In thinking that Red Dwarf is still creasingly funny?

For some reason, I started re-watching Red Dwarf last night (it's available on Now). It's still SO funny.

There was a scene between Lister and Rimmer in 'Marooned' as they were discussing losing their virginity which honestly approaches comic genius. Every time I thought the punchline was there, another one followed.

For context, Lister had said he lost his virginity 'in the ninth hole of the Bootle municipal golf course'

Lister (wistfully): She just took all her clothes off and stood in front of me, completely naked. I was so excited, I almost dropped me skateboard.
Rimmer: SKATEBOARD? How old were you?
Lister: Twelve
Rimmer: TWELVE? You lost your virginity when you were twelve?
Lister: Yeah
Rimmer: Twelve?
Lister: Yeah
Rimmer (aghast): Twelve? You were twelve?
Lister: Yeah
Silence...
Rimmer: You can't have been a full member of the golf course then.

And later
Lister: Are you saying I've got a big bum?
Rimmer: Big? It's like two badly parked Volkswagons 😁

Anyone else a fan?

Bloody love Red Dwarf. I once stood behind Talky Toaster in a car park queue!

Bah I think I must be dead inside because every time I have tried to rewatch it it doesn't even raise a smile Confused. I used to love it when it was on originally.

I feel like this about series 8 and 9. Just weren't funny.

It did go downhill when one writer left. I think he had a really good imagination and storytelling and the lines were better because of that.

I do wonder how the story will end.

DeusInAbsentia · 03/07/2022 14:20

Best show ever seen on TV. Watched from the first season as a teenager, it was my Dad bonding time as we'd always sit and watch together.

Lesser known footage of young Cat btw...he was a dancer with Wham.

Love the time travel one when they travel back to the 14th century or something and all rush to look out of the window.

It's exactly the same as it was. Obvs.

''...... fun though it was drinking in the heady medieval atmosphere of Pre-Renaissance deep space, the drive is next to useless, yes?''

😂

LeggyLinda · 03/07/2022 15:51

I loved red dwarf back in the day. I still love it now.
its one of those few series that got better throughout the seasons.
I know it got a bit of stick in the season where Chris barrie left, but I still liked it.

Read a couple of the books too - great!

I wish they made more TV like this - I’d maybe switch it on from time to time😜

Anyone see the American version? It was remarkably bad. Which just goes to show how how important it is to get the right actors with the right script to perform the right jokes

ErrolTheDragon · 03/07/2022 16:02

I didn't know there was an attempt at an American version... I can't begin to imagine that, Red Dwarf is decidedly British humour which surely wouldn't translate.

Glittertwins · 03/07/2022 16:32

I can't imagine a US version ever working!

AllHailKingLouis · 03/07/2022 16:36

Remember the American attempt at The Inbetweeners? Painfully embarrassing - couldn’t get through one episode.

The Office (US) is terrible too. The Americans need to step away from British comedy, they just don’t understand it

Autienotnaughtie · 03/07/2022 18:14

When rimmer had the hex and he had that sick puppet 😂😂😂

FailingMotherhood · 03/07/2022 18:44

Seasons 1 - 6 were glorious. Me and my mates regularly end up quoting bits in everyday conversation, and I still have a tendency to refer to London as Nodnol.

MrsMattMurdock · 03/07/2022 18:44

Bloody amazing. I saw a bloke with a t-shirt on yesterday at a country show that said "Give quiche a chance" and I wanted to go up to him and ask him if he was a member of the Committee for the Liberation of Terrifying Lifeforms and their Rehabilitation Into Society. But I chickened out. An opportunity wasted 😭

MrsMattMurdock · 03/07/2022 18:48

*Organisms obviously. In my defence it's a bit of a mouthful.

KeyboardCat · 04/07/2022 15:23

Looove RD! Whenever my children or DP ask me what something is (however obvious it may be) I say 'It's a chicken' 😁

'Is that a CIGARETTE Lister??'
'No, it's a chicken...!'

Waitwhat23 · 04/07/2022 18:48

Because of this thread, I have now started a rewatch of the series. Dug out my anniversary (can't remember what anniversary it was!) edition. Currently on Future Echoes. Proper genius.

(Can't find a decent gif of that episode but found this, which is hilarious)

That's from Polymorph, isn't it? That must be one of my favourite episodes 😁

Remembering more classic lines...

When Rimmer goes back in time to 'rescue' Lister from being one of the richest people on Earth:
"It's my duty. My duty as a complete and utter bastard."

Holly: He died in a plane crash at 91. Apparently he was making love to his fourteenth wife at the time and lost control of the plane.
Rimmer: Do you have any photographs?
Holly: Well, not of that!

I had such a crush on Rimmer when I was about 16.
"I'm going to lash you to within an inch of your life and then...I'm going to have you!"
Demons and Angels, best episode hands down.

SarahAndQuack · 04/07/2022 20:05

I am so delighted to see this thread. We've been re-watching Red Dwarf with DD and yes, it's still brilliant.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 04/07/2022 21:10

I have come to regard you all on this thread as... people I've met. 😂

I’m watching Back To Reality today after just finding out that the wonderful Lenny Dohlen has died.

”That’s traffic control.”

SpaghettiNotCourgetti · 08/07/2022 21:11

'Uh oh... better make myself look BIIIIG!' - a go-to for any difficult situation.

Also love it when the vending machine develops a lisp. 'The lithp malfunction hath been reported to the thkutterth. Thorry for the inconvenienthe.' And then it vends Lister wellies instead of a coffee and a bacon sandwich Grin

KatherineofGaunt · 08/07/2022 21:26

"I wonder why it's May Day? It's only a Bank Holiday. Ascension Sunday! Ascension Sunday!"

"Purple alert! Purple alert!"

Tongue-tied is my absolute favourite moment of all the series!

I like to watch the DVDs with the cast commentary - interesting little nuggets of info while enjoying your favourite episodes!

ChrisReasBathEggs · 08/07/2022 22:41

I've just recalled the episode where they go into the justice world with the big shoes and Rimmer forgets that he's responsible for killing a thousand people when asked to justify his existence. Or the Cat "I have brought joy to the world by having such a beautiful ass!"

Yes 😂
Rimmer: Oh, THAT
