I just want some peace in the garden!

It's a glorious day and I just want to sit in my garden and relax, we have a corner plot and there's about 5 houses that back onto ours, one house has the radio on really loud and next door recently got a trampoline they have 6 kids and there is always someone on it and it squeaks like mad,
I know I might be a bit unreasonable and everyone has a right to enjoy their gardens but I just wish people would enjoy them a bit more quietly

It sounds as if it’s got pretty powerful noise cancelling qualities. I’d love a pair myself: which make / type do you have?

I use various ones, but I'm using these at the moment which were inexpensive and I'm very happy with. £25 Amazon
Active Noise Cancelling Wireless Earbuds OREIMAC Bluetooth 5.2 Wireless Earphones Sports Bluetooth Earbuds IPX7 Waterproof ANC in Ear Headphones with Microphone.

Seriously, wearing them in the garden can transform your life!

The worse for me was a neighbour who spent all day screaming profanities at her poor small children. I used to wonder why she'd even had them.

I stream music from my phone and it's so lovely to be out there. I love playing Brazilian Samba, or cocktail music or if I'm reading I'll opt for some relaxing classical.

I live back to back with lots lots of neighbours. Kids, dogs, more kids, more dogs. Gates slamming, bins banging. . I'm quite quiet. Until last night. Sunny day, back garden, a Prosecco and next thing I know I'm out on the decking singing Life is a Cabaret. I'm not even sorry.

This made me snort! Well done OP give 'em the jazz hands!

Basketball hoops and a boy continually bouncing a basket ball is mental torture. Our last neighbours had a son who did this- he spent hours by himself every day- before school, after school, weekends, doing it and it was terrible.

I'm not saying don't enjoy your garden but try to have some consideration for other around you, o don't want complete silence but I also don't want to hear music blasting, I can still hear the music and the trampoline in the house with the doors closed.
Me and oh have 5 kids between us but I wouldn't let them be a nuisance to neighbours in the garden.

It’s so annoying but it’s the nature of back gardens being so close together unfortunately. Noise cancelling headphones for you, and encourage your children to have fun even if it means making noise. It might actually help, people will realise how noisy they are being and might quiet them down a bit.

Charlize43 thanks for the link 😊

I'm pretty sure all my neighbour's did a bulk buy of jet washers. Gnnnnrrrr. Silence. Gnnnnrrr. Silence. Gnnnnrrrr. Silence. Repeat, all fucking summer. How clean do you need your patio to be, ffs?

My neighbour has been using what sounds like an industrial sander yesterday and today. He has been doing this on weekends and evenings for a year and it is unbearable. He has headphones on so he is aware of the noise being made but clearly couldn't care less about the impact on everyone else. We had to sit on with the windows and doors shut and could still hear him.

But if he's sanding his floors before varnishing, what to you expect of him?

I have bought four neglected home now. It's better to restore them than wait for them to fall down. And restoration makes noise. As long as he works on it between 8-6, he's being fair..

Thank you Charliz,, at that price it’s worth giving them a go

I rent a small house that's basically a maisonette bolted on the side of a bigger house, all owned by the same landlord. Our gardens are separated by a four foot high wall with a gate in the middle. They've got an above-ground swimming pool, one of those 14 foot across ones, right up next to the wall. The kids were standing on the wall to jump in it yesterday. Much fun I'm sure - most of the splashing was coming over my side. When they empty the pool it floods my garden as well for a bonus. They're also known to put a speaker on the wall to play music - my backdoor and kitchen window are a couple of feet away. If they're out there, unless I want to basically be part of their conversations, I need to keep my door and windows shut.

On numerous previous occasions they've burnt random old furniture in an oil drum, there are regular drunken arguments, a lot of screaming and swearing at the kids - I just try to keep to myself and ignore it as much as possible. But it's so nice when they go out.

Feeling your pain, we are in the same situation with neighbours who have vaguely been talking about an extension for a year and have chosen the first day of the summer holiday to start digging it with 5 days notice (I’m a teacher and this is my first proper break in a year, 3 months mat leave doesn’t count!) It will take the whole summer, so drilling, banging, sawing, Heart FM on loudly etc.

They have also adopted two very large and growly stray dogs that they let roam around the garden so now we don’t feel safe leaving the baby out there in case they jump the fence.
When they pass me in the street, my mouth smiles but my eyes say ‘I hate you with all my heart’
Not keen on our neighbours with the trampoline/shrieking kids but that, at least is time limited. Just fuck them all.

@OnlyTheBravest thank you for the info!

Hellsbe · 16/07/2022 08:12

Should have booked yourself a nice few days abroad OP😀

vivainsomnia · 16/07/2022 08:20

It shouldn't be difficult. Children playing, talking, laughing at normal noise level, the occasion tantrum with parents taking kids in when they do, totally acceptable. Kids screaming rather than talking, screeching rather than laughing, using equipment that makes screeching or bouncing sounds regularly for hours, not ok.

Adults having friends, normal pitch conversation, occasional louder laughter, all OK. Adults who laugh loudly every few se ones, shout, play loud games, etc... every weekends for hours, not ok.

DIY noise, ok at reasonable hours and not e ery weekend, ok. At 7am or after 9pm, every day or every weekend for hours, not ok.

OP I am totally with you. I love my house and my garden but it feels like something we have to endure all summer rather than enjoy! There is just constant dog barking as people seem to leave their dogs stuck in the garden unsupervised all day. We have dogs and they do not just bark in the garden. Then every evening this week there have been kids playing in their pool. I actually like the sound of kids playing and enjoying being outside but OMG these ones just literally scream at the top of their heads for 2 hours every evening. We tried finding a house with no neighbours behind but that's easier said than done - there aren't many! Maybe I'm just a miserable cow but why can't people just enjoy their gardens without screaming at the top of their lungs continuously, and be a bit more considerate of others.

Buy a house with a bigger garden or fewer neighbours

Oh yes, how realistic

Devastatedyetagain · 16/07/2022 08:58

I live very rurally - you would think it would be quiet but it is different noise! My neighbour to one side is in her eighties, hard of hearing with a penchant for Cliff Richard. All I can hear anywhere in the house and garden is the same CD played over and over again 🤣 the neighbour the other side has been doing building work in the garden in the evenings and a couple of doors down they are using power tools. Add to this the combines and tractors, people using the footpath behind us, calling their dogs back and the children playing on the village green it is noisy but none of it affects my enjoyment of the garden. I'm sure all they can hear is my dog barking and DD playing in the pool. The shrieking, to be fair, is normally me when I get splashed. Live and let live is my view!!!

billy1966 · 16/07/2022 09:08

The squeaking sounds awful.

Get a can of WD40 and ask the neighbours to spray in on the trampoline, it keep ours silent.

Can't help with the screaming though.

Children do need to be asked to remember others and have a bit of consideration but it is down to parents to instil that and many don't.

Courgeon · 16/07/2022 09:16

I don't mind hearing kids playing but next doors screech and scream relentlessly and their dog is relentless too. Plus the power tools from other neighbours. I'm beginning to hate it, I don't mind music so much I think it's a nice summery sound it's the screeching kids. They don't have additional needs, their parents just let them screech. Mine weren't allowed to scream and screech and if friends came round we asked them (politely) not to shout and scream. It's not necessary.

orangetriangle · 16/07/2022 13:33

And today parents are out and we have about 5 16 year olds in a hot tub the noise!!!
