Just been listening to a programme on the radio about finance and 3% rise in benefits. The programme explained that there is generally an 8% rise on costs of living. There was a food club charity who collect and redistribute near to the sell by date food for a very discipline saying that they're having to turn people away. Then a woman came on saying that she is feeding herself 4 children and husband on £1900.00 a month which although sounds like a large sum when it's got to feed, clothe etc six people it isn't a lot. The woman said that she has to ration fruit, has to get her children to put their pyjamas on when they get home as they can't afford wear and tear on their clothes. She hasn't hated he house so the family can eat!
It sounds nightmarish I just feel like what the heck is his county doing to people when they are having to live like this. Sorry for the rant but feel free to contribute to my rantings.
I predict a riot!

If that is £1900 after bills?

SleeplessInEngland · 11/04/2022 13:38

I doubt it - our stiff upper lip runs perversely deep - but if the tories win the next election then we might as well coronate them at this point.

HappyDays40 · 11/04/2022 13:39

No including all bills

How can that woman riot when she has 4 kids to look after?

I haven't experienced this in my lifetime but aren't riots usually started by men?In the past, men were the sole breadwinners so they felt it keenly if they couldn't provide. It would be a huge bruise to their ego. these days, women seem to be holding the fort on their own. Poorer families are disproportionately single parent families and the head of the family is almost always a woman.

HappyDays40 · 11/04/2022 13:40

And her rent payments, it barely enough.

Inflation is supposed to hit 12% by the end of the year.

HappyDays40 · 11/04/2022 13:42

I didn't mean her rioting personally I mean the British public getting sick of living hand to mouth

I genuinely feel like if we're sick enough of living this way, we will take that to the polls and vote the absolute shower of shite running the country to kingdom come.

C25kBecky · 11/04/2022 13:45

I think we need to riot. Otherwise they will continue to take the piss out of us. It's been long overdue imo.

I don't think I understand your point at all? She can't riot because she isn't the head of the household?
FourTeaFallOut · 11/04/2022 13:46

I don't think so. We live in a country in which people are more likely to be ashamed to be poor than angry about it.

StrangeAddiction · 11/04/2022 13:48

I saw Martin Lewis (money saving expert) reckons that this is the case. I'm not too sure myself. Maybe when things start to really cut deep a few months down the line into winter. The thing with civil unrest and rioting is that the rioters seem to target their peers who are also struggling. I rent the London riots and the family owned furniture store being set on fire or the Black Lives Matter riots when the shops were being looted and they were taking from small family owned businesses who were owned by black people!

MaryAndHerNet · 11/04/2022 13:49

Less than £1000 for me and my.DD a month.

£450 of that goes on rent
£45 on council tax

Doesn't leave much for heat, so I don't have it on.
Doesn't leave much for treats, so we don't have any.
Doesn't leave much for days out, so we don't have any..

Anyone that says life on Universal Credit is cushy can go fuck themselves.

Newrumpus · 11/04/2022 13:50

Rioting is a self-destructive act that damages the communities least able to recover from their losses. It is not just a convenient way to by-pass the electoral system.

AlternativePerspective · 11/04/2022 13:50

There seem to be numerous threads suggesting that we should be/will soon be/should expect riots. So why aren’t those posters out in the street rioting then?

desiringonlychild2022 · 11/04/2022 13:50

@SliceOfCakeCupOfTea my point was that women don't tend to riot as they have childcare responsibilities. Its men who are more impulsive but i think nowadays a lot of poor men are not shouldering the full financial responsibility of their children.

FourTeaFallOut · 11/04/2022 13:50

I'm not sure he did say that, he said that food and fuel poverty are conditions which can lead to civil disobedience, it was tinkering by media outlets with his wording which made it sound like he said we are on the brink of civil unrest

Nightlystroll · 11/04/2022 13:51

Why do you want riots? How will doing damage that has to be paid for and so will put up costs help anyone?

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 11/04/2022 13:51

I am baffled at what it might take for people to say enough is enough in this country. We seem to have turned into a nation of Thatcherites in which any deprivation you suffer is your own fault and you shouldn't expect anything from the government unless you are already rich.
FayCarew · 11/04/2022 13:52

I heard it and although I sympathise, I did wonder why they were so cold. I'd be cold wandering about the house in my pyjamas.

I'd need to see what they are spending on other things.

StopFeckingFaffing · 11/04/2022 13:53

I'm not denying it isn't a depressing situation but what will rioting achieve?

HappyDays40 · 11/04/2022 13:59

Never said I wanted riots, just that I feel it will happen.

No including all bills
What's the income from and what's the expenditure?
Fedupbuyer · 11/04/2022 14:15

Well I’m sick of being cold already so count me in!
