I don't iron - should I?

Obviously if it's something like a shirt I do. But that is fairly infrequent. Day to day washing, I don't. I feel like the kids look scruffy sometimes with creased clothes. I do fold nicely and tumble dry when cannot line dry. But they get so dirty and messy that clothes are washed so frequently!

So:

YABU - you should iron most stuff.

YANBU - don't bother.

I don't iron anything- we don't even own an iron!

I don't iron a single thing. Ever. Uniforms etc get hung up when they get out of the washing machine and just dry unwrinkled.

Rodneytrotterslovechild · 07/06/2022 22:10

ive never bothered unless it’s really bad
my mother hates this and used to try to tell me how bad my lot looked
(she doesn’t bloody iron either-it was just a stick to beat me with)
they’d only end up looking like Victorian street urchins after half an hour anyway
and life (and childhood) is too short to worry about creases anyway

Queenoftheashes · 07/06/2022 22:10

I don’t iron. Boyfriend does because he wears shirts. More fool him.

XenoBitch · 07/06/2022 22:10

I don't iron anything either. I have tried, and I am awful at it.
When the ole MN trope of "can you take in ironing?" gets trotted out, it makes me laugh.

dementedpixie · 07/06/2022 22:11

I iron school shirts and dhs shirts only

ListenLinda · 07/06/2022 22:11

I iron on a need basis - if it needs it, I will. I dont stand and iron every item as it comes out of the dryer or off the washing line.
my dear Granny was horrified when I told her, as irons everything and I mean everything!

RaginaPhalange · 07/06/2022 22:12

Only thing I iron is a shirt and that was last October for my wedding

RampantIvy · 07/06/2022 22:12

It's a badge of honour on mumsnet not to iron.

My line dried clothes always look wrinkled, so I iron the ones that need ironing. I don't have many that do, and I don't hate ironing.

Tomatoblush · 07/06/2022 22:12

You are not being unreasonable at all.
I haven’t ironed anything for about 20 years. I fold it when it’s damp from the machine then hang out to dry. I then fold carefully and put it away. Even shirts.

bobbythevet · 07/06/2022 22:12

Can't vote as on the app. But- nope nope nopey nope. I only iron something if I really need to.

ItWasntMyFault · 07/06/2022 22:13

I don't iron anything, my iron broke years ago and I've never replaced it x

ItWasntMyFault · 07/06/2022 22:14

Ignore that x at the end of my last post!

SquigglePigs · 07/06/2022 22:14

The only things that get ironed in our house are DH's shirts for weddings, funerals or Christening type events. Life is too short for lots of ironing!!

liveforsummer · 07/06/2022 22:14

Christ no, i've no idea where my iron is and don't own a board. I'm fairly careful about hanging things flat and getting out rod the dirtier quickly bit no one ever looks scruffy - even DD's school shirts are fine.

MotherofPearl · 07/06/2022 22:14

I prefer things ironed but thankfully DP does 90% of the ironing in our house, usually while watching sport on tv at weekends.

namechangetheworld · 07/06/2022 22:19

Agree with PP that not owning an iron seems to be a bit of a badge of honour on Mumsnet. I can't be bothered ironing stuff like bedsheets or pillow cases (to my DM's horror) but do iron most of our clothes, because we'd look like bags of shit if I didn't.

rosebud5678 · 07/06/2022 22:23

When I first met my MIL I found out that she ironed my future DH's underpants...

Fast forward to having our own young family - the iron only used to make an appearance to make Hama bead pictures!

Honestly you wouldn't- I've never in my 42 years looked like a 'bag of shit' or even looked untidy

Hugasauras · 07/06/2022 22:32

We don't iron, except for weddings and funerals! None of us have clothes that require it and our washing machine/tumble dryer/line-drying do a fine job of washing drying things without them looking creased.

Hugasauras · 07/06/2022 22:33

I did have a really awful washing machine in my previous house that made everything so creased, so if you have one of those then I understand the ironing! It was bloody rotten.

CoffeeLover90 · 07/06/2022 22:38

I'm showing my mam this post. She's shocked that I iron nothing and honestly believes everyone does. Yet she was shocked to find that I didn't because my clothes aren't creased! I would for special occasions only.

Krabapple · 07/06/2022 22:42

I rarely iron - most clothes are fine if you fold them carefully off the line or tumble dryer. Obviously I would if needed but never do a pile of ironing like my mum & sister. You wouldn’t know either.

Ireolu · 07/06/2022 22:45

DH irons school uniform and his work clothes. I hate ironing so I don't bother with my clothes really or anything else.
