AIBU to think that this is just a sprain?

I fell down a step or two at work and fell on my foot. My colleagues say I should get it checked and so does my family.

However, I think it's just a sprain from the trauma of falling on it and that I don't need to go to hospital.

Anyone had anything similar?

It has swollen a bit more than when it first happened and it does hurt to walk on it, but I'm not crying or anything

You may be given crutches, even for a sprain.

My son recently sprained his ankle and was on crutches for 6 weeks.

Good luck

I'd lay money on that being a break.

Yep, me too.
Hope you feel better soon.

Lougle · 13/05/2022 19:27

Glad you're at A&E.

iklboo · 13/05/2022 19:29

I was strapped up rather than put in plaster and on crutches for about 6 weeks. Then I had physio for another 8 weeks. It's still a bit weak & aches like a bugger when it's raining. Sending healing vibes!

Still waiting to be seen. My swelling has actually gone down a bit. Surely that's a good sign? 😄

user0512 · 13/05/2022 22:02

Thanks everyone. Still waiting for the x-Ray 😳

@1DoesNotSimplyWalkIntoMordor yes the whole foot was swollen and bruised, top and bottom Unfortunately due to it happening a week before the first lockdown in 2020, I didn't feel I could go back to A&E and physios were shut.
I did see my GP literally the day before lockdown, who said to rest it as x-ray came back showing no break.
In hindsight, it was worse than I thought, but bad sprains are a bit of a bugger. I couldn't walk unaided for a couple of months, just really bad timing!
I did mine during a combat class at the gym, the studio floor was slippery as the ventilation was a bit rubbish. Haven't been back since, still holding a massive grudge 😤

supperlover · 13/05/2022 23:34

I'm a nurse but when I fell and hurt my ankle I thought it was just a sprain but did go to A&E just in case as know you can only be sure if x rayed. It was a fracture.

Did it look similar to mine? I'm
Still waiting to be seen 😩

The swelling is too far away from your ankle to be a sprained ankle -as others have said, it's over the end of your metatarsals & it's v likely there's a fracture.

It's pants that you've got caught in a busy time at A&E, but do stay to get properly seen & treated (as a former A&E nurse I guarantee no one will be eye rolling/wondering why you're there!) x

Notimeforaname · 13/05/2022 23:50

That's going to be a gnarly bruise! Hoping it's not broken op! And hope you're seen to soon!

converseandjeans · 13/05/2022 23:50

That looks like a fractured metatarsal to me.

FlissyPaps · 13/05/2022 23:54

Hope you’re not too bored OP, waiting round in hospitals for hours is the absolute worst!!

Whatever the outcome hope it heals quick for you.

user0512 · 13/05/2022 23:55

I've been bored out of my brains. I've been tempted to go home so many times but I do understand that I should get it seen to. I've not even seen a doc yet and I'm still yet to have the x Ray etc

OP posts:
Fran456 · 14/05/2022 00:26

Nobody on here can tell if it's broken or sprained from a photo.
You'd need an X-Ray.
Go to A+E (it's not time wasting, most have minor injuries attached), or an urgent care if you have one in your area.

Fran456 · 14/05/2022 00:26

Oops, just seen your update! Hope your out soon.

milkyaqua · 14/05/2022 00:39

I had what I self-diagnosed via the internet as a high ankle sprain. I suspect it was multiple torn ligaments and god knows what else. Limped badly for six months, and ended up with that calf half the size of the other and then over the following years a series of injuries to the left side requiring medical treatment and physio that I think may have been partially caused by over-compensating. The last injury I had I went to the hospital as I should have done when I "sprained" my right ankle; ended up waiting for five hours to get seen an x-rayed. Still glad I waited! Got diagnosed and treated and healed fairly swiftly then.

Aww glad you eventually healed! I've had my x-ray. Just waiting on the results now. What treatment did they suggest for a sprain? Just physio, OTC painkillers and rest? i finding it so difficult to walk!

@user0512 glad you're finally making progress.

I've had many sprains, I'm clumsy and visually impaired which is not a good combo 😂

If it is a sprain they'll give you exercises or direct you to google them, do them! I've always found that the first few steps after keeping my ankle still for a while are agony because the muscle stiffens. It's usually things like rotating your ankle gently or pointing your toes, just very gentle movements.

SeaToSki · 14/05/2022 00:54

I have broken a metatarsal 3 times. They almost always looked like that. They might offer you a removable cast/splint. Bite their hand off for it, and if they dont, ask them for one. Otherwise wear a shoe with an absolutely rigid and flat sole, you dont want your foot to flex in any direction if at all possible.

it takes about 6 weeks to heal and is a pain in the arse. Drink lots of milk and take vit d pills, its meant to help. Ibuprofen will help with the pain and swelling

user0512 · 14/05/2022 01:46

I'm back home now. The radiographer and doctor were split on opinion. Radiographer thinks there's a small fracture. Doctor thinks it's a sprain. I've been given the boot and crutches. He said it'll take six weeks to heal. Kind of feel like o wasted their time but crutches are helping take weight off the foot

OP posts:
milkyaqua · 14/05/2022 01:50

You haven't wasted anyone's time. The boot will help. Ditto crutches. Wish I'd gone and gotten those... Follow their instructions and rest up the poor foot!

Haus1234 · 14/05/2022 02:07

You didn’t waste their time, and the boot and crutches will help you heal better. Well done for going and not leaving your health to fate Star
