@Pricklesinperil I’m so sorry for not updating you! Monday evening i witnessed the mating dance between my two hogs - the one I had been worried about is (I think) a larger male and the smaller and darker one female. The female was feeding when the male came out from the bush - she was grunting he was fluffing his shoulder prickles and pushing his head along the ground like a dog submitting to another dog! He pushed forwards, she went backwards and This went on for about half an hour then the male disappeared next door! They did the same several more times through the night as I heard the grunting!

last night I saw the male have a good long drink before disappearing. I feel so privileged to have witnessed the hogs - if it wasn’t for your thread @Pricklesinperil I never would have put out food and water so Thankyou so much xx

@blobby10 - no apologies necessary! I’m so pleased to hear that the hedgehog was ok and has returned to normal hedgehog activity <ahem!>

@Pricklesinperil I peeked under the cover at about 7pm and woke him/her up - they disappeared later and returned for dinner at sometime after dark.

@Dreikanter - lovely to hear your hedgehog was ok and returned to normal activity!

@echt welcome to our thread! I thought your eyes emoji was perfect as we are all looking out for hedgehogs 😀

There is something you can do for hedgehogs even though you’re the other side of the world. Can you share the Hedgehog Street website with any friends or family you might have in the UK and ask them to help hedgehogs? It’s also an app!

ask here if you have any questions or thoughts

bumping, although thankfully it has cooled down, hedgehogs and other wildlife still need fresh water

@MrsMAgain Lovely that you are getting such a close up display. It always cheers me up watching them.

@Pricklesinperil Haha no very rarely up that early but I woke and thought I might as well get up and walk the dog while it was cool enough. I wish I was an early bird though, got so much done!

We think we may have four hedgehogs in our garden. Two were out feeding quite early last night, around 8.30pm. Watched them leave. Went out half an hour later to fill up the bowls and two more already there. Glad it’s cooled down for them a bit.

Competition! Do you have or can you create Britain’s Biggest Hedgehog Street? Submit your entry by Saturday 10th September . The winning street will receive the accolade of being Britain’s Biggest Hedgehog Street, plus all manner of hedgehog goodies.#BiggestHedgehogStreet

Britain’s Biggest Hedgehog Street

Hedgehog highways are vital for hedgehogs, allowing them to move through our urban landscape on their nightly searches for food, shelter and mates. By installing hedgehog highways in garden fences and walls, we can link habitat together and create Hedgehog Streets! And this summer, we’re looking for Britain’s Biggest Hedgehog Street.

What’s the competition?

The most gardens linked together on one street!

Hint: Be creative… Think about tunnels under fences and walls, and linking front and back gardens together.

We’ll have some prizes for extra categories as well, so tell us all about your hedgehog highway even if you’re unsure if it’s big enough to win! We’re looking for things like community effort, decorated highways and creative solutions.

Hedgehogs can travel a mile or more in a single night, but will struggle if there are walls and fences in the way. Every Hedgehog Street is important so tell us about yours!

How long do we have?

The competition closes on Saturday 10th September, so you have plenty of time to plan your Hedgehog Street and submit your entry!

How do we get involved?

The submission page can be found here, accessible once you’re a registered Hedgehog Champion.

We’ve put together some resources to help you get started:

A dedicated Britain’s Biggest Hedgehog Street invitation, to post through neighbours’ doors and get them involved.
A window poster showing that you’re helping hedgehogs with a hedgehog highway!
All of our other free downloadable resources for Hedgehog Champions including posters, leaflets, action cards and fact sheets.
The winning street will receive the accolade of being Britain’s Biggest Hedgehog Street, plus all manner of hedgehog goodies.

If you have any questions get in touch via [email protected]

#BiggestHedgehogStreet

Remember to share your efforts using the hashtag #BiggestHedgehogStreet, and keep an eye on PTES and BHPS social media as we’ll be sharing hints, tips and examples throughout the summer.

Good luck!

Hedgehog street is such a good idea.

Eckno · 22/07/2022 22:19

That’s a great idea.
I managed to get a picture tonight. They are coming earlier and earlier and beating me to the feeding box!

Lovely pic @Eckno ! If they are coming earlier, it’s probably because they know they are guaranteed a 5* feed and watering at yours.

it’s brilliant of you to care for them, they may not be able to access guaranteed water and supplementary food anywhere else

Still getting my small dark hog every night around 9pm scoffing loads of food then having a huge drink! We don't always see the bigger lighter coloured hog at the same time but I'm sure he's around. Still desperately hoping that the grunting from a couple of weeks ago resulted in hoglets and that they will be born under my shed in a couple of weeks! 🤞🤞

Dreikanter · 26/07/2022 10:26

I’m having to top up the plate after first hog scoffs the whole lot - there’s at least one and possibly two more hogs that swing by in quick succession.

HopeSpringsInfernal · 26/07/2022 14:04

I went out to feed my hog at 10pm last night (usual time). He generally shows up any time between 10.30 - 11pm. Lifted up the feeding station and there he was trying to eat from an almost empty bowl - I don't know who got the biggest fright, me or him!

He curled up for a bit then scurried off to hide iin the border. I topped the food up, he eventually came out and finished his supper.

He was a pretty big lad close up!

Was half an hour late putting food out last night and was shunned by all hogs (and the local cats).

Hoping to get my Michelin star back tonight.
