Strange goings on tonight. Can anyone shed light?

I have two cats and two dogs. My dogs sleep in my bed with me and usually the cat is downstairs/outside and comes in to say good morning in the morning.

However, climbed into bed about 30 minutes ago. Followed my usual routine. Topped up cats food and water for overnight, locked up, brushed teeth etc.

Im not long in from the cinema and it's just the one cat that's in the house since I've came home but this isn't unusual.

Got into bed with the dogs and my cat who is never very vocal was meowing so loudly outside my bedroom door. I let him in but he wouldn't come up in the bed and just kept meowing standing at the open bedroom door. So I then go over to him and he starts to walk away still meowing, he basically takes me outside to a bush at the back of my garden. I use my phone torch to look in it/under it but can't see anything. He just stood there meowing at it.

I've now came inside and he has stayed outside in the garden (there's a cat flap so can get in at any time). I went back to bed and now my dogs are acting all strange and not settling at all which is unlike them. They are in a good routine.

I'm a little worried that something has happened to my other cat and my cat is meowing and trying to tell me.

Has anyone else experienced something like this? Should I be worried?

Hope your other cat is ok

skinnylov · 12/07/2022 10:15

No sign of other cat and absolutely nothing in or under the bush. Cat seems more settled this morning. Not worried about other cat yet as it is usual he goes out for a good while.

Hmmm! The plot thickens and the mystery remains. Get a torch ready just in case... for tonight 🤔😸

ConfusedBubble · 12/07/2022 11:05

Ooo shamelessly commenting for updates!

Oceanus · 12/07/2022 12:18

Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute! I think I'm on to something...🤔Do your neighbours have scaffolding up? Could that be the case? If it's so, here's your answer! www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4587684-the-fing-scaffolding-is-back?reply=118483379
You're welcome!!! 😂

My cat was also being v strange last night - woke DCs up meowing at 3am, I then had to get up and evict him from DC2’s room. All v out of the ordinary. I second the air pressure theory.

I seem to recall that Skippy the Kangaroo did something similar and led Sonny to someone who had fallen down a well.

Do you have a well in your garden?

Cheeseandlobster · 12/07/2022 12:53

I remember a thread like this where foxes were suspected. Until the op came back and said foxes don't ask for a finger in their arse. Dodgy Bush shenanigans 🤪

I have two house cats and they get like this when there are foxes around, we live semi rurally and get lots of foxes in the garden. I think they can smell them even though they are inside and the foxes are outside

If you are scared of being in your own garden, you need to ponder why and how to overcome that. It doesn't make sense to not feel safe in your own home and garden. You simply have to ask yourself why you are so scared, and of what, is it even rational, and face it.

I live in a deeply rural area, alone. The first year or so I was alone, I'd lock and bolt the doors, panic at every slight noise. In this heat, I am sleeping outside and/or with the doors and windows wide open!

IMVHO, irrational fear can ruin your enjoyment of a very short life if you aren't careful. Your cat isn't scared... Why should you be?!

What?😂 it's not that serious, many people would prefer not to go out and investigate bushes in pitch black, in the garden or not!

MissMaple82 · 12/07/2022 13:13

I need to know wether the other cat is OK or not??

Staffy1 · 12/07/2022 14:04

Cats are weird, there doesn’t have to be an explanation for weird behaviour. The dogs are unsettled because it’s freaked them out by acting strangely.

Laiste · 12/07/2022 14:20

Fascinating!

Cats can be clever.
I keep ragdoll cats. Some do venture out as we back onto open countryside. Some aren't bothered. One year on bonfire night i realised one cat which did go out was still out and i wanted him back in asap. He was normally in like a rocket when you called him but this time I called and called and nothing.

The bangs and whistles of fireworks began and i was out there yelling and tapping his food dish ect. Nothing.

I went back in the house all worried and noticed his sister (a much more intelligent cat all round and one who didn't go out much at all) was miowing by the back door. I thought ''she wants to help her brother'' - and i let her out! She shot straight down our garden like a fluggy white bullet and through the big hedge to the fields. About 10 seconds later she shot straight back through the hedge and back into the house .... with her brother right behind her 😀
Clever girl 😻

Laiste · 12/07/2022 14:22

fluggy 😅 fluffy!

Flubber88 · 12/07/2022 14:25

Same our two cats get vocal if they have brought something in, one brought in a rat last week - only found the it the next morning spent night wondering what the have done!

Charlize43 · 12/07/2022 15:16

Your cat sounds very frustrated that you don't speak cattish and is trying to tell you that you could both sleep in the nice bush tonight and that you don't have to spend all of your time with the dogs!

Your other cat may have found a time share arrangement with someone that has a nice dog free bed.
