People sitting on my wall

Bottomsonwalls · 21/05/2022 21:58

A couple of times a month I come
home to find someone casually sitting on my wall, during the day. Is this fine? It bothers me but I can’t really say why it bothers me, other than it being MY walk (but perhaps that’s petty?)

we also get drunk people sitting on our wall in the evening but that’s much rarer (it’s also a lot more annoying but again not sure what I can do about it as I don’t really want to confront drunk people at 1am)

Spread some extremely smelly manure on the flower bed beside the wall. The whiff will see off unwanted sitters.

Finalcountdowntoourtripaway · 22/05/2022 14:25

Op you miss a trick. Rush out on a pinny with a pad and pen and ask would they like to see the menu?

ElenaSt · 22/05/2022 14:27

What about some kind of motion activated garden ornament that shouts fuck off?

Howlongwillthistake · 22/05/2022 14:29

This happened to us at our house as we're near a bus stop. One night I was so sick of the loud shrieking from the girls in the group, god only knows why girls shriek at 3000 decibels, that I decided to go out and join them.
I walked up the drive, and politely asked them to 'hotch up' a bit so I could fit on the wall, and sat in between them all.
I just sat and waited..... after about 15 seconds and silence they all just got up and wondered off. I presume that they didn't want me listening to their conversations.
To be fair, I was half bricking it and half joyously congratulating myself.
They never came back.. win win 🏆

CambsAlways · 22/05/2022 14:31

We had it and it drove me demented!

MoreThanJustANumber · 22/05/2022 15:17

I have a bad back and need to stop every now and again to enable me to continue. I normally plan my route based on bus stops or public benches as I'm really aware I would rather not sit on a someone's wall. In an emergency I normally choose a wall that has a fence behind it so people in the house are less likely to see me and be bothered, and I just sort of perch/lean against the wall rather than properly sitting.
It's lovely to see so many people saying it wouldn't bother them too much though, I won't be smoking or eating, and will often pretend to be texting so it looks like I've got a reason to stop as I'm really embarrassed about how little I can walk nowadays.

wallpoppy · 22/05/2022 16:25

so many of you are genuinely awful selfish hateful people. You would not only begrudge a tired person a rest, you would ruin their clothes with oil or injure them with spikes.

Kite22 · 22/05/2022 16:30

We have people sitting on our wall quite regularly - we are near a GP surgery and people sit whilst waiting for a taxi or their lift, or just because they are puffed out after walking up the hill.

As long as they don't leave rubbish, I can't get worked up about it.
When we first moved in, I was a bit surprised, but then I thought about it and realised it wasn't damaging anything, or preventing me doing anythings, so I can't see why it is an issue.

🤣🤣🤣
Only those that sit on op's wall. She's not going out into the community and hunting them down.
Maybe she should start inviting them in for a little nap in the guest bedroom instead?

Exactly this. "Hostile architecture" used cooking oil, spikes ffs. No wonder this country is fucked. It's infested with small-minded, selfish Tory bastards.

Norgie · 22/05/2022 16:45

I don't want youngsters sitting on my wall with their foul language and weed, along with dumping their cig ends and other rubbish I to my garden, so I'll carry on with my oiling thanks.
If that makes me a terrible person, then so be it.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 22/05/2022 16:50

OP has said that they’re leaving rubbish behind. At that point it’s ok to say “no more” without being called selfish (or a Tory, quite a shoe-horn there that apparently everyone who does something someone else doesn’t like is “a Tory”…). In fact, the selfish ones are those who’ve been leaving the rubbish behind.

I wouldn’t pour oil or smear Vaseline, but I would remove the option of sitting on the wall with plants or a fence.

