I remember seeing this advert circa 1978 and thinking how nice those French Fancies looked, but upon buying a box and taking a bite, it was bloody awful!

Sickly, and synthetic tasting.

Over the years I've tried a few more of his offerings and they have all been a huge disappointment and are either tasteless or synthetically over sweet tasting.

WTF is wrong with you all... Bakewell Tarts are food of the Gods.

AllPlayedOut · 12/06/2022 20:31

I'm surprised they're still around to be honest - I haven't eaten any since the nineties!

Just how many did you eat in the '90s? Your post makes it sound like you singlehandedly kept the factory going.

Furrbabymama1987 · 12/06/2022 20:31

I only buy them for the kids but they've gone expensive for what they are. A box of Vienniese whirls is now something like £2.75 in Asda. They used to be half that.

SofiaSoFar · 12/06/2022 20:32

@ElenaSt Sickly, and synthetic tasting.

They're really terrible, aren't they. 😂

I have to say, I do have a bit of a soft spot for his Country Slices, though.

I love the Angel slices.

But they don't taste of anything? Not vanilla , not strawberry nothing at all. Can't understand food that tastes of F...K all. Why ingest the calories?

PurpleButterflyWings · 12/06/2022 20:33

Solmum1964 · 12/06/2022 20:28

Not quite that big but I'm sure I've seen a giant French Fancy celebration cake😂😂

OH MY GOOD GODDDD! You're right @Solmum1964

I NEEEEEEEEEED this is my life. Like, yesterday! Grin

They taste of deliciousness.

Have to agree. Angel slices have no taste IMO. Like Angel cake. Just bland and dry.

hels71 · 12/06/2022 20:35

When I was pregnant with DD I craved Mr Kipling cherry bakewells. I have no idea how many I ate!!!

Rubyroseyposey · 12/06/2022 20:36

Angel slices are lovely. Not fussed on rest. My daughter loves french fancies but I find them sickly.

powershowerforanhour · 12/06/2022 20:36

"I live a few miles from a factory where Mr Kipling's products are made. Last week we were opposite the factory when the road filled with smoke and the smell of burning cakes. "

I need to start panic buying in case production was affected. I like the almond slices. Agree with PP about plastic waste though. I don't mind consuming plasticky junk food but I don't like putting plasticky junk in the bin. So French Fancies are more eco.

Well, I think jt is safe to assume no 2 humans have the same palate, hence why we all like and dislike different things.....😬

Bluevelvetsofa · 12/06/2022 20:38

Get some French Fancies from Betty’s. Superior! While you’re at it, the lime and lemon loaf cake and ginger loaf cake are worth buying.

WingingItEveryDay7 · 12/06/2022 20:39

I used to love French fancies but they definitely don't taste the same. Aldi's version are much nicer!!

CaramelJones · 12/06/2022 20:40

Betty's French Fancies contain marzipan, which is the creation of Satan.

CaramelJones · 12/06/2022 20:40

The loaf cakes sound great though.

AlternativelyWired · 12/06/2022 20:40

I love the Bakewell slices, tarts and especially the Festive Bakewells. When I buy a box ds will nab it and I'll find it empty except for 6 little pieces of cherry where the cakes sat in the little tray.

The plastic waste is ridiculous on the slices and didn't there used to be 4 little packs of 2 in there? Now there's 3. And the slices are tiny. Two bites and they are gone. Sad times.

Sleepingsatellite1 · 12/06/2022 20:43

I liked them as I child but not now, the paste in the angel slices is synthetic crap and just tastes like nothing

Funnily enough my Mr Kipling contact told me that they make cakes for Aldi too and the fat mixture they use is better quality than the Mr K

Applespearsandoranges · 12/06/2022 20:46

To be honest after my large MN salad on a Sunday I cannot even understand how you’d have the room for cake… mr Kipling or otherwise

pushingpoppies · 12/06/2022 20:51

Also switched from free range to cage eggs, gaaaaah

VestaTilley · 12/06/2022 20:52

@TildaRae I remember those cupcakes! To me that’s still what a cupcake is.

Marlaah · 12/06/2022 20:52

Eurgh! Those French fondant fancies, the pink ones were ‘Orrid. I always knew it was Sunday when we had salad, bread and butter and cold meat followed by a Mr K cake, and no, they weren’t ‘exceedingly good’. The Bakewell tarts were another sickly sugar fest coated in that white icing.

FuzzyPuffling · 12/06/2022 20:54

TildaRae · 12/06/2022 20:04

I love French fancies. I can’t remember which brand it was maybe Mr Kipling, but I used to love the cupcakes in the 90s they had a thick yellow or orange icing slab on the top, haven’t seen them for about 25 years…

YES!
And before the orange and lemon ones there were chocolate ones. I remember these in the 1960s when I was a very small child. Such a treat - I'd peel the icing off and eat the cake first.
