bumping again!

Blowyourowntrumpet · 01/08/2022 12:39

I've been doing this since I first saw the thread and last night I saw a hedgehog there for the first time 🦔🦔. Usually the cat drinks it.
I'm so pleased 🦔

Bumping as It’s still so dry here on the South Coast …. and no rain forecast for any time soon …. Poor hot and thirsty hedgehogs…….

Dreikanter · 02/08/2022 09:03

One hog has finally returned (no food has been eaten over the last couple of nights) and troughed a plate of kitten food.

Wheelyweddingwipedout · 02/08/2022 12:13

Good news @Dreikanter !

bumping as it’s still so hot and dry here on the south coast

blobby10 · 02/08/2022 15:26

My smaller hog is still visiting every night - I suspect she waits for the rattle of the food on the dish as I put it down as she's out within 10 minutes! The bigger hog visited on Friday night for food but I don't know if they went off together. Both seem to be scratching a bit - is that usual? Would i be able to tell if the smaller one is pregnant ? I haven't heard any more grunting since the marathon night about 3 weeks ago so if she got pregnant then, the babies should be due in a couple of weeks.

Wheelyweddingwipedout · 03/08/2022 16:49

Bumping because we had a bit of rain in the South today but no more rain is forecast for a while - please keep leaving out water for wildlife

😁at your hedgehog listening out for the sound of the food hitting the dish @blobby10 !

Hedgehog Street says “Hedgehogs usually give birth in June and July, though the hoglet season can begin in early spring following a mild winter and stretch until autumn” so don’t give up hope yet.

in the meantime, sharing a video and a pic from the Hedgehog Street gallery

So the female hedgehog is in effect a single mum with no support from the male? Thats interesting - I've seen the male birds teaching the babies to fly and feed but hadn't realised hedgehogs were totally different!

Something is draining my two water bowls every night so they are obviously very thirsty still. Even if its been cooler recently, everywhere is really dry so I'm going to echo @Pricklesinperil and others on this thread and say PLEASE leave out water still.

Pricklesinperil · 05/08/2022 12:10

@blobby10 - yes! After mating, the male leaves, taking no part in rearing the young. Hedgehog lifecycle

thank you for leaving out the water - It’s a lifesaver

Yay! A sighting for me at last, around 930 last night, my hog looking pretty healthy I think. It’s been a good few months now since I’ve seen her/him now.

We noticed a hedgehog in our garden during the two days of heatwave as we were sitting outside late at night. The following night we were sitting in the front lounge with the window open and heard it eating and purring in the front garden. They are the sweetest creatures. I've been leaving water and wet cat food out ever since. This week I realized it was nesting in our flower bed (very small town garden) and then I realised there was more than one. I then kept.an eye and at night spotted a mum and two babies making their way out under our garden fence. It's so exciting and lovely to see.

Pricklesinperil · 06/08/2022 16:12

@Lonelycrab I love that photo! Your hedgehog is very cute! How did you manage to take it at that angle?

I do hope you’re registered as a Hedgehog Champion because you can share all your photos there and you’ll be credited if they use them!Hedgehog Street- become a hedgehog champion

I’m registered on the site you linked to earlier Prickles but no I’m not a champion lol! I got the second photo by using night mode on my iPhone, sort of rested the camera on the floor at a funny angle I realised, lens stays open for a couple of seconds to get enough light so I was praying s/he stayed still! First was with the flash obviously but didn’t want to do a close up with flash for obvious reasons.

Go cat is alright for leaving food isn’t it? It’s just the wet food soon gets hoovered up by the local mogs….

I’ve just watched Countryfile and the trailer for next week showed hoglets being cared for at Oxfordshire Wildlife Rescue along with other creatures - all great and small!

it’s on BBC1 at 7pm next Sunday
