Mr Kipling does NOT make exceedingly good cakes!

I remember seeing this advert circa 1978 and thinking how nice those French Fancies looked, but upon buying a box and taking a bite, it was bloody awful!

Sickly, and synthetic tasting.

Over the years I've tried a few more of his offerings and they have all been a huge disappointment and are either tasteless or synthetically over sweet tasting.

I love an artificial cake just as well as the next person (or not apparently here!!) but the caged eggs did it for me. I rescue caged hens and I see the awful condition those girls end up in. Mr Kipling u turned on using free range eggs to maximise their profits and I won’t go there now.

Even the mince pies are awful - too sweet and with really bad pastry. I always avoid them at Christmas.

antelopevalley · 12/06/2022 20:58

I loved French Fancies as a teenager. Not had them since. I loved Cherry Bakewells in my late teens as well.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 12/06/2022 21:00

Mr Kiplings French Fancies are the ultimate cakes. There is no social setting in which they are unacceptable. You can serve them to at an adult birthday party, a kids birthday party, a leaving do, a wedding, a wake, you can even give them to Royalty... There are a totally foolproof food.

TheLadyDIdGood · 12/06/2022 21:00

M&S French fancies are much nicer than Kiplings ones.

Well, I think jt is safe to assume no 2 humans have the same palate, hence why we all like and dislike different things.....😬

I never said people WEREN'T allowed to have different views and different palates. I was just agreeing with another poster. What a strange and pointless post. Confused

Hesma · 12/06/2022 21:02

All bought cakes are a disappointment… home made are much tastier and not full of rubbish

KohlaParasaurus · 12/06/2022 21:05

They're exceedingly SMALL cakes nowadays. Or else my mouth has got a lot bigger over the years. And exceedingly expensive. I'll only buy them when they're reduced. I got a load of special edition French Fancies for cheap recently, DH was almost as excited as the time I came home with Fray Bentos pies. I've never found them dry or unpleasant, though, and like them for a two-bite treat.

I adored their apple and custard pies but for some reason, they discontinued them (the pure apple ones are sooo sweet, the custard really helped balance it)

@SanFranBear have you tried these? They’re my guilty pleasure Smile

Lemon French Fancies are delicious.

Agreed! My fave :)

Hallyup89 · 12/06/2022 21:12

French fancies are awful and always have been. I am partial to a country slice, although they may be awful too now, as I haven't had one for years.

maddiemookins16mum · 12/06/2022 21:13

Used to love the Country slices and the Manor House cake.

Eightiesfan · 12/06/2022 21:33

I agree, French fancies are grim, on the other hand Mr K’s almond slices are delicious!

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 12/06/2022 21:33

I’m very partial to a trifle bakewell but can’t find them very often. Astonished I have reached my mid 50s without realising that Mr Kipling makes Viennese Whirls!

Tothepoint99 · 12/06/2022 20:00

Cherry bakewell --every any day of the week!

This.

Can't eat me Kipling anymore as I'm gluten free sadly.

wineandsunshine · 12/06/2022 21:45

Many moons ago, I worked for Mr Kipling and the amount of discounted cake I purchased was incredible!

Still love it now CakeSmile

@PurpleButterflyWings they really are! The crumble goes everywhere, though Grin

buntingandcoffee · 13/06/2022 06:49

Agreed. They are awful.

Tho I have a soft spot for French Fancies. Tho they also make me feel sick!

Taytocrisps · 13/06/2022 09:18

I thought they were lovely back in the day but I've a sweet tooth and I wasn't very discerning. Wouldn't buy them now.

londonmummy1966 · 13/06/2022 17:54

Any one remember when Mary Berry set French Fancies as a GBBO technical. Looked a nightmare to make so probably just as well I don't like them very much.

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 13/06/2022 18:37

Mr kipling has shrunk with age.
I like the pink and yellow French fancies, not even my dog liked the chocolate ones. I look forward to Halloween because of the orange ones and the Xmas ones are dollops of sponge cream and teeth melting sugar with no flavour.
I like his country slices but there's only 6 in a box and they're wrapped in pairs in plastic, so I don't get them often.

motogirl · 13/06/2022 18:38

They are very sweet, but our tastes have changed over the years. In the 80's and 90's they were delicious
