AIBU to think that this is just a sprain?

I fell down a step or two at work and fell on my foot. My colleagues say I should get it checked and so does my family.

However, I think it's just a sprain from the trauma of falling on it and that I don't need to go to hospital.

Anyone had anything similar?

It has swollen a bit more than when it first happened and it does hurt to walk on it, but I'm not crying or anything

I walked on a broken ankle for a week!

user0512 · 13/05/2022 14:52

Did it look like this?

Oooft that is nasty swelling. Have you RICE'd it?

user0512 · 13/05/2022 15:00

I have put two ice packs. Does it look like a sprain?

That is how mine swelled when I broke the bone running down into my little toe about half way down my foot - it was like an egg out the side of the foot where the break was.

user0512 · 13/05/2022 15:02

Wouldn't a sprain cause swelling too? I just don't want to waste time at A&E

CornishPorsche · 13/05/2022 15:06

Just go to A&E. The longer you wait, the worse your foot will be. Only a medic examining you can decide whether an xray is needed. A photo doesn't do that.

JollyWilloughby · 13/05/2022 15:06

if I’m not in that much pain I never go to A and E.

It is probably a sprain

flashpaper · 13/05/2022 15:08

Check where your local urgent care centre is and see if they have X-ray facilities. It'll save time for you because the wait time will probably be less than a&e anyway.

I walked on a broken leg for a week because I thought it was “just a knock and a bruise”. Nope, a clean fracture.

Get it checked out OP.

No. I’d broken the top of my fibula. It looked fine on the outside for the first few days, it ached though. But after a few days I developed a massive bruise which turned a dark purple colour.

Honestly, it’s better to be safe than sorry getting it checked out. Even if it’s only a sprain the hospital will advise you what to do.

milkyaqua · 13/05/2022 15:38

Get it checked out. Really.

BarbedButterfly · 13/05/2022 15:52

My foot did look similar to that when I broke it, yes

ChristmasFluff · 13/05/2022 16:07

I was a physio, and you have probably broken a small bone in your foot, or severely sprained a ligament. Personally, I'd strap it up/tubigrip it and carry on - because I hate hospitals and medical intervention. But I am an utter twat. Go to A&E/walk in centre.

Would you rather go to A&E and it turn out to be nothing, or not go to A&E and it turns out to be a fracture? It might be a sprain, but equally it might not. There's only one way to know.

MrOllivander · 13/05/2022 16:15

I had no swelling or bruising

user0512 · 13/05/2022 16:20

Thanks all. Sorry for being a pain. Does it look any better? ive rested it and put an ice pack. If it doesn't. I'll get it seen to.

Having had some serious sprains, I'd be getting that one x-rayed.

Chouetted · 13/05/2022 16:22

Get it checked. You won't be wasting their time - it's difficult to tell from just looking, and it's not exactly a time intensive thing to check. They'll certainly want to examine it, probably x-ray it, and you'll mostly just be sitting around waiting for one or the other to happen.

I had a friend who walked on a broken foot for three weeks... it still bothers her now

bloodywhitecat · 13/05/2022 16:22

Nobody can tell from a couple of photos whether it is a sprain or a break unless those photos are taken by an x-ray machine.

StopGo · 13/05/2022 16:24

This is an injury at work. You need to get it seen so you can update the accident book. Don't ignore it.

FlissyPaps · 13/05/2022 16:24

@user0512 Don’t say sorry!!💐

IMO, I can’t tell much difference in size, but it might just be the lighting. Keep it elevated and keep the ice on.

If there’s no improvement by tomorrow I’d get it checked.
