For 2 days we haven't had any heating Or hot water. 2 days! 2 days! Had the gas engineer out yesterday and he said it was an electrical problem so had the electrical engineer out today. Took him about 5 minutes! When the previous owner took the water tank out of the house and put a combi one in they left the immersion tank switch which is by the kettle in the kitchen and I went round on Monday eve and turned all the switches off.. this switch turned the boiler off completely

It cost £120 to flick a switch that I turned off!!

BRB going for a hot shower 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

DillonPanthersFNL · 07/07/2022 15:31

I can't believe it. He looked at me with so much pity 😂

I did something very similar when we moved to our old house, nearly replaced the 'broken' hob (that we'd been lighting with a lighter) because the ignition stopped working randomly. Didn't realise it had a randomly switch in a bank of 6 (that we had no idea what the others did either) as well as an isolator

Harridance · 07/07/2022 15:45

Have you had the heating on? It's so warm

Riverlee · 07/07/2022 15:45

Brill!

Lacedwithgrace · 07/07/2022 15:52

We had a new bathroom fitted and found no hot water in the basin tap. 3 plumbers came to look at it and the last pointed out that we were just twisting the tap to the cold side, not the hot. 🤦‍♀️

Unless OP is your next door neighbour how do you know how warm their home is?

RavenousBugblatter · 07/07/2022 15:56

I don't understand the obsession on MN with people having their heating on or off - doesn't everyone just have their heating on a thermostat, so it comes on rarely in summer and lots in winter?

lostintheglowofmotherhood · 07/07/2022 15:58

We did this! I was annoyed the coffee machine wasn't as far back as it could be, plumber comes out, switch was flicked by me moving coffee machine as far back as it would go.

I have a few bonus ones.

When I was pregnant with my firstborn, I was waiting in December for the bus, then I saw snow! Stuck my tongue out to catch it... wasn't snow. It was painted wood that was being sawed. Didn't see the man up a ladder until after. Had an allergic reaction.

When I met my now DH, he took my knickers off the line, and mocrowaved them so they were dry...they were cool from being on the line. He melted the elastic in them.

We have move but can't remember off the top of my head!

Buythebag40 · 07/07/2022 16:03

I did this on holiday. We arrived late after hours of travelling to the holiday home to find no heating/hot water and I couldn't for the life of me work out why. So no showers that night or the next morning.

Next day I went to reception and complained and was probably a bit arsey to be honest and the receptionist said she'd send someone round later that day and gave us free drinks vouchers for the bar.

He arrived the next day, took one look and said "you need to switch it on here" and pointed to a switch in the under stairs cupboard that said "heating/hot water". I felt like a right idiot, however I still maintain there was nothing mentioned about it in the welcome pack!

We'd already used the free drinks vouchers 😆

My fridge freezer stopped working so I bought a new one. I plugged it in and it didn't work either. Then I noticed the switch on the wall had been accidently turned off by resting the chopping board against it, and now they both worked .

Harridance · 07/07/2022 16:13

Lacedwithgrace, just curios is all, given that it's July

Lalosalamanca · 07/07/2022 16:14

LOLS

CeratopsofthePharoahs · 07/07/2022 16:15

Thought the light in my fridge had gone. Started looking online for a new one. Then noticed it wasn't making any noise at all.... thought the wretched thing had died.

It was only when I watched my son put away the folding kitchen step which lives next to it that I realised I had shoved it much further back as I kept stubbing my toe and this had hit the plug socket that the fridge was plugged into and switched it off. I had got perilously close to buying a new one online.

DH was having a bad day and then got very cross when his cordless mouse stopped working. It had brand new batteries in it so why the hell wasn't it working!!!! Aaagh.
He'd put them in backwards.

spiderlight · 07/07/2022 16:30

I did similar. We got a new combi boiler. There was a light-up switch high on our kitchen wall that was for the immersion heater in the old boiler, which we had never used. About a week after the new boiler went in, I thought 'Oh, we don't need that any more - I wonder why it's on' and switched it off. No hot water, no heating. Luckily I twigged what I'd done before calling the boiler-fitters back out!

AchatAVendre · 07/07/2022 16:31

When I rented out my flat, my tenant phoned me up to say the central heating wasn't working. I went through everything with him, including to check whether it was switched on at the wall. He insisted everything was in order, he had checked the manual, tried everything, blah blah.

So I had no choice but to drive the 80 mile round trip to meet with a heating engineer (he couldn't make the appointment). As soon as I got there, I realised that the tenant had pushed the microwave against the on-off switch for the central heating boiler on the wall...

JunieBabes · 07/07/2022 16:37

My husband is an electrician and got called to a house once as they'd bought a new ceiling light and couldn't get it to work, so didn't know if they'd wired it in properly. It had no fucking bulb in it!

EllieRosesMammy · 07/07/2022 16:37

Oh jesus 🤦‍♀️😂

I bought a brand new washing machine last year, first time ever as I've always been too skint to buy brand new and gone second hand, didn't realise they put bolts in the back when they deliver it that you have to remove. Spent days wondering why the washing machine was making a god awful sound😂

LadyEloise1 · 07/07/2022 16:41

@DillonPanthersFNL
I can't believe you have the heat on in July.

I once had the burglar alarm man out as there was a beeping sound we couldn't turn off.
It was a smoke alarm - the battery was low.
🙈

BackToTheTop · 07/07/2022 16:51

Motorbikes have a bright red switch on the handle bars, that when turned off means the bike won't start.

I called the AA out because my bike suddenly stopped working. I must had hit the kill switch by accident

Squiff70 · 07/07/2022 16:53

Somewhere on MN is a thread entitled 'How broken are you?'. Hundreds of people sharing stories just like yours OP. Such utterly hilarious and quite a few facepalm moments. Well worth a read. You'll feel like you've found your people (like I did).

HairyScaryMonster · 07/07/2022 17:15

Different but equally idiotic. I've made 2 extra school runs today, once because I forgot forest school clothes and second because I misread the time and tried to collect DD an hour early! 🙄🙈

DillonPanthersFNL · 07/07/2022 17:49

@Harridance yes for a small time because I'm having chemo.

OP posts:
DillonPanthersFNL · 07/07/2022 17:51

Ok I had the heating on for 1 hours when I was freezing after my chemo. Also we've no hot water. Do you just shower cold then? @LadyEloise1

Lol.

I had a new bathroom fitted just before Christmas. The basin has a new-fangled tap with a single lever that you twist, and I still haven't got used to the fact that left = hot and right = cold.
