Irresponsible text on homework

DD1 is in Year 1 and got a weird text for her homework.

The text is about a boy who wakes up in the middle of the night and sneaks into the kitchen to eat chocolate cake.

AIBU to think this is totally inappropriate and irresponsible?.... These kids are 5/6 years old, they don't need to be encouraged to have this kind of unhealthy and also deceitful behaviour (the boy complains the floor creaks and is going to wake up his parents).

It's a Michael Rosen poem and the mother gets upset with the boy in the morning when she finds out. However the excerpt in the homework doesn't include this last part.

It's quite a fun poem but for older children who know better..... and maybe not something to show at school....

My kids love that book. They think it’s so funny! I can assure you my kids have not started getting up at 4am to eat food 😂

m what else don’t you want your kids exposed to? I bet you have a list

ToughLover · 16/06/2022 19:24

Please tell me this is a troll

DisgruntledPelican · 16/06/2022 19:25

Ahhh, I’ve not thought about this poem for years. Thanks for the reminder to share it with my DC!

This is a joke surely - 🤦‍♀️

I read loads of books as a kid ( 40 mumble yrs ago ) about midnight snacks , lashings of ginger beer , and secret picnics.
Nothing wrong with it at all .

Just wait until they start reading Roald Dahl.

Yes my DD is 6 and they are reading the Twits. She's already put worms in my spaghetti as a result.

WyfOfBathe · 16/06/2022 19:26

If you complain about this now, you'll find a lot more to complain about when she reads Shakespeare in a few years. I think getting to read the word "ass" in class was the highlight of DD's year 6 English!

@Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas bahahhahaa I read this thinking about ds's reaction to George's marvelous medicine, he was shook 😂😂😂 that's sooooo booooold was his response every second page or so.

StoneofDestiny · 16/06/2022 19:29

Ye gawd!

I do wonder what planet some parents live on............

Peanutbuttercupisyum · 16/06/2022 19:29

what are you actually worried about? Because if its the chocolate and the sugar..?! At 5 she knows that chocolate is a treat and mummies and daddies don’t allow it often..so the boy is getting some sneakily. She must also be aware that you need to do naughty things ‘secretly’ right? At 5 my girls would sneak out into the garden after bedtime and hide in the climbing frame, or get sweets from the treats cupboard and hide them under their pillow, or ‘secretly’ bring home worms from a walk in their pocket thinking we didn’t know. Secrecy and mischievousness and a love of cake is all classic 5! I don’t know what your worried about!

redskyatnight · 16/06/2022 19:29

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a much worse text in terms of encouraging unhealthy and gluttonous behaviour. And that gets read to toddlers!

😂😂😂😂😂 This is the most P of PFB thing I have ever read! Personally I am amazed that Julia Donaldson hasn't been arrested for encouraging children to tell lies in The Gruffalo.....

What's PFB? X

Illstartexercisingtomorrow · 16/06/2022 19:29

This has brightened up my evening 😂

redskyatnight · 16/06/2022 19:30

Don't they teach the difference between fiction and non-fiction in schools any more?

Gonna be a looong 12 years.

Agree !😂

GuineaPigPosie · 16/06/2022 19:31

Oh no, I read A Squash and a Squeeze to my 4 year olds at work today... I'm already anticipating angry calls from parents about the children being encouraged to bring live farm animals into the house!

Mostess · 16/06/2022 19:31

If this worries you, don't let her see 'Matilda'.

Hutchy16 · 16/06/2022 19:31

please don’t anyone tell the OP about The Hungry Caterpillar…she might faint!

If LO does read it though, make sure you are very very very clear with them that they won’t turn into a butterfly if they eat all the food they can see.

pedropony76 · 16/06/2022 19:31

I read this and thought ‘get a grip.’

I’m happy to see that was the first comment😂

She's 5, not 10 or 15, there's a difference 🤨 she couldn't even understand what the issue was with the creaky floor

Hence the children studying the poem. A fun poem which gives them an opportunity to ‘read between the lines’ and develop inference skills…

Can I guess, are you and the little one Irish? X

Hutchy16 · 16/06/2022 19:32

And has anyone watched the Curious George tv show? Wow that monkey is naughty!

lunar1 · 16/06/2022 19:34
