Teachers should have guns

Smartsub · 25/05/2022 17:25

This was put forward (by a colleague) as a serious solution to prevent further tragedies in US.

I don't know how American teachers would feel, but I can't imagine any teachers wanting a gun in their desk.

However, AIBU to think that if this did happen, it would increase, not reduce tragedies, either students getting hold of a teacher's gun or a teacher themselves, in a MH crisis?

Yanbu, obviously, but your thread title is going to cause confusion.

Biker47 · 25/05/2022 17:29

Totally idiotic idea, and I say that as someone who owns firearms and shotguns. Nothing will change in America for a long long time, if ever.

CounsellorTroi · 25/05/2022 17:30

And one gun would be useless against an assault weapon.

StoneofDestiny · 25/05/2022 17:30

Ridiculous idea. Less guns, not more guns are needed.
US police are armed, armed guards patrol schools in many states - that doesn't stop maniacs with guns bursting into schools and public places killing people. Why does anybody imagine a teacher with a gun will change that?

Cornettoninja · 25/05/2022 17:31

my gut reaction is that adding more guns to America’s situation isn’t the best idea tbh.

Smartsub · 25/05/2022 17:31

Also imagine being a teacher expected to shoot your student...

OchonAgusOchonOh · 25/05/2022 17:32

That is already happening in some parts of the US. I read an article a year or two ago about how the are training teachers up on gun use and they are armed and ready to go in the classroom.

hattie43 · 25/05/2022 17:34

It's not the answer .

ritsbiscuits · 25/05/2022 17:37

Fucking hell, as if teachers don’t have enough to deal with. Now they are expected to take up arms to protect their class, be trained in gun use, be expected to actively shoot somebody, potentially one of their students. Not to mention the teacher being at risk of the gun being used on them.

Mumoblue · 25/05/2022 17:41

If guns stopped gun attacks then that would have happened already. America isn’t exactly lacking in guns.

Purplepeoniesdroppingpetals · 25/05/2022 17:46

Crazy idea and I know plenty of US educators who would just down tools and walk out faced with that prospect. My heart bleeds for those kids and my colleagues.

locok · 25/05/2022 17:46

stupid

StoneofDestiny · 25/05/2022 17:58

If you point a gun at someone you have to be prepared to kill someone's with it. Thankfully killing people doesn't come naturally to the majority of people. It's more likely and normal thinking citizen will be disarmed by a maniac or shot first.

flumposie · 25/05/2022 18:02

As a teacher this horrifies me. Absolutely no way I would do that.

Lonelycrab · 25/05/2022 18:03

As has been said already, you don’t solve the problem of too many guns by adding more guns to the equation.

Awful situation over there. I can only hope that one day they’ll see sense and bring in proper controls, but with the mentality of the republicans and NRA sadly there’s little chance.

bridgetreilly · 25/05/2022 18:06

One gun may or may not get fired. Bring in another gun and almost certainly they both get fired. It’s the worst possible response.

SilverGlassHare · 25/05/2022 18:07

I can’t imagine anything more likely to lead to additional casualties than an inexperienced and frightened teacher being involved in a shoot out with an armed intruder in a classroom full of terrified small children.

DoYouZoo · 25/05/2022 18:07

Very clear evidence that this would not solve the issues with gun crime.

The only thing that is going to solve the issue is tighter gun laws.

PowerhouseOfTheCell · 25/05/2022 18:08

School shooters are typically armed to the teeth/ wearing bullet proof gear so the teacher is going to have to be prepared to make a head shot, right, first time. And surely this makes the teacher the first target Confused potentially leaving the only adult in the room dead.
What about if students make a plan to overpower the teacher for the gun or the teacher gets the gun out on the pupils?

Hoppinggreen · 25/05/2022 18:08

Guns are an issue? Let’s get more people to carry guns?
Bloody stupid

fyn · 25/05/2022 18:08

When I went to high school in America we had an armed police officer in the school at all times. It was a nice school in a very middle class area, children used to drive new mustangs and BMW’s to school as an idea of income level.

Your colleague is deranged. Keep him/her away from sharp objects.

Fucking no-one should have a gun!

Thank goodness we live in the UK.

orbitalcrisis · 25/05/2022 18:17

Just train all the children in firearm use and arm them too!
