I don't iron - should I?

Obviously if it's something like a shirt I do. But that is fairly infrequent. Day to day washing, I don't. I feel like the kids look scruffy sometimes with creased clothes. I do fold nicely and tumble dry when cannot line dry. But they get so dirty and messy that clothes are washed so frequently!

So:

YABU - you should iron most stuff.

YANBU - don't bother.

@Rreaq nope most of my tops are cotton and no dryer but never feel the need to iron. I do only wear t-shirts- I'm sure if I had to wear shirts it would be different. And my trousers are nearly all jeans so they don't need ironing.

Sorry tagged wrong poster my post was to @PlattyJubes

We have a hobby where we need dress pants and shirts, and very occasionally they will need ironing - but more often than not everything dries crease-free enough to deal with!

I don't know why people spend hours of their lives ironing.

My gran even irons socks and underpants!

@Cuwins - Perhaps I am just fussy but I do iron Tshirts too. As I said ironing is probably the only household task that I actively enjoy. I am obviously very strange!

I do think that on MN there is a kind of "I am far too cool/busy/modern to iron". I also sew which might contribute to me thinking that most garments look and hang better after a good press!

This may be shocking but I also iron cloth napkins which are used on a daily basis. I appreciate such things are seen as old fashioned but each to their own.😁

Nope never iron apart from a shirt/trousers for a funeral or wedding but they are rare. I grew up seeing a massive ironing pile that my mum and dad used to waste their free time doing, and thankfully by the time I became an adult clothes didn't seem to get as creased!
I see people complain about their ironing pile now but not many these days.

Fair enough if you enjoy it. Before having my baby I definitely would have had time to do it if I wanted too (with a 3m old not so much!😂) but just never felt the need. I'm sure if either of us wore shirts then it would be different. I certainly don't consider myself cool or modern!

It's a badge of honour on mumsnet not to iron.

My line dried clothes always look wrinkled, so I iron the ones that need ironing. I don't have many that do, and I don't hate ironing.

This. But each to his own I guess

SVRT19674 · 08/06/2022 10:55

I used to. Now I only iron about 3 times a year.

Ragwort · 08/06/2022 11:26

Platty so do I, love using freshly ironed table napkins and I iron tea towels as well. DH still uses old fashioned cotton handkerchiefs so he irons those Grin. Perhaps my life isn't cool enough as I seem to have enough time to do a little ironing every week. I would far rather iron than have the expense of running a tumble dryer which seems perfectly acceptable to many people. Confused.

PlattyJubes · 08/06/2022 12:10

@Ragwort - think the first things I was allowed to iron were my DF's handkerchiefs😁. My late MIL bought lovely cotton handkerchiefs for my DDs when they were young as "no young lady should be without one". My teen DDs would not contemplate using them though so they sit unloved (but properly ironed)in a drawer 😥.

RampantIvy · 08/06/2022 12:30

I'm obviously not cool either @Ragwort Grin
I love the smell given off when I iron line dried clothes.

PurassicJark · 08/06/2022 12:39

I don't iron anything other than stuff for an interview or something important. But I wfh or go horse riding and the horses don't care if I iron stuff. 😂

elephantbreathing · 08/06/2022 12:41

Haven't got an iron, don't want one. Haven't ironed for 15 years plus.

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/06/2022 12:45

Stopped ironing about 3 years ago. No-one looks the worse for it.

good grief, I’ll never get those many days back 🙄

catsareme14 · 08/06/2022 12:56
