To be worried about polio?

maisieandvicks · 24/06/2022 06:14

I understand that it is out of our control, but the news about polio returning since 2003, I’m worried for my children.

They’ve had all of their shots bar my pre-schooler who is getting hers next month.

I’m still concerned for my children and furthermore, I’m equally as concerned for children nationwide.

AIBU to be concerned about the arrival of polio?

A free vaccination programme and we have shown polio can be defeated. Really no excuse for this dreadful condition returning in the UK

KangarooKenny · 24/06/2022 06:19

YABVU.

YetiTeri · 24/06/2022 06:19

It is absolutely under our control. We eradicated polio in the UK through vaccination programmes.

It's back because the west has become vaccine hoarders AND we've allowed cowboy anti-vaxxers the space to spread lies.

Whilst your vaccinated kids will be fine, this is a wake up call.

SandyWedges · 24/06/2022 06:20

I think as long as you get your kids vaccinated it should be fine? It's only because people aren't bothering that there's a worry? Or have I got that wrong.

araiwa · 24/06/2022 06:21

Blame the crystals, homeopathy, dandelion soup etc etc cunts for allowing it back

JuneJubilee · 24/06/2022 06:21

Have you actually looked into what's happening, or just read the headlines?

Ifailed · 24/06/2022 06:22

You are over-thinking this. Polio has been detected at Beckton sewage works which service half of London, it could have come from someone with Polio, or equally it could have come from some one whose been vaccinated with a live dose of polio.
So long as you and your children are up to date with their own vaccines and you follow usual hygiene guidelines you've nothing to worry about.

dementedpixie · 24/06/2022 06:24

From what I've read there havn't been polio cases detected...yet. It has been found in the sewers from a live vaccine given abroad. Make sure vaccines are up to date

newnamethanks · 24/06/2022 06:26

If your vaccines are all in place you have no need to worry. These outbreaks are partly due to the anti-vax terrorists causing confusion about all vaccines and a consequent decline in take up. Ensure young children are vaccinated and it will be OK.

Aposterhasnoname · 24/06/2022 06:26

Try actually reading the story rather than just the scaremongering headlines.

artisanbread · 24/06/2022 06:28

If you are all vaccinated there is no risk to you. It is under-vaccinated communities where there is concern.

MintJulia · 24/06/2022 06:32

Traces of polio have been found in sewage. Those traces could have come from unvaccinated individuals visiting or now living in the U.K.
Risk to children raised (and vaccinated) here is very very low.
But it shows that we cannot be complacent. We cannot assume that because we have had an effective vaccination program for 50 years, we can assume polio is gone forever.

Wow…

FabFitFifties · 24/06/2022 06:37

YANBU to be concerned that it COULD be from someone with polio. YANBU to be concerned for other children, instead of the "I'm alright Jack" prevalent on this thread. However, YABVU if this is taking up head space, and you are sitting worrying about it and becoming anxious.

No, you haven’t got that wrong and is the main subject of my concern.

But surely, if my children are vaccinated then they are safe from the unvaccinated? Am I right about this?

PinkButtercups · 24/06/2022 06:48

I thought I read you were only fully vaccinated against polio if you had all your vaccinations? So about 14? Not sure if that is right.

I did read about it being in the sewers though.

@PinkButtercups yes, this is what I thought. My oldest has had all of his vaccinations so far. It’s my youngest that hasn’t had the pre-school booster.

Not sure if it’s anxiety but it’s making me want to stop using my tap for tap water! We used to buy bottled water but then again, who knows what’s in that too?

There are no reported outbreaks.

No excuse, just the cold hard fact that anti-vaxxers are happy to potentiall kill/maim their own children and play god with the health of others

Don’t be ridiculous, it’s not in the water!

ClaudineClare · 24/06/2022 06:58

What a load of bigoted rubbish OperaStation. You need to read up on the facts of what has been detected.

That didn't take long did it? Blame the immigrants because you cannot countenance that the pernicious anti-vaxxers in this country couldn't possibly be to blame.

balalake · 24/06/2022 07:05

Valid concern about those not vaccinated and any impact of anti-vaxxers.

Are you drinking sewage water? Because that's where it was found. It's excreted in people's poo so no, not your tap water.
