When posters do this it is because they are answering the OP directly and not the other posters. Nothing wrong with it IMHO

Completely pointless request. No amount of asking will stop people doing this. See this thread for proof!

Same with all sorts of "I wish people would......" online - you can wish endlessly, you can beg....... but they will carry on doing whatever it is.
Personal bugbear of mine - posting photos of something beautiful they have bought/made/cooked/knitted etc but not posting any details about how anyone else can recreate/purchase the awesome thing in the origonal photo.

I always take it that people are replying to OP, unless their post begins with a tag or a quote.

Surely then you don't quote if you're directly answering the OP.
If you are directly answering someone else then quote them to make it obvious.

I usually quote the op, as then it's the reply direct to op.

It doesn’t bother me. I just scroll on by - I suppose it slows me down by a split second, but MN is never something I’m speed reading like my life (or an under-revised exam result!) depends on 😀

I think it’s linked to my bugbear though… and a common one. People who don’t read all OP posts! I think that encourages quoting, as the quoter knows plenty of readers won’t have read the point they’re responding too!

Quoting subsequent OP posts often does make sense through, as the thread diverts along multiple paths!

How does it slow a thread down though - do you find you are compelled to read each quoted OP every time? Why not just scroll past, it takes a fraction of a second to do so..

I'm sure we all find different things slightly annoying like people dictating how others use MN but it's hardly worth starting a thread about.

Public forum, you don't get to tell other posters what to do. You could tell
man to sort this quote problem out though!

At the moment, due to the other bug, their answer is often chopped off. So all we can see is the quote and a few words of the comment. Very annoying!

Funnily enough, I thought about starting a similar thread this weekend. Didn't because I realized the futility of it, but it's driving me nuts atm.

There seem to be a lot of looooong posts that are quoted as well, so it's especially annoying.

And particularly when the quoter then just writes something really inane like "all the best OP".

There's one particular poster who I've noticed does this a LOT and I just hate on them. They're probably perfectly nice, but I hate them!
