In thinking that Red Dwarf is still creasingly funny?

For some reason, I started re-watching Red Dwarf last night (it's available on Now). It's still SO funny.

There was a scene between Lister and Rimmer in 'Marooned' as they were discussing losing their virginity which honestly approaches comic genius. Every time I thought the punchline was there, another one followed.

For context, Lister had said he lost his virginity 'in the ninth hole of the Bootle municipal golf course'

Lister (wistfully): She just took all her clothes off and stood in front of me, completely naked. I was so excited, I almost dropped me skateboard.
Rimmer: SKATEBOARD? How old were you?
Lister: Twelve
Rimmer: TWELVE? You lost your virginity when you were twelve?
Lister: Yeah
Rimmer: Twelve?
Lister: Yeah
Rimmer (aghast): Twelve? You were twelve?
Lister: Yeah
Silence...
Rimmer: You can't have been a full member of the golf course then.

And later
Lister: Are you saying I've got a big bum?
Rimmer: Big? It's like two badly parked Volkswagons 😁

Anyone else a fan?

I had no idea it was available to stream on Nowtv. Been wanting my kids to watch it. That's my viewing sorted for a few weeks 😀

Our black cat is called Dwayne Dibbley (Dibbley/Dibbles/Dibblers for short). He has goofy long fangs and walks with his front feet slightly squiffy.

airrrrAIRRRRiELLLL · 09/07/2022 20:17

The scenarios are pure genius and the writing is second to none. Only Seth Macfarland with Family Guy has come anywhere close. The books were SOOO funny. Hard to pick a favourite episode from 1-6.

swedex · 09/07/2022 20:26

I want to re watch red dwarf now! Is it available anywhere?

airrrrAIRRRRiELLLL · 09/07/2022 20:29

It's on Now. 8 series, 52 episodes. I've just started watching it. See you in a few days!

GarkandGookin · 09/07/2022 20:43

Our go to quote is ' it's only a shame he's awake', referencing Rimmer suggesting shooting someone in the back.
The first few series were wonderful. I used to video them to watch when I got home from the pub when they first came out.

Ommmmm, ommmmmm, It's called 'The Om Song'.

Isitsixoclockalready · 09/07/2022 20:52

Of course you are not being unreasonable OP. Superb series.

TheHateIsNotGood · 09/07/2022 21:13

Yep it was, and still is, great - as a Virtual Assistant myself, and being an aged crone in reality - I often laugh when I think of 'Holly'; and I'm possibly influenced by Red Dwarf in my approach to my VA work.

"You're too old, Grandad. Too old and too crypto fascist to receive what we're trying to transmit!"

Many things get sung about in the style of I'm guna eat you little fishy... Usually I'm guna eat you little cakey.

Yes, same 😁 Then when you've eaten too much, "ugh, I've been caked to death! Look out, food escape!" lol

DustyOwl · 09/07/2022 22:01

I have found my people! “I’m going to eat you little fishy” and “gotta make myself look big” pop into my head. DH and I were at school together and remember coming into school, just after a new one was aired, and comparing notes. They were on Netflix over lockdown, totally sorted us out.
We then watched the really, really new ones and we were pleasantly surprised. Some of the same magic and lots of jokes about them getting older and jumping many dimensions, fabulous.
The worst series was when they got rid of the laughter, but still left the gaps in the dialogue 🤔
Out two love it now too and we’ve had many a deep conversation about time travel and how it all fits together!

When commenting on killing someone in cold blood
Rimmer: Lister, I'd kill him if he was on the job.

And, strangely apt for these times
Lister: You're a sad weasel of a man, aren't you?

Been reading this thread since it started. Have cooked fish for tea twice this week solely so I can sing the Gonna eat you little fishy song

Stabbitystabstab · 09/07/2022 23:45

My very favourite episode is actually the one where they find kryten (played by a different actor) and he's fussing around his dead crew "Oh you haven't touched your soup!"
Was the first TV series to make me properly laugh

Antarcticant · 10/07/2022 00:00

Yay, Red Dwarf thread!

Demons & Angels is probably my favourite episode (the one with the triplicator). I can never stop laughing at the 'higher selves' - then Rimmer in the 'low ship' channeling Frank N Furter ... love it!

beccaskylar · 04/07/2022 20:04

I had such a crush on Rimmer when I was about 16.
"I'm going to lash you to within an inch of your life and then...I'm going to have you!"
Demons and Angels, best episode hands down.

Yes! I've still got a crush on him 30 years on!

I've just started watching it again from the beginning

I know EVERY WORD Shock

If only I'd turned my skills to something useful I could be president of the world or summat

Go on Mastermind with Red Dwarf as your specialist subject.

Then all of us on this thread can enjoy shouting answers at the telly.

We love Red Dwarf as well! Whoever we're discussing food if fish is an option we always state that todays fish is trout a la crème 😂

Same!!!
If the DCs ask what we're having for dinner I'll reply "fiiiiish!" To which someone will declare that today's fish is trout a la crème 😂

Antarcticant · 10/07/2022 00:35

What I love about this is the contrast between Danny John-Jules' effortless professional expertise and the valiant efforts of Chris Barrie and Craig Charles.

OP mentions Now TV and the 'Dave' channel on Freeview always has loads on catch up (the Dave channel made all the later episodes).

Personally I've got them all on DVD, but I'm old!

"It's a load of crypto fascist bourgeois crap!!"

"My name is Olaf Peterson. I am very good in bed"

The amount of incredible actors that showed up. Wasn't Kathy Burke Rimmer's mum?
