Asking posters NOT to quote the OP's thread in their reply?

HarryDresdensLeatherDuster · 15/05/2022 23:08

I am not the first to ask so please just stop it people!

It slows a thread down and I cannot understand why you would do it. It's not like nobody has read the original!

OP posts:
PuppyMonkey · 16/05/2022 07:32

I don’t think you can stop people doing it, but I’ll admit when I see it, I tend to scroll past that post because I know the person doing it probably hasn’t read the entire thread and is going to make a pretty banal point that’s already been made 5 million times.Wink

Abraxan · 16/05/2022 07:42

This seems much worse in the app, than on my desktop.
After quotes there seems to be no spacing or paragraphs so the quote runs into the response, making it hard to pick out.

Infact the app is now almost unusable. The quote feature above doesn't work well, half of the responses seem to cut off mid sentence and there are no no paragraphs in a repulse half the time.

Really really old people?

Like in their 90s?

Shinyandnew1 · 16/05/2022 07:52

I can’t say that bothers me.

It does annoy me when people post on a thread about 100 posts in, Yes-I totally agree’ or ‘I can’t believe how wrong some of the posts on here are!’ or, ‘no, that’s not right’ WITHOUT quoting exactly who they are replying to!

What is a ‘thrrad’ ?

Minesril · 16/05/2022 08:51

It is a bit irritating, but I find it more annoying when people reply to someone else in the thread without quoting them. Especially when it was many posts ago. I can't be arsed to scroll right on back to see what this person said so your comment is meaningless!

Luculentus · 16/05/2022 09:06

Bunty55 · 15/05/2022 23:12

When posters do this it is because they are answering the OP directly and not the other posters. Nothing wrong with it IMHO

But you can do that very easily just be starting a post with "OP".

This drives me crazy too!

I usually quote the op, as then it's the reply direct to op.

Unless you @ another poster or quote another poster, why wouldn't you be answering the OP? That's a given......

I think I’ve made this awful error many times because I’m answering the op. But you’ve got me questioning myself that’s for sure. (That’s to the op).

britneyisfree · 16/05/2022 11:48

It's extra annoying now because there aren't any paragraphs. I suppose the good thing is I'm spending less time on threads as when people quote it's hard to read/ half of it gets cut off.

My screen time is way down Hmm

HistoricMoment · 16/05/2022 11:52

I think it's pointless too. Unless a poster quotes another post or directly refers to a poster who isn't the OP, I assume every post refers to the OP.

And I really, really hate nested quotes.

Momicrone · 16/05/2022 11:53

I got told off for using hashtags earlier, its funny what irritates people

How does it slow the thread?

Alright mumsnet police 😂

A580Hojas · 16/05/2022 11:57

I agree OP, immensely irritating! Talk about misuse of the quote function. Just WHY???

YouHaventDoneAnyWork · 16/05/2022 12:00

Nested quotes makes it much harder to read.

LindaEllen · 16/05/2022 12:06

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 15/05/2022 23:18

What annoys me more is people posting nested quotes .

Yeah, I completely agree.

Momicrone · 16/05/2022 12:53

Doesn't bother me in the least

You must have know this would happen 🤣

Whatalovelydaffodil · 16/05/2022 15:22

PickySlackTastic · 16/05/2022 00:12

Couldn't agree more.

Its nonsensical. By default, all posts are responding to the opening post.

It makes me cringe when people do it.

No, not all replies are to the OPs post.

NippyWoowoo · 16/05/2022 17:21

Hawkins001 · 15/05/2022 23:24

I usually quote the op, as then it's the reply direct to op.

But surely the assumption is you just reply is that you're replying to the OP? You can quote any subsequent replies

oioimatey · 16/05/2022 17:24

If I ever get a job at MNHQ I will immediately delete the button to quote the OP.

stuntbubbles · 16/05/2022 17:26

The nesting quotes is out of control, it looks like Tumblr and is impossible to read.

This example reduces the quoted text down to a word per line.

Whatalovelydaffodil · 16/05/2022 15:22

No, not all replies are to the OPs post.

Of course not all posts are replies to the OP. Hence the @ function and quote function. These two functions support the flow of a thread when it develops beyond responding to the first post. Its not needed if you are just responding to the first post.
