I just want some peace in the garden!

It's a glorious day and I just want to sit in my garden and relax, we have a corner plot and there's about 5 houses that back onto ours, one house has the radio on really loud and next door recently got a trampoline they have 6 kids and there is always someone on it and it squeaks like mad,
I know I might be a bit unreasonable and everyone has a right to enjoy their gardens but I just wish people would enjoy them a bit more quietly

It’s the screaming isn’t it?

It’s the screaming isn’t it?

Teenaged girls are allowed to do it at concerts.

Problem is people don't set boundaries.

Noise cancelling headphones - and / or play relaxing music from your phone while you potter around.

I am never without mine. I love to spend days reading a novel on a lounger in the sunshine with a nice glass of wine, and do so often, oblivious to my neighbour's dog yapping, baby's crying, kids bouncing, teenagers blasting monotonous rap, Mr DIY sawing and sanding... They all don't exist for me now.

In goes the wireless bluetooth in-ear headphones, on goes the relaxing Sebastian Plano... If anyone needs to speak to me, they phone me as the music is streamed from the phone and will cut out immediately.

Bliss.

It sounds as if it’s got pretty powerful noise cancelling qualities. I’d love a pair myself: which make / type do you have?

BMW6 · 10/07/2022 20:47

You have my sympathy, but i can claim the booby prize ..........

One of my neighbours (don't know which) has been playing a recording of a Buddhist or Hindu song/chant. Its about 20 seconds long, then immediately starts again. Over and over and over again. From around 7am till 7pm. Every single day.

FOR THE LAST 3 WEEKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have asked various neighbours I see in the street or park outside our house, they all say not them and don't know who.

But since I last asked someone it has been turned down v noticeably, but still very audible.

freakydeaky · 10/07/2022 20:47

Charlize43 Our neighbours are pretty noisy too and I’d love some really effective noise cancelling headphones. Would you recommend yours and if so, what’s the make and model please? 😊

Talkingtopigeons · 10/07/2022 20:58

I am aware I have been spoilt by living in a terrace with mainly middle age neighbours and few kids. New neighbours - next door but one, though due to a weird layout the end of their garden joins ours.
I know they're not doing anything unreasonable but God the noise is annoying! They look after toddler grandchildren a lot and all I hear all day now is...

(name changed)
No. No.... Tommy. Tommy! Stop that. I told you! Put that down. PUT IT DOWN I told you! For goodness sake. Tommy....TOMMY. You're being naughty now. Do you want a smacked hand? Tommy I said No and I mean no.
See you've hurt yourself now. I told you....
(Child half whining/crying throughout)

I know it's hot, I know it's hard and I'm only seeing a snapshot but c'mon, toddlers don't listen to instructions, get up and intervene/distract! Its all day when the weather's nice. As its the only neighbour noise there's nothing for it to mix with to reduce the impact, I just feel like I'm sat in their living room with them. Its driving me potty!

schnubbins · 10/07/2022 21:09

My neighbour is not going to survive this summer if he continues like he has since the beginning of Covid .Since then he has been WFH which he does in the garden with his laptop and has his Concalls on loudspeaker at full volume. He is a chainsmoker , meaning he lights one cigarette off the next.We live in Germany where summer is hot and especially hot this year and I cannot have my doors open because of him .Silly twat

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 10/07/2022 21:18

If I could afford it, I’d buy an island or a lighthouse in the middle of the sea. Or a lodge house within a cemetery.

Till then, I’m stuck wearing noise cancelling headphones.

I don’t wish for silence but I could do without screaming (not playing) children, next door bellowing at eachother and the waft of some dubious smoking material wafting into my room.

That I can’t escape sadly.

Waiting patiently for torrential rain or winter. Or a euromillions win.

ComDummings · 10/07/2022 21:22

Ear defenders?

Kitten2 · 10/07/2022 21:22

I have young DC and I agree with you. There shouldn't be constant noise. My kids are asked not to scream. And they are out for a bit and then come back in not out all day, that's unfair on neighbours.

Talkingtopigeons · 10/07/2022 21:29

@schnubbins presumably if you can hear the calls, those on the other end can hear you? Time to be shouting some highly inappropriate and/or bizarre conversations... Hopefully his colleagues will eventually insist he uses headphones!

TitInATrance · 10/07/2022 21:37

Music festival-type performance in the park quarter of a mile up the hill - bass thumping for the third night, will be followed by drunks making their way home at midnight.

