People sitting on my wall

Bottomsonwalls · 21/05/2022 21:58

A couple of times a month I come
home to find someone casually sitting on my wall, during the day. Is this fine? It bothers me but I can’t really say why it bothers me, other than it being MY walk (but perhaps that’s petty?)

we also get drunk people sitting on our wall in the evening but that’s much rarer (it’s also a lot more annoying but again not sure what I can do about it as I don’t really want to confront drunk people at 1am)

As a disabled person sometimes a garden wall is a lifesaver. I appreciate it is someone’s wall but if I am starting to have an anxiety attack because I need to sit down it is the best option. I am very appreciative if someone is there to ask if I can sit down for a minute or two.

Blaze1886 · 22/05/2022 08:05

You can get metal railings but pricey

KangFang · 22/05/2022 08:09

You could smear the top of the wall with fat or cooking oil. It won't be visible but anyone who has sat with that on the wall won't come back.

Bottomsonwalls · 22/05/2022 08:18

@KangFang

god I love this idea. Won’t it attract flies or beetles or something??

@Crazylazydayz

this is a good point and one I hadn’t considered but it’s hard to believe everyone doing it is having an anxiety attack or otherwise

Smear the wall with honey or sprinkle with sugar and let the ants come.....

Nocaloriesinchocolate · 22/05/2022 08:20

Yo can get plastic spikes, which I imagine would do less damage than meta ones. We’ve just bought some to deter the neighbourhood yob cat (darling lad but not neutered!)

MintyMoocow · 22/05/2022 08:24

What, someone sits on your wall ONCE A WEEK?

😱

SpatzBurger · 22/05/2022 08:27

We get this sometimes too OP and it irritates me.
Our next door neighbour has carers four times a day and they sit on my wall for a cigarette break. I love my neighbours and they don't want to be in a position of needing carers so I would never say anything to them.
I usually pretend I'm putting something in the boot of the car and say "oh hello?" And then they jump up and sit in their cars.
All very strange as the neighbour who has the carers has the exact same height wall, yet they sit on mine.

Lindy2 · 22/05/2022 08:28

How strange to just sit randomly on a wall that isn't by a bus stop. There must be something attracting people to that particular spot.

Are you on a walking route, by a shop, near a train station or something similar?

I don't think I would begrudge someone needing a short rest as long as they weren't being disruptive. Perhaps you should contact your council and let them know there is a need for a public bench in that area.

This thread and the one about using half empty bins about to be emptied anyway really show how we've learned not to sweat the small stuff over the course of a two year pandemic.

ElenaSt · 22/05/2022 08:41

Laminated posters on the wall.

MISSING TARANTULA
Our beloved tarantula Lucy is mussing.
Last seen on this wall.
Please call XXXXXXXX if you.see her.

Obviously use a made up number.

Crazylazydayz · 22/05/2022 08:53

I agree most people are not in my situation. I think the key is are they being respectful.

OldTinHat · 22/05/2022 09:29

I used to have this where I lived before. I had a scary looking but friendly staffie who loved everyone. I'll get flamed for this - the front garden was secure but I'd open the front door to 'put out rubbish', my softie dog would go flying out (prompted by me) to say hello to the people sat on the wall then, oh! The people had suddenly gone and my dog would be disappointed at the missed opportunity of tickles and treats.

Norgie · 22/05/2022 09:33

I used to have this....until I poured used cooking oil along the top of the wall.

Wilkolampshade · 22/05/2022 09:35

Railings OP.
(Or a smear of marmite)

Walkingthedog46 · 22/05/2022 09:36

Just concrete in a series of large (preferably jagged!) stones along the length of the wall.

That would only work if it were the same people all the time, instead of a succession of randoms?

Well, yes, you would need to keep adding oil periodically to ward off anyone sitting on the wall.
It would certainly keep away any regulars though.

SmurfetteBlue · 22/05/2022 11:17

I know someone who put vaseline on their wall. Not very noticeable but it does the job!

darisdet · 22/05/2022 11:32

I'd be worried about them hammering on my door to complain about their clothes with the oil. Though it would be amusing.

You see flat metal studs around churches and museums to prevent people sitting. I don't know the practicalities, or cost, of having something like that fitted.

MoodyTwo · 22/05/2022 13:09

Ohh no ! I sit on a wall half way up to school to rest , I also have been known to sit in it and feed my baby :-(

Why? How far is the school from your house?

Bottomsonwalls · 22/05/2022 14:14

@MoodyTwo

if I saw someone using my wall to feed their baby that would be fine. It’s just annoying someone sitting there having a coffee or, as another Pp said, a cigarette. Particularly if they leave their stuff there. It’s actually not near shops or anything else so it is odd. Maybe it just looks like a comfortable wall!

We had this in a previous house, it didn’t bother me one bit, but similarly to you bothered my DH.

it would irritate me if they were drunk and being noisy at night for sure.

The only occasion it did irritate me is when a group of people were blocking the path to my own front door, sat around on my wall, then told me to “keep my dog away” as they don’t like dogs, when I was literally trying to gain access to my own home… I curtly told them I live there and if they had an issue they should remove themselves from my property.
