Strange goings on tonight. Can anyone shed light?

I have two cats and two dogs. My dogs sleep in my bed with me and usually the cat is downstairs/outside and comes in to say good morning in the morning.

However, climbed into bed about 30 minutes ago. Followed my usual routine. Topped up cats food and water for overnight, locked up, brushed teeth etc.

Im not long in from the cinema and it's just the one cat that's in the house since I've came home but this isn't unusual.

Got into bed with the dogs and my cat who is never very vocal was meowing so loudly outside my bedroom door. I let him in but he wouldn't come up in the bed and just kept meowing standing at the open bedroom door. So I then go over to him and he starts to walk away still meowing, he basically takes me outside to a bush at the back of my garden. I use my phone torch to look in it/under it but can't see anything. He just stood there meowing at it.

I've now came inside and he has stayed outside in the garden (there's a cat flap so can get in at any time). I went back to bed and now my dogs are acting all strange and not settling at all which is unlike them. They are in a good routine.

I'm a little worried that something has happened to my other cat and my cat is meowing and trying to tell me.

Has anyone else experienced something like this? Should I be worried?

My cat gets very vocal when he’s killed something, drags in some poor mouse or rabbit and tells me all about it. Could your cat just be telling you about something he killed and put in the bush?

ThinWomansBrain · 12/07/2022 00:15

saw a mouse in the bush but failed to catch it?
threw up in the bush, and is telling you he wasnt well?

spotcheck · 12/07/2022 00:15

Go look again?

Go look again?

Honestly I'm too creeped out to go back out. It's so dark out there now.

Maybe a hedgehog out there, mine is going bonkers at the moment as we have one that's come to live with us.

HollowTalk · 12/07/2022 00:23

Is it an air pressure thing?

Isausernameavailable · 12/07/2022 00:25

Thinks dogs in bed is gross and is remonstrating?

Haha perhaps. They're too cute to kick out though. Thanks everyone, I will properly investigate in the morning

Hedgehog, fox or a dead thing probably.

one of ours is extremely vocal when looking for his sister - proper plaintive yowals. If you felt brave another look with a a good torch could be helpful just to put your kind at ease for other cat

BirdWatch · 12/07/2022 00:38

My cat did that a few days before having kittens. She showed us the box she had chosen to give birth. Usually she slept on my bed.

SirenSays · 12/07/2022 00:47

The last time my cat did this it was to show me a litter of kittens she'd found!

Oceanus · 12/07/2022 00:49

Kittens...?

EmmaH2022 · 12/07/2022 00:53

I'd definitely look again now.
do you have a catflap?

TwentyOneTwentyTwo · 12/07/2022 00:54

My cat meows like this when the bug he wants to eat is out of reach. "Muuuuuuummmm, make the moth fly down here! 's'not fair! Muuuummm!"

I hope that's all it is for you too and that your other cat is okay.

dippingdots12 · 12/07/2022 00:57

I think kittens too

Yeah this is the only time I've known cats to do this

FlappyCats · 12/07/2022 01:01

One semi-feral cat I used to care for once did the exact same thing in the garden and led me to a quaking puppy in a bush! The poor pup was lost and being held hostage by the cat until I got home.

FrozZen · 12/07/2022 01:10

"Honestly I'm too creeped out to go back out. It's so dark out there now."

Is this in your own garden? Do you have a torch? Go and look! What on earth is there to be creeped out by?! Your own cat wants you show you something... Go look!

Being scared of night time is a surmountable fear. It is almost a full moon and a gorgeous night in midsummer.

FrozZen · 12/07/2022 01:21

If you are scared of being in your own garden, you need to ponder why and how to overcome that. It doesn't make sense to not feel safe in your own home and garden. You simply have to ask yourself why you are so scared, and of what, is it even rational, and face it.

I live in a deeply rural area, alone. The first year or so I was alone, I'd lock and bolt the doors, panic at every slight noise. In this heat, I am sleeping outside and/or with the doors and windows wide open!

IMVHO, irrational fear can ruin your enjoyment of a very short life if you aren't careful. Your cat isn't scared... Why should you be?!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 12/07/2022 01:24

No answers or advice but I'm place marking.

Oceanus · 12/07/2022 01:28

The OP better not be sleeping before going into that garden first! 😠

SubParbanMum · 12/07/2022 01:53

My cat did this when it’s brother was being attacked outside by neighbours cat. Led us to the doors by meowing and walking

anderosonnmj · 12/07/2022 02:18

Is there a fox nearby? My cats get really excited when they see one. Maybe there's a den at the end of your garden?

Mothership4two · 12/07/2022 02:26

@skinnylov Take the dogs out and see what they pick up/lead you to?

My old cat did this to me in the early hours (as well as jumping up and down on my chest) and then lead me to my Dad in a heap at the bottom of the stairs. My Dad was staying and had got up during the night to get a drink and was tripped up by my other cat and fell wrenching his back and badly cutting his hand. He was in a lot of pain. Realise you won't have a person in the bush, but it sounds important to the cat!

Personally I couldn't rest until I had found out what he was trying to tell me, especially if another cat was missing. But I am not at all bothered going out into my garden at night.

wonderstuff · 12/07/2022 10:07

Have you looked this morning OP?
