We started a tradition of "Classic Movie Night" once a month during lockdown in our house and it's my turn tonight but I'm stumped? We like movies from all genres including movies dating from the 1930's to 2000's. We're all adults so no need to be kid-friendly. I'm grateful for any suggestions!

There was a thread about just this a few months ago, it ran for pages. Will see if I can find it.

“Classic” is hard to define, for me it means “everyone should see this film”, not necessarily “this film will change your life/is groundbreaking”

Dr Strangelove
Some Like It Hot
Blazing Saddles
Young Frankenstein
Weekend At Bernie’s

ghostyslovesheets · 02/07/2022 17:31

Postman Always Rings Twice
Gilda
Casablanca

ghostyslovesheets · 02/07/2022 17:31

Dangerous Liaisons

Allthegoodnamesaregoneffs · 02/07/2022 17:32

Psycho
Strangers on a train
North by northwest
Vertigo
Rear window

Can you tell I'm a Hitchcock fan?!?

CaveMum · 02/07/2022 17:34

Pretty much anything with Peter Sellers in it - The Mouse That Roared is highly underrated.

Rainbunny · 02/07/2022 17:35

Thanks everyone! Lot's of great suggestions and especially thanks to 007DoubleOSeven for posting the older thread. I think we're going to watch "Twelve Angry Men" but I also want to see "It happened one night."

I'm also a massive Hitchcock fan so we've seen all of his movies several times but I was reminded about Alistair Sims movies like "School for Scoundrels" and the original St Trinians movies - so great!

TragicMuse · 02/07/2022 17:50

Do you count films in other languages?

Tampopo is absolutely a film everyone should see! It's wonderful.

Classic English sci-fi such as The Day The Earth Caught Fire and Quatermass.

WW2 'propaganda' such as In Which We Serve and The Way To The Stars.

Espionage - any of the early adaptations of John Le Carre's The Spy Who Came In From The Cold, the original Ipcress File and Funeral In Berlin.

I'd watch any of those right now! And actually, I might!
