In thinking that Red Dwarf is still creasingly funny?

For some reason, I started re-watching Red Dwarf last night (it's available on Now). It's still SO funny.

There was a scene between Lister and Rimmer in 'Marooned' as they were discussing losing their virginity which honestly approaches comic genius. Every time I thought the punchline was there, another one followed.

For context, Lister had said he lost his virginity 'in the ninth hole of the Bootle municipal golf course'

Lister (wistfully): She just took all her clothes off and stood in front of me, completely naked. I was so excited, I almost dropped me skateboard.
Rimmer: SKATEBOARD? How old were you?
Lister: Twelve
Rimmer: TWELVE? You lost your virginity when you were twelve?
Lister: Yeah
Rimmer: Twelve?
Lister: Yeah
Rimmer (aghast): Twelve? You were twelve?
Lister: Yeah
Silence...
Rimmer: You can't have been a full member of the golf course then.

And later
Lister: Are you saying I've got a big bum?
Rimmer: Big? It's like two badly parked Volkswagons 😁

Anyone else a fan?

'Uh-oh, better make myself look big!' Cat. Still very funny indeed 🙂

Hugasauras · 02/07/2022 09:28

YANBU. It's a masterpiece

Autienotnaughtie · 02/07/2022 09:29

Very funny, the later series aren't as slick though. Did not like the cat on strictly he ruined himself for me.

CataTonic58 · 02/07/2022 09:30

YANBU and can I say thanks for reminding me how funny that was.

ermagerdabear · 02/07/2022 09:32

YANBU although the series after Chris Barrie left and then came back didn't quite hit the mark mainly because one of the writing duo left.

There are a couple of novels based on the show and they're also hilarious.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 02/07/2022 09:38

It's wonderful. There are a few bits where I grimace now, but that's the same with everything that's a bit dated I think.

I often shout 'too slow chicken marengo!' much to the bemusement of my DP and DDGrin

Agree the later ones were not so good though.

I love Red Dwarf but agree with ermagerdabear about Chris Barrie's departure and the writers changes.
I think the inventive Sci-Fi ideas, coupled with hilarious lines, make it stand out. Still.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 02/07/2022 09:42

Ok, this has got to be the biggest YANBU I've ever given 😁

BobbinThreadbare123 · 02/07/2022 09:43

I always speak softly and carry a bloody big bazookoid

romdowa · 02/07/2022 09:44

It's mine and dps favourite show. The song they sing while in prison "you are the sunshine of my life" that is going to be the song for our first dance at our wedding 🤣

Wazzzzzuuuuuuup · 02/07/2022 09:46

Honestly, this show has ripples in my every day life and there isn't a single day when I don't make at least one dwarf quote. The first 6 seasons were wonderful.

And actually, I'm going to watch them all again because it is just so good

Needhelp101 · 02/07/2022 09:52

I think it went downhill in about series 6 tbf. But the earlier series... I was belly laughing for most of it 😂

In 'Queeg'
Holly: We are talking jape of the decade.
We are talking April, May, June, July and August fool

The whole of Lister's 'AI shoes' story

The entire episode of 'Polymorph'
Cat: this isn't a meal, it's an autopsy!

Lister: I say we strap a nuclear warhead to my forehead and I'll nut the smegger to oblivion!

I'm off to watch some more!

It's an absolute classic, love it.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/07/2022 09:58

YANBU, of course.

WitchDancer · 02/07/2022 10:02

Wayne Dibley.

IllDoItButOnlyForTheAttention · 02/07/2022 10:03

Absolutely love seasons 1-5. And yes, they still hold up so well. DS and I watched them all in lockdown and it was so beautiful watching him creasing up laughing just like I did 30 years ago.

It does clever/silly so well.

Has anybody gorra poppadom the size of Lake Michigan?

Shivermetimbers0112 · 02/07/2022 10:17

“It’s a banana. It always has been a banana, it always will be a banana. It’s a banana.” Kryten 😂

Gliblet · 02/07/2022 10:21

"You can't whack death on the head!"
"If he comes near me I'm gonna rip his nipples off!"

"Mr. Flibble's very cross. You shouldn't have run away from him. What we going to do with them, Mr. Flibble?"
...
😯
"We couldn't possibly do that. Who'd clean up the mess?"
🐧

Needmorelego · 02/07/2022 10:22

I was in the studio audience for filming of 2 episodes. We had a warm up guy to - well warm us up into laughing. It was comedian Tony Hawks who also did the voice of the Talkie Toaster...
"Would you like a crumpet?"

dinosaurcookie · 02/07/2022 10:23

I have the DVD boxset somewhere!
I always wanted a pet skutter when I was a kid!

Glittertwins · 02/07/2022 10:25

Mr Flibble is very cross!!

Roominmyhouse · 02/07/2022 10:27

It’s one of my all time favourite tv shows! I’ll always love it.

MermaidEyes · 02/07/2022 10:27

I love Red Dwarf! Can still laugh at the same episodes over and over. I met Cat once, he was genuinely lovely.

IncompleteSenten · 02/07/2022 10:36

I love it.
It got a bit crap in the later seasons (I never came to terms with the different Kochanski 😁) but it is still one of my favourite shows.

The Cat has some amazing lines.
Eg
I'd prefer chicken.

If you wanted the stick so badly, why'd you throw it away in the first place.
