Asking posters NOT to quote the OP's thread in their reply?

HarryDresdensLeatherDuster · 15/05/2022 23:08

I am not the first to ask so please just stop it people!

It slows a thread down and I cannot understand why you would do it. It's not like nobody has read the original!

OP posts:

When posters do this it is because they are answering the OP directly and not the other posters. Nothing wrong with it IMHO

Yes, it's this. In a fast moving thread it's to make clear you are responding to the OP rather than the poster above your post.

PickySlackTastic · 16/05/2022 00:12

Couldn't agree more.

Its nonsensical. By default, all posts are responding to the opening post.

It makes me cringe when people do it.

How come your posts aren't blue for me like other MN staff''s posts?

Ha!

GirlCrushxxx · 16/05/2022 00:17

Sorry if it annoys you but people post as they see fit! Millions use this site....nobody is going to change posting style for you!

Grumpypaws · 16/05/2022 00:23

Well I’m the odd one out here then because I reallly like the new quoting and nested quotes feature. Beats scrolling up and down keeping track of who is being replied to and what they said in their last post. Vast improvement IMHO!

TigerLilyTail · 16/05/2022 00:41

I agree that’s it’s annoying. If you are replying directly to the OP, just say something like “OP, I agree with you”. It seems a bit self-important to quote the entire OP.

CorsicaDreaming · 16/05/2022 00:45

I agree @HarryDresdensLeatherDuster - especially when the initial quote is extra long (and extra annoying) like the thread today about judging your "friend's" untidy house. It was annoying enough to read first time, I really don't need to see it again.

phishy · 16/05/2022 02:30

Nestled posts are great, I no longer have to bold (embolden?) the OP’s post and then italicise responses, and then put in my own response. Total time saver. Result.

I like it too @Grumpypaws for the exact reason that I can talk to you like this without doing a long winded copy and paste, bold etc, a chat within a chat. I mean, there is so much dross and repetition within threads that it suits me to skim over the crap and talk to the posters who have something to say

MN is just catching up with all other websites.

True, I do wish you could quote just parts of the posts though

GayParis · 16/05/2022 05:11

I'm on the mobile app and possibly extremely slow on the uptake but have quote responses changed? Half the time I can't see someone's full reply as it seems to cut off a lot of a quoted reply?

And they look different... maybe it's just my mobile app being weird?!

Cringe away then. People will do what they want.

RingRingRed · 16/05/2022 06:03

I hate it too OP! It's like the OP is who you're meant to be responding to! Only fecking quote when it's NOT the OP you're answering 🙄

Sadly, they are not necessarily quoting the first post, rather responding to a post tangentially related to OP, like here.
Wasn't going to respond to OP as I don't care enough about topic, although I would say a) having the OP quoted in topics wih numerous threads is helpful, esp if you want to respond to a certain points, and b) don't try to ban stuff!

It’s hard to see who wrote what.
You have to follow the lines.

Copy/paste/highlight is better isn’t it?

RoseGoldEagle · 16/05/2022 06:52

I hate it too! it makes reading threads more clunky for me. It’s the same as a book I’m reading on my kindle- every page has a ‘quote’ which is basically a snippet of text that is coming up in the next few paragraphs- it drives me mad! I am literally about to read it anyway, I’m reading the book, it just stops my flow every time! This gives me that same stop/start feel of- oh I’ve already read that, and that- yes I could skim or skip it but it’s like my brain is reading it before I can help it!

TigerLilyTail · 16/05/2022 07:05

I remember when MN was asking for donations, I was really shocked at how many employees they have, especially in the tech department, because I really feel the average 14-year-old could design a more user-friendly interface than Mumsnet. No offense!

To those who quote the entire OP in their post, can you not see how annoying that would be if everyone did it? It’s really not necessary to do it.

PrawnToast5 · 16/05/2022 07:06

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 15/05/2022 23:18

What annoys me more is people posting nested quotes .

Yeah, it's mumsnet not 2011 tumblr

ShowOfHands · 16/05/2022 07:16

It is immensely irritating and the people who do it the most aren't doing it to show they're replying to the op because they do it even when they're the first responder. One of them the other day, quoted a six paragraph op with the sole response of "I agree". I really wanted to ask them wtf they were doing it for but you just have to let it go.

We all assume you're replying to the op unless otherwise stated. But then I suppose at the other end of the spectrum, are the people who read only the op on a 672 post thread and just reply to that. It's all bad forum etiquette and you won't change it.

PickySlackTastic · 16/05/2022 07:20

Choufleurfromage · 16/05/2022 06:40

The OPs point (which I strongly agree with) is that quoting the opening post is redundant.

The quote feature and the functionality and legibility of it has much improved with recent site update. I also like the nested posts.

But the fact remains that quoting the first post is just strange. There is no need.
