalities have widened. The Tories have completely fucked the UK.

So I am loving watching the shambolic, chaotic Tory party destroy itself.😂😂😂

You seem to be confusing conservative voters in the red wall with poor people. They generally aren’t.

The sort of people who’ve got themselves into the situation that they need someone to help them to afford food and heating are the sort who will vote Labour.

We have a home in the red wall, my husband has a vote there, his extended family all live there. Those who switched their vote tend to have a nice new car on the drive, a good job, and savings in the bank.

But sweetie it isn't. And when, hopefully, the new PM actually starts to reject Liberal fusspot theories, they will.be strong. If your Labour were so great there would have been a general election. And millions of Iraqis and Afghani people would still be alive if Labour were so credible and non corrupt.

That's due to our wank outdated electoral system forcing people with opposing views to be in one of three parties (in England). We badly need PR.

Do you have some evidence for that? Or that they’ll be magically protected from the rising cost of living? These look like natural Tory voters to me and the economic carnage has barely started yet.

Well yes, as I said, we have a home and family there, many friends, and so we speak to people.

The North East is not uniformly full of poor people, far from it. The restaurants are full, the place is booming, people have money in their pockets and are enjoying spending it.

Do you perhaps not live there yourself, and imagine that we still keep our coal in the bath?

These people have rightly rejected Labour. They see a party that’s racist to the core, that hates people like them, and that won’t stand up to protect women.

Here’s an idea, get up off your arse, get yourself up to Newcastle, Morpeth, Hexham or Yarm, have a look at the people, their clothes, their houses and cars. Educate yourself. Try to understand why the UK has rejected Labour and continues to do so, and why, when faced with a socialist candidate people gave the Conservatives an eighty seat majority.

Blossomtoes · 19/07/2022 11:12

I have relatives in Hartlepool @MsFrenchie. I see exactly what it’s like every time I visit them. Nothing’s booming there apart from crime.

When I said evidence, I meant real evidence, not anecdote.

Jossfromtenko · 19/07/2022 14:50

I have invested in Hartlepool. I had to choose from a list of 18 potential tenants. I chose the guy with a dog because landlords are such assholes. I don't agree it's not booming, it has problems but it's a close community and the industries such as ICI and Steel are creating social mobility, no doubt about it. Regarding infrastructure, I see local authorities cleaning up areas and offering opportunity. Not very socialist but good for the people whonwant to work and be whoever they want to be.

FinallyHere · 19/07/2022 15:00

about the impending worsening of cost of living over the next few months

I agree it's not ideal, but it has to be better than a proven liar with a hefty majority continuing to cause chaos until the next GE

In recent similar situations they whittled the candidates down to 2 then one stood aside. It's not impossible that might happen this time round, in return for the chancellorship and a decent chance at the leadership next time round.

pigsDOfly · 19/07/2022 15:04

Goodness, I seem to be the only one who actually enjoyed watching the debates.

I'm not a conservative voter but whoever wins is the person we will have at the head of the conservative party when we have the next general election, well, unless they have another leadership contest before that.

It's good to see them setting out their stall and see them in action. I've found it quite illuminating.
