Teachers should have guns

Smartsub · 25/05/2022 17:25

This was put forward (by a colleague) as a serious solution to prevent further tragedies in US.

I don't know how American teachers would feel, but I can't imagine any teachers wanting a gun in their desk.

However, AIBU to think that if this did happen, it would increase, not reduce tragedies, either students getting hold of a teacher's gun or a teacher themselves, in a MH crisis?

Honestly, they just need to stop making and selling bullets. They will use the ones they have left up soon enough then that's it.

I suspect they'll just start manufacturing their own bullets.

thistimelastweek · 25/05/2022 20:05

Yup. Everyone knows the good guy with the gun always wins. Give some untrained bloke a gun and he will defeat the baddie every time.

Fucks sake, we've all seen the movies.

What could possibly go wrong with giving the teacher a gun?

(Unless he's useless with a gun or a baddie himself. )

Wheresmywoolyjumpers · 25/05/2022 20:21

There is always some numpty who comes up with this after a mass shooting. Like teachers want to be bodyguards too. and having a loaded gun around a bunch of kids is such a good idea.

swedex · 25/05/2022 20:26

Your colleague is a duck

swedex · 25/05/2022 20:26

Dick!!

BurnDownTheDiscoHangTheDJ · 25/05/2022 20:33

What will solve the terrifying gun soup? Chuck a few more guns into the pot! Fucking hell.

This. There are as many guns in Canada yet Canadians manage not to carry out several school shootings a month. Why is that?

Because the genie is out of the bottle and this is something that people ‘do’. It’s part of americas zeitgeist now.

if I had to make a prediction the US banning guns wouldn’t make a difference to the number of mass attacks like this but they could significantly reduce the harm inflicted.

My American DILs granny has 97 guns and an ammunition making room in her cellar in Idaho. She has small pistols to go in your 'purse', hunting rifles and automatic weapons . DILs mother doesn't have a gun. She carries a large knife in her bag and has a machete in the side pocket of her car. They came to the UK for the wedding and were horrified that we are not armed. Totally different world.

rainsunsnow · 25/05/2022 20:45

Absolute insanity.

Were they disappointed that they couldn't fire a couple of shots in the air when the groom kissed the bride at the wedding?

This. There are as many guns in Canada yet Canadians manage not to carry out several school shootings a month. Why is that?

Canada has had more than it's fair share of mass shootings.

A combination of fewer guns and more social care is what's needed.

Never ever going to happen.

Kpo58 · 25/05/2022 20:54

I can't help but wonder if American are bringing in so many anti abortion legislations because otherwise they will have a decreasing population due to how many children are being killed by guns.

Hospedia · 25/05/2022 20:56

This idea is like trying to put out a fire by throwing petrol on it.

ouch321 · 25/05/2022 21:03

If this isn't your viewpoint you should put quote marks around the sentence in your title otherwise it is very misleading...

RhannionKPSS · 25/05/2022 21:04

Your colleague is not only unreasonable but stupid

LuaDipa · 25/05/2022 21:08

Imagine thinking that arming teachers is a more logical solution that sensible gun control regulations.

AnneElliott · 25/05/2022 21:09

I think it's crazy but I think a fair number of Americans support it. When we got talking to some people in a restaurant in New York about 7 years ago they offered this as their solution. We were quite surprised as before they said that they seemed relatively normal!

ladygindiva · 25/05/2022 21:10

Yanbu. The only answer is strong gun control, as Britain has proved, but for some reason many Americans don't want to know.

Tiredalwaystired · 25/05/2022 21:25

You’d need one with a silencer for the school library, mind.

Ijsbear · 25/05/2022 22:15

orwellwasright · 25/05/2022 19:53

I'm going one better. We need to arm all the kids. Obviously not assault rifles for kindergarten. They can just have hand guns.

careful how you say that, the NRA will jump on it enthusiastically.

XenoBitch · 25/05/2022 22:30

Awful idea. That is fighting fire with fire. Knife crime is a huge issue in the UK. Would you say it is appropriate for people to carry knives to protect themselves from other people with knives?
You also have the issue of a teacher potentially having to shoot a student. That is a huge burden to have to deal with. And the need for specialist training too.. not only so they know what body parts to aim at, but also to avoid shooting other people too. No one goes into teaching expecting to be taught that.
Start from the ground. Better mental health support for teens, and training for teachers to be able to spot issues and signpost them. Proper support for students that are being bullied, and punishments for the people bullying them.
No one wakes up one day and decides to shoot up a school.

growandhope · 25/05/2022 23:00

this assumes that every teacher in the US is a well-balanced, restrained, mentally well individual who will only fire in dire situations. How does he propose to guarantee this or does he just assume this is the case. You could be handing a gun to a maniac.

MelonsMelonsMelons · 25/05/2022 23:01

Yes, the obvious solution to the situation is…… more guns.

Brefugee · 25/05/2022 23:04

Only people who haven't fired guns, had to fire guns or seen gunshot wounds come out with piffle like this.

Mass shootings are very rare in Canada, to the point where it’s hard to even find statistics. There were 3 mass shootings in total between 2010 and 2014.