I am grateful for my lovely quiet neighbours and less enamoured of my local council, who have only recently started this nuisance.

andi62 · 10/07/2022 21:41

Surprised no one has mentioned bonfires, the icing on a rancid cake.

schnubbins · 10/07/2022 21:44

@Talkingtopigeons I have started doing all sorts of weird stuff like vacuuming the patio , talking loudly to my cats, kids and husband, playing Irish jigs and reels at high volume and generally being a pest but to no avail. His adult son is following in his footsteps being a gamer and starts his day around midday going on until around 3am all the while shouting and laughing his head off at whoever is on the other side .They leave their windows and doors open so we hear everything .I am really starting to despair.

Talkingtopigeons · 10/07/2022 21:47

@schnubbins I fear you're only remaining option is a sniper style water pistol, or water balloons by drone. Something for him to realise laptops should be indoors!

I love the idea of you vacuuming the patio!

OnlyTheBravest · 10/07/2022 21:53

Noise cancelling headphones have become my friend.
@freakydeaky I can recommend Sony mx 4, Boise quietcomfort 45 or Skullcandy venue. All great for home use and the venue can be found on Amazon for £70. Play some background music and enjoy your summer.

😀

easyday · 10/07/2022 22:01

I live in a terrace with small gardens. I had a couple friends over and we were sitting out with a glass of wine. Neighbours to my left had several people over happy and chatty enjoying a meal. People on the other side had someone over and they were discussing the demise of his marriage. There were a couple families with kids playing in more distant gardens.
It was great. Everyone enjoying the dry weather, everyone socialising. No one sound dominant. Just lovely urban sounds.
If you can't take people using their own space move.
Only exception would be really loud music or someone firing up the lawnmower (or similar) at dinner time.

user1471538283 · 10/07/2022 22:08

It isnt about people using their space and chatting. It's about loud, constant music and children shouting.

I can cope with children's noise but loud music really upsets me. I dont understand why some peoples noise trumps other peoples need for quiet.

I'm sure if any of you with the assumption that its live and let life or it's normal or the op should move have never lived next to noisy neighbors that played loud music in the garden with shouting over the top for 10 hours a day every single day.

HappyDays40 · 10/07/2022 22:11

I think people have forgotten what it is like to be a child on a sunny summer day. People moan when they play out them moan when they have all sorts of problems socialising with real people and spending all day gaming. What is it to be? Give me kids playing any day.

LubaLuca · 10/07/2022 22:14

We have the creaking, squeaking trampoline on one side. It's worse at the weekend when 'fun uncle' who joins in on the trampoline visits. The repetitive thumping and creaking starts before 8am, one of the kids is out there boinging in their pyjamas most mornings.

I know they're fun and an easy way to get kids to burn some energy, but I wish people realised how bloody annoying the noise is and would lubricate the springs at least (I don't know if that's safe, but I still wish they would).

UrsulaPandress · 10/07/2022 22:18

I love to hear children playing. It’s the screaming that grates.

BotterMon · 10/07/2022 22:22

Only have one neighbour so almost perfect except they have girls who shriek, worse when they have friends round, have moved their trampoline around the corner so it's now behind my garden and play music (really shit music) very loudly. They drink and the drunker they get the more their father winds the kids up and the louder they get. If I ask to turn the music down they do, but I shouldn't have to.

They are lovely people, just rather inconsiderate.

Luckily I have fields I can escape to but I should be able to sit in my garden in relative peace with normal noise levels.

myuterusistryingtokillme · 10/07/2022 22:25

Move to a house with no neighbours?

Good to see the first response is entirely predictable! I just wish they would do some kind of 'absolute twat' test before you were allowed to buy a house, and all the inconsiderate bastards had to live in the same area and listen to each other's shit music/screeching kids/chavvy hot tub screeching

It's totally possible to have a lovely time without screaming, sadly a lot of parents don't teach their offspring that and everyone hates them for it

I imagine the majority of Mumsnet respondents have children and/or are grandparents and can't forget what bringing children up is, or was, like.

Playing and laughing is not the same as screaming! In school I can assure you teachers will tolerate the former and not the latter.

I'm 100% certain my children didn't annoy the neighbours with unruly play and they were not stuck in front of screens.
I'm delighted my neighbours with children have the same expectations of their offspring.
Everybody gets to enjoy their garden and nobody, adults or children, make unnecessary noise - just normal family fun that doesn't deafen their neighbours!
