For a country which is apparently hated! I don't usually care much for Eurovision, but enjoyed it this year!

The first time I’ve watched it for decades

basically forced into it by ds1 and boyfriend

but very pleased with the result

I’ll admit my jaw hit the floor when serbia whipped past us

5foot5 · 15/05/2022 00:15

Unbelievable!!
Second to Ukraine under current circumstances is amazing.
Do you think they will ask us to host?

Sometimeswinning · 15/05/2022 00:18

I did like Serbia! I was also forced by dh and ds10. But given the obsession that everyone hates us (mainly the England part) It's been a win in my mind!

BlackboardMonitorVimes · 15/05/2022 00:19

We are not hated. Really we are not.

Preschoolerhelp · 15/05/2022 00:20

hopefully we can offer to host!

Merryoldgoat · 15/05/2022 00:21

It’s shocking what happens when they choose someone popular to represent us.

It’s the first time in years I can remember thinking our entrant was actually good.

worraliberty · 15/05/2022 00:24

Huh? Since when does 'everyone' hate us?

I watched a bit of it OP and I think Sam did amazingly and you're right, given the war in Ukraine, coming second was a fantastic achievement.

gabsdot45 · 15/05/2022 00:26

Well done to UK. Great song. I bet UK will host next year. Coming Second to Ukraine this year will always be remembered.

I have really enjoyed Eurovision this year even though Ireland didn't get to the final. I watched both Semis and there were some really good songs and performances but the voting tonight was something else. The drama, suspense, excitement. I love it.

StressedSandwich · 15/05/2022 00:26

Im so pleased that Sam done well, second place is amazing!! I reckon we will host next year as I doubt Ukraine will be in a position to.

PrettyMaybug · 15/05/2022 00:26

Well done UK!!! And yep, this does prove we are not loathed by Europe, like the far left wokies like to think! So pleased with this result!

Vegansausageroll · 15/05/2022 00:28

We were probably punished over the Brexit vote for a few years (deservedly)!
But deep down the rest of Europe doesn’t hate the UK.
France even gave us 12 points despite everything!
Tonight was a small ray of positivity in an exceptionally dark time in Europe.

The only year we could have won and we lost to a sympathy vote.

Wow sour grapes or what!!
Not a sympathy vote but a show of solidarity and support. Plus it was a good Eurovision song.

stillawakeat4amagain · 15/05/2022 00:35

It's very clear that we did so well because of our countries open support of Ukraine, not taking anything away from Sam but we all know the talent and song aren't the deciding factors for EVs outcome. Great night, fun watching and it clearly shows where the EU stand.

I know right, fancy anyone even giving a thought to the fact that the performers have had to prepare for this performance while also dealing with their country being attacked, families being evacuated, split apart, forced to fight in a war or heck, even killed. I mean why would anyone ever let little things like that potentially bias their voting in a deadly serious and very important song competition.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 15/05/2022 00:37

Great result.

worraliberty · 15/05/2022 00:43

I think this could be better for Sam Ryder's career than actually winning.

As much as we all want to win Eurovision, there's a big element of 'cheese' about it, so coming second will probably make him 'cooler' and preserve any street cred he might have 😂😂

There is no deserved punishment for daring to leave the Eu! Comments like this breed the idea of hate. I can understand countries being put out but that's it.

The 12 points from Ukraine meant alot. Especially after all the posts regarding people in the United Kingdom helping out.

ThettaReddast · 15/05/2022 00:52

The Ukrainian entry is a great Eurovision song and would’ve done well regardless, maybe not the same winning margin, but it certainly would’ve been a contender.

‘Political’ voting is much less of a thing at Eurovision these days than people like to believe, particularly with the jury votes and semi finals, and rarely has an impact on the actual result. The UK isn’t universally ‘hated’, we’ve just done poorly generally because we’ve had poor entries.

I’m far too invested in this (and too wired to sleeep) apparently if the winning country can’t host then one of the big 5 contributors are asked to. Spain have offered in the event of a Ukrainian win but it’s got to be us now surely?!

Zelensky talks about “one day” hosting - surely they’ve not got the infrastructure

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 15/05/2022 01:07

We watched it tonight and coming 2nd felt like a win, well done Ukraine. The most astonishing thing was France giving us 12 points.

ilovesooty · 15/05/2022 01:12

BlackboardMonitorVimes · 15/05/2022 00:19

We are not hated. Really we are not.

Agreed. We've previously been sending low quality, poorly researched and marketed songs.

acatcalledjohn · 15/05/2022 01:35

Do remember that we only got 100 and something points from the viewing public. The rest was jury votes. We're not that loved.

That said, great result.

Moldova deserved more though. As did Azerbaijan.

InglouriousBasterd · 15/05/2022 01:46

183 televote points - that’s pretty respectable and on par with the others. A lot higher than many.

minmooch · 15/05/2022 01:52

Loved every minute of tonight's show - the shit songs, the cheesy songs, the great songs, terrible comperes, great show from Mikka. Sam Ryder was awesome. We all knew Ukraine was going to win but Sam won the real votes.

Don't usually watch it but what a spectacle tonight.
