People sitting on my wall

Bottomsonwalls · 21/05/2022 21:58

A couple of times a month I come
home to find someone casually sitting on my wall, during the day. Is this fine? It bothers me but I can’t really say why it bothers me, other than it being MY walk (but perhaps that’s petty?)

we also get drunk people sitting on our wall in the evening but that’s much rarer (it’s also a lot more annoying but again not sure what I can do about it as I don’t really want to confront drunk people at 1am)

Throw things at them.

angeLavn · 21/05/2022 22:01

They shouldn't be sitting on your wall. A deterrent of some sort? Spiky plants?

Unless you're situated near a bus stop?

Dinotastic · 21/05/2022 22:03

Get a few of those spikes put in… the kind Tory councils put on flat surfaces in cities to stop people sleeping on them (which I think is grim, to be clear, but in your case sounds justified!)

Johnnysgirl · 21/05/2022 22:03

Stick a trellis on top.

FloydWasACat · 21/05/2022 22:03

I 'conveniently' take the rubbish out and ask if they are ok? They move soon after, I have it too OP

plaidpajamas · 21/05/2022 22:04

They shouldn't be doing it - put a small metal spiky fence along the wall?

Isaidnoalready · 21/05/2022 22:04

A wall is not too bad I had teenagers sitting on my hedge I tried to warn them that there was a wasps nest underneath it they told me to fuck off so I left them too it the screams were....loud

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 21/05/2022 22:04

This would wind me up. Can you install one of those chains with spikes that I've seen on people's low walls to prevent this?

KarenLovesRosario · 21/05/2022 22:05

Wet paint sign for a while then bit of wire mesh fencing on top or something to make it higher/block it.

BertieQueen · 21/05/2022 22:06

Are you near a bus stop?

when I was younger my parents were viewing houses and really liked one but there was a bus stop outside it. They drove past a few times over the week and every time there was people/kids sitting on the wall waiting for a bus. They pulled out from buying it as they said it would annoy them.

OrangeVelour · 21/05/2022 22:07

I live on a fairly steep hill and often get older people sitting on my wall for a little rest on their way up. I quite like it that they sit there ~ they're not doing any harm. I'd be a bit annoyed if the local pissheads sat there though.

StoneofDestiny · 21/05/2022 22:07

It would bother me as sooner or later it will become 'a seat' and collapse. Put on a deterrent ie jaggedly rocks, share edged bricks or spikes.

Bottomsonwalls · 21/05/2022 22:08

Ok glad it’s not just me who finds this incredibly irksome! Im no where near a bus stop, so it’s very odd. Sometimes people have actually left coffee cups on the wall.

I like the idea of asking them if they are ok. I’m not keen on the idea of spikes though as I have small children and also I don’t really want to make my wall look ugly because of annoying people.

Search for hostile architecture. It's not just spikes that will make your wall unattractive to potential sitters.

aNewYorkerInLondon · 21/05/2022 22:11

@Bottomsonwalls, could you plant something thorny? (My first thought was nettles but you said you have children so that's probably not the best. 😆)

Bottomsonwalls · 21/05/2022 22:14

@angeLavn some genius ideas! I am now quite taken with the idea of wall coloured spikes so people get a surprise 😆

Nerf gun.

Speakuptomakeyourselfheard · 21/05/2022 22:21

Depending on the height of the wall I'd be wary of putting spikes on it, as if someone, possibly even yourself or your children, had a fall, then they could end up hurting themselves on the spikes.

wallpoppy · 21/05/2022 22:22

Are they damaging your wall? Is your front garden really small so your wall is essentially right next to your front window so it's like they are sitting in your living room with you? Do YOU want to sit on your wall but they are stopping you?

If none of of the above are true I would truly not care in the slightest. It seems mean and petty to stop people from resting and being comfortable.

gamerchick · 21/05/2022 22:43

Burglar grease?

SausageDogNamedBrenda · 21/05/2022 22:49

We had this exact problem, we lived next to a nursery and parents would plonk themselves on our wall whilst waiting at pick up time. We got these fitted and solved the problem overnight!

@SausageDogNamedBrenda

thank you! That’s a non dangerous and not too bad looking solution

no but sometimes they leave rubbish. And sometimes it is drunk people which is pretty horrible. It just feels quite rude/entitled. I don’t want to be petty but it’s similar to someone parking in front of my drive if I don’t need to go anywhere/my car isn’t there. Like no, maybe I don’t want to use it but it’s my wall…

Sprinklers are always a nice surprise for wall-sitters.

Just Google wall top railings, we got ours from a local fence company and DH fitted them. It was funny the next morning when people sort of looked at the wall and moved along😀 it was instant success!
