I don't iron - should I?

Obviously if it's something like a shirt I do. But that is fairly infrequent. Day to day washing, I don't. I feel like the kids look scruffy sometimes with creased clothes. I do fold nicely and tumble dry when cannot line dry. But they get so dirty and messy that clothes are washed so frequently!

So:

YABU - you should iron most stuff.

YANBU - don't bother.

God no I honestly can’t remember the last time I ironed. I would get rid of my iron and ironing board if it wasn’t for the fact that my DS very occasionally uses them. My sister, on the other hand, irons literally everything including underwear! I think she’s quite mad.

MatildaTheCat · 07/06/2022 22:56

Iron or don’t iron but don’t ever delude yourself it isn’t noticeable.

ironed clothes look better. Period.

ironed bedding feels lush.

Im not a martyr and cut plenty of corners but don’t understand the mn hatred of ironing. Surely cleaning is far more physically tiring but not many people are willing to say they proudly never bother to clean their bath?

JohannSebastianBach · 07/06/2022 22:59

Hell no!

I did have a really awful washing machine in my previous house that made everything so creased, so if you have one of those then I understand the ironing! It was bloody rotten.

It might well be our washing machine because I find that hanging things on hangers or on the line always results in wrinkled clothes, no matter how much I pull things into shape. However, our 18+ year old washer is still going strong, and I will only replace it when it breaks down and can't be repaired.

Jellycatspyjamas · 07/06/2022 23:01

I iron most things, I feel clothes just look better ironed. It takes me an hour on a Sunday to iron for 4 of us, so hardly a time sink. If I don’t get it done I’m not adverse to giving the kids an unironed T-shirt to wear, but they do look unironed.

Spacerader · 07/06/2022 23:02

I iron nothing. I will steam something if it desperately needs doing.

But honestly all this not ironing seems to be a badge of honour crap is annoying. 90% of the people I know don't iron.

Theses day washing machines are better at not crumpling up clothes, have anti crease and steam functions, and most clothes are now made with crease proof materials.

And if your there the moment that wash is finished to take it out shake it out and hang it there is no creses to iron out (some items excluded, usually formal wear, hence why I own a hand held Steamer?

When I first met my MIL I found out that she ironed my future DH's underpants...

Fast forward to having our own young family - the iron only used to make an appearance to make Hama bead pictures!

The only time i iron is when I'm ironing Hama beads!

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 07/06/2022 23:05

I can’t wear unironed clothes. I would hate it. I iron everything (excluding knickers/bras) I wear.

each to their own though.

RampantIvy · 07/06/2022 23:05

That doesn't work for me, but I have an old machine. I don't mind ironing anyway. I do it while watching TV.

PurpleNebula84 · 07/06/2022 23:07

Don't iron - unless it really really REALLY needs it, hanging it whilst damp or if you own a tumble dryer - tumble ironing - will suffice for most modern clothes. My mum spends hours doing this, that I genuinely don't get - she gets everything out of the tumble dryer and screws it up and throws it into a cupboard to iron - if she'd just shake it out and fold it, it would be one less job to do 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

InChocolateWeTrust · 07/06/2022 23:09

I only iron smart shirts or dresses for formal occasions.

Where t shirts etc are wrinkled the creases go with body heat within half hour of putting on.

If I ironed my leggings pretty sure they'd melt.

Childrens stuff doesnt get ironed. Pointless.

The only people I know who iron a lot are housewives/husbands with nothing better to do.

InChocolateWeTrust · 07/06/2022 23:11

@MatildaTheCat cleaning has sanitary benefits.

Ironing does not. It purely is about appearance.

Peachyscream · 07/06/2022 23:22

I iron everything except pants/socks/bedding. I sometimes fold pj's neatly and just press down with the iron so it looks tidy on the pile. I wish I didn't have to iron but my machine wrinkles everything 😕 my sister has a tumble dryer and her clothes had no creases at all..I couldn't believe it when I saw her chucking them into a basket and then moaning about ironing for hours. If she just folded or hung the clothes up right away there'd be no need.
Will definitely be getting a tumble dryer when I revamp the kitchen!

I dunno, I've just told my new partner I don't iron (over text) and I think he's breathing into a paper bag... Grin
Apparently he "finds it therapeutic" Confused

Only for weddings, funerals, christenings, graduations & Flora Day. We do have an iron in the house for dress making & hamma beads - it's so old it says 'Product of West Germany'.

Mally100 · 07/06/2022 23:44

I iron all tops or shirts. It dries well bit there's something about that pressed look that is so neat and polished. A white ironed t-shirt isn't comparable to a tumble dried one. Ironing is one chore I do enjoy though.

AffIt · 07/06/2022 23:51

I iron on a 'need to wear' basis, but only certain things, such as pure cotton or linen.

I absolutely do not iron anybody else's clothes. If they want them ironed, they can do it themselves.

2MinuteRice · 07/06/2022 23:58

Fine with me. We don't have an iron or ironing board.

Sparklingbrook · 08/06/2022 00:00

I iron because I don't want to go out with creased clothes, and I need to look smart for work. All school uniform was ironed.
I hang a lot of my washing on the line straight from the machine and it still needs ironing.

Up to you if you can't be bothered though.

LifeInsideMyhead · 08/06/2022 00:04

Dont iron here.
Ive been in school assemblies and most kids look the same as other kids. Its not kike a few stand out as "ironed". Similarly at work.

Our clothes comenout the washer or dryer fine if hung or folded soon. Really think it doesn't make any difference by the time you've left the house...

Feetache · 08/06/2022 00:05

I don't iron. I stuff things in dryer or airer. Not ironed for 15 years as work clothes no longer need it to look ok

SkiingIsHeaven · 08/06/2022 00:41

When I did iron, I only ironed the front because no one saw the sleeves or the back.

I don't iron any more as I don't generally wear shirts.

Ponderingwindow · 08/06/2022 00:43

No. I buy clothes that don’t need to be ironed. The rare exceptions are for special occasions.

Dishh · 08/06/2022 01:48

No.

Our tumble dryer died and we simply haven't bothered replacing it. Most things are folded fresh off the line and put away apart from DH's work shirts. He steam irons those.

That's it.

Ragwort · 08/06/2022 02:19

It's so typically Mumsnet to proudly declare that you don't iron Grin, I iron some things - genuinely doesn't bother me at all, probably takes less than ten minutes a week to iron the things I want to iron.

Far less time than 'cooking from scratch' which seems to be the badge of honour on here !
