AIBU to be obsessed with strange repetitive litter in neighbour’s front garden?

Lighthearted Help me out, Mumsnet. I’ve become obsessed with the unusual repetitive litter in my neighbour’s front garden. (Name changed for this thread cos outing)
Who would be leaving a burnt out tea light and two pieces of neatly folded kitchen roll in a bush every day, and WHY?? Can you help me uncover the reason for it?
Here’s the context. I live in a naice small town outside a larger standard English town. My road leads to a main road, and one of my neighbours has a house on the corner, with its large front garden facing the main road. The garden has a big hedge, trees, lots of vegetation and is bordered by a low brick wall. In a small gap surrounded on the inside be vegetation (thus screening from the view of the house) someone is leaving the same pieces of litter every day! Every day, one or two pieces of neatly folded kitchen roll (no food stains…yes I’ve checked) appear in the same place… sometimes accompanied by a burnt out tea light. This has been going on for months!
I often pick up litter from my road/surrounding roads because, you know, right thing to do etc, and so I often pick this litter up and dispose of it. Then it keeps coming back! Every day! This week I’ve been planning to ask you lot - and it’s just the kitchen roll and no tea light. Last few weeks I’ve seen paper every day and a tea light every week or so. It’s on the walk back from the school drop off so I see it every morning.
And yes…here’s a photo!
The owner of the house is a frail old man I know to say hello to but that’s all.
So…what could it be? Give me the reasons!

I have no ideas on why, but this would also drive me crazy trying to figure it out Confused

trevthecat · 08/07/2022 13:33

I'm going with wax melts. The paper towel is cleaning out the last melt before a new one is put on and same for the used tea light

Wailywailywaily · 08/07/2022 13:36

What happens if you don’t pick it up, does it multiply?

malificent7 · 08/07/2022 13:37

I love this mystery...i rekon wax melts

Pottedpalm · 08/07/2022 13:39

Would there not be wax on the paper then?

Covidagainandagain · 08/07/2022 13:41

Its a witch, she's doing a spell and every time you throw the litter away you break the spell so she has to do it again...

(Disclaimer: I know nothing about witchcraft or spells)

GertrudeKerfuffle · 08/07/2022 13:45

You need to conduct a stakeout, OP.

Ncwinc · 08/07/2022 13:45

Someone likes wanking by candle light?

MaybeSomeDay7 · 08/07/2022 13:58

Is it definitely Saturdays and Sundays as well? How burnt out is the tea-light? If the tea light appears mostly burnt out every few days, maybe it's someone sitting on the low wall in the early hours eating their very early breakfast and disposing of the wrappers? Maybe they're waiting for a lift to work? You could work out how long they sit for by the time it takes them to get through a light. Are there any wax stains on the wall? Are they using it to heat something? Making a tea with a tea light stove?

WonderingWanda · 08/07/2022 14:09

Put a note there asking whoever is leaving why?

Ownedbymycats · 08/07/2022 14:16

Sounds innocent enough but I can see why you're intrigued. My parents were once stressed out because the adjoining hedge to the cemetery was used for some bizarre witchcraft nonsense around someone trying to pass their sins on to a

person buried that day. Now that was weird and upsetting.

Love this!
well not literally 😬

I vote for OP to do a stakeout too.....we NEED to know!

AlpacaBag · 08/07/2022 14:45

I wonder if whoever doing it is annoyed that you keep clearing it away so they replace it? And now you're in a never ending cycle of remove/replace and the person leaving the litter is probably just as intrigued as to who is clearing it away!

StarCourt · 08/07/2022 15:06

It looks like napkins being discarded from a takeaway place

That's exactly what it looks like. Chances are the foxes have made off with the discarded curry carton that was dumped with it 😁

I like the idea of wax melts…. I had originally thought it was some kind of candle shrine …. But why would someone do it in their front garden where it’s not visible from their own house?

I made the error of revisiting this thread while also on a boring work Zoom call and had to turn my camera off due to laughing out loud! I mean hmmm this is an option, but on a main road?! (Well, takes all sorts…)!!
also who folds up their ….wipes….so neatly post wank?!?😮🤔😂

Yes excellent suggestion! Perhaps I am breaking their spell…

It does. Every so often the guy who owns the house has a gardener come by so it does get cleared up by people other than me, but also (I am seriously over invested in this) it’s been going on so long there are rusted tea lights under a layer of leaf litter and rotted away paper towels…

Yes but that would actually solve the mystery when it’s more fun to guess! 😉

Some type of ritual?

Charlize43 · 08/07/2022 16:12

Clearly a ritual spell of some sort.

A witch trying to conjure up an Andrex puppy?

HAHAHa

Sweatinglikeabitch · 08/07/2022 16:20

I think the kitchen roll is someone disposing of napkins after eating takeout/packup and the tealight is "can you take this to the bin on your way out love" they shove it in their pocket then dump it when they dump the napkins.

Squidwitch · 08/07/2022 16:21

Could it be drug related? Like heating up in a spoon type drugs? I hope not, I hope it's the previous posters andrex puppy spell
