Mr Kipling does NOT make exceedingly good cakes!

I remember seeing this advert circa 1978 and thinking how nice those French Fancies looked, but upon buying a box and taking a bite, it was bloody awful!

Sickly, and synthetic tasting.

Over the years I've tried a few more of his offerings and they have all been a huge disappointment and are either tasteless or synthetically over sweet tasting.

My grandparents had a grocer's shop and we spent years eating past sell by date Mr Kiplings. It feels extravagant to eat them while they still have a modicum of moisture left in them.

Comedycook · 12/06/2022 20:18

Not a fan but what did you expect? Fine French patisserie?

PotterLottery · 12/06/2022 20:20

I like the Victoria sponge slices 😋

Georgeskitchen · 12/06/2022 20:20

They are about half the size of what they used to be
I do like a bakewell tart though 😋

TheChosenTwo · 12/06/2022 20:21

He makes exceedingly crap cakes full of palm oil! Not for me 🙈

CrapBucket · 12/06/2022 20:21

I used to work for them, I was young and have happy memories of being there. Taught me a lot and I lived on apple pies for a while. They are junk food like any other sugary crap, what did you expect?!

Titsywoo · 12/06/2022 20:22

Actually I really like their pies when I can't be bothered to make my own. Heated up with custard the blackberry ones are very tasty.

emuloc · 12/06/2022 20:23

I used to really enjoy a cheery bakewell tart years ago. I purchased a pack recently, and was taken aback by how sweet they were. I was unable to even finish one. I do bake a lot, so do not usually buy ready made cakes🍰

TheWayoftheLeaf · 12/06/2022 20:23

I like the bakewells. The texture of the icing makes my head tingle

PurpleButterflyWings · 12/06/2022 20:23

I love the lemon French fancies, and the orange ones that seem to only come up for sale at Halloween for some reason. (You can only get them mid September to mid November!) I love Viennese whirls too. AND cherry bakewells!!! Grin

YABVVVU @ElenaSt I dream of a time when I can buy a French fancy the size of a microwave oven, and just shove my head in it. Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmm........ 😋

Although...... I do agree French fancies are a tiny bit synthetic tasting. Only a bit though. Could be coz it IS synthetic cream!!! 😄

BobbinHood · 12/06/2022 20:23

I haven’t had a Mr Kipling for years! I could do a Country Slice right now though, those little nibs of sugar remind me of being a child.

Saucery · 12/06/2022 20:23

I bought some apple pies the other week out of nostalgia. They were horrible! A tiny smear of unconvincing apple purée at the bottom, dry pastry….ugh!
My Mum made amazing desserts, including a delicious old fashioned apple pie, but Mr Kiplings were an occasional lunchbox treat. I ended up throwing the rest of them away this time.

BrioNotBiro · 12/06/2022 20:25

I think the battenburg is disgusting - oily, slimy marzipan and ground almonds WAY down the ingredients list.

SanFranBear · 12/06/2022 20:25

I adored their apple and custard pies but for some reason, they discontinued them (the pure apple ones are sooo sweet, the custard really helped balance it)

Lyons I think were the slab icing cakes.

I know you are right about mr Kipling but they remind me of buffets at my granny’s house and therefore always make me smile.

I thought Lyons too. They also did chocolate ones and I seem to remember at one time they came with rice paper decorations from The Magic Roundabout.

Minikievs · 12/06/2022 20:26

I don't like Mr Kipling at all!! Although I will make an exception for a festive Bakewell (not a normal one due to the cherry 🤮 but the festive little sprinkles are lovely) or a lemon Bakewell.

My top tip is to ignore Mr Kipling and go for an Aldi Viennese Whirl. 89p for 6 and they are literally the food of the gods!!!

Kitten2 · 12/06/2022 20:26

The lemon drizzles are lovely. But come in a sort of plastic tub for just 2 slices it seems quite unnecessary plastic waste so I rarely buy them now.

Don't like any of the others, too sugary.

DC like the apple pies.

PurpleButterflyWings · 12/06/2022 20:27

@Saucery I am not a fan of apple pies anyway, but I do like apple & blackberry pies. They are both a bit dry though. Nice warmed up in the microwave for 10 seconds, with a bit of custard or ice cream. (Pull the cake/pie out of the tin foil 'cake-case' first though, before putting it in the microwave.) I'm sure you knew that sorry!

You’re totally missing the point!

the shiteness is part of the appeal! Delicious! 🧁🧁

Not quite that big but I'm sure I've seen a giant French Fancy celebration cake😂😂

tiredanddangerous · 12/06/2022 20:28

I'm surprised they're still around to be honest - I haven't eaten any since the nineties!

doodlejump1980 · 12/06/2022 20:29

I’ve just had a mr Kipling fruit tart. Claggy pastry and the filling has made my teeth go zing it was that sugary. Not buying again.

PestorPeston · 12/06/2022 20:29

Mr Kiplin makes exceedingly sweet cakes that sell like hot cakes. People really like them. People really like sugar.

AtomicBlondeRose · 12/06/2022 20:29

I make really good fruit pies but for some reason the Mr Kipling ones just hit the spot sometimes. And the bakewell tarts are delish (and not at all like “proper” ones, but nice all the same). Not fussed on anything else.

Yep. Fabulous cakes