MyGirlDaisy · 22/05/2022 16:53

My 87 year old mother sits on walls. It’s a new thing, she has vascular issues with her legs. She is well behaved, doesn’t throw litter and is never drunk, lots of people need a rest now and again for various reasons.
If it was late at night and rowdy that’s different- but during the day I can’t see a problem.
Lets hope all in favour of spikes, cooking fat etc don’t find themselves in the same position as my mother in years to come!

whatnumber · 22/05/2022 16:53

Could you put loads of stones on the wall as a temporary measure to see how that works.
This would drive me mad but I also agree with the posters telling us off for having a bad attitude and not being very nice Confused! I'm very confused!

OP getting the hump with people littering her property with coffee cups and fag ends. Therefore she is a Tory. Righto 🤯

Norgie · 22/05/2022 17:39

All of those who need to sit on a wall due to mobility or ill health, are you or they able to hoik yourselves up onto a 3.5 foot high wall?
I would say not, so therefore my oily wall doesn't affect you.
But hey, I'm a Tory bastard allegedly 😂

Spread some extremely smelly manure on the flower bed beside the wall. The whiff will see off unwanted sitters.

The police advised my parents to do this when the local feral youths took a shine to their wall and also started wandering around their garden. It worked a treat.

wallpoppy · 22/05/2022 18:18

I feel like the "but they leave coffee cups and fag ends" bit was dropped in as a drip feed to justify OPs otherwise silly and selfish desire to have her wall un-sat upon. People sit on my wall every day (it's halfway up a very steep hill in a touristy part of town) and I never noticed any fag ends or cups. But maybe OPs wall isn't as nice as mine and attracts a lower quality of sitter.

It reminds me of a neighbour where I used to live who tried to get control of a right-of-way path on the edge of his property and I guess he wanted to claim people were littering, but didn't realise I could see right over the path from my loft window... where I saw him spreading rubbish from a small bag and photographing it, presumably to send to the council. I left him to it for a moment then shouted down KEITH YOU GOING TO PICK ALL THAT UP NOW? and he jumped a mile 😹 and he did, indeed, pick it up.

Bottomsonwalls · 22/05/2022 18:18

Extremely impressed that my political stance is so obvious to a poster based on whether or not I like drunk and/or littering people on my wall! Agree with a PP who says I should offer them a nap indoors.

@Howlongwillthistake That is an incredible story, very admirable. I wouldn’t have the balls to do it so hats off to you

@ElenaSt What about some kind of motion activated garden ornament that shouts fuck off? this is the best suggestion. What would actually be great would be if I put a walkie talkie in the gnome so I could personalise the message from my window “you there, in the black hoody smoking the fag. Kindly fuck off”.

ive never seen an elderly or infirm person - it’s always fairly young people. I’m glad I’m not the only one who finds it annoying because I can’t even really say WHY, apart from noise and rubbish, it is annoying. But it is.

its hardly a drip feed, I didn’t mention it initially as it doesn’t happen every time. I did originally mention the drunken louts though. I’ve also said it annoys me regardless of the rubbish.

i think it’s quite interesting actually; I mean IS it selfish to not want someone to use something of mine just because it’s mine? I’m not using it, but how far do you extend that? If someone parks in your drive every day but you never actually need the drive would that bother you? It’s not impeding you so who cares, right?

OP posts:
Bottomsonwalls · 22/05/2022 18:28

this is my wall (if you know me, yes, I really am this petty).

perhaps people come and sit after posting a letter?

That wall is crying out for railings, were there some originally? Odd to include the pillars otherwise.

Bobbins36 · 22/05/2022 18:31

@Bottomsonwalls your wall is a lovely wall. And it’s yours, no one else’s so I would crack on buying the automated garden gnome which tells anyone whose wall it isn’t to fuck the fuck off 😘

Bottomsonwalls · 22/05/2022 18:36

no there weren’t - we had the wall totally redone. My understanding was the laurels would sit ON the wall but they are baby laurels so I suppose that will take a few years!

OP posts:
Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 22/05/2022 18:46

I would put railings on it. If people keep sitting on it the laurel probably won't have a chance to grow over it, although as they get thicker you probably won't see people as much.
