To miss genuine veggie food

In the light of all the vegan options coming out, what's happened to veggie food? Granted veggies can eat vegan but I want real cheese or mayo on my burger instead of the fake stuff.

Not even allowed to add a coffee to a 'vegan' meal at burger king, I assume because of the milk. Had to pay separately.

Just having a moan. It's annoying as hell. Anyone else?

It’s annoying isn’t it? If I look at one more cauliflower dish on a menu as the sole meat free option I’ll cry. Disgusting beasts, cauliflowers.

Paperyfish · 10/04/2022 18:12

Yes! A few years back a basic restaurant might have 10 meat fish choices for mains and 2 veggie options. Now they have 10 meat fish options and 1 veggie and 1 vegan ( or 2 vegan)

Paperyfish · 10/04/2022 18:13

I don’t begrudge the vegans - just, couldn’t they have let go a meat fish option? The profit margin on vegan dinners must be insane!

CapitanSandy · 10/04/2022 18:16

Every menu seems to be cauliflower or fake meat burgers. Gross when you don’t like the texture or taste of meat. Bring back proper veggie food!

IdiotIntrusion · 10/04/2022 18:16

Cauliflower isn't too bad if it's cauliflower cheese... But guess what - no cheese!!!

Mushrooms do it for me. Slimy little bastards.

I miss the days of halloumi as a veggie option 😢

I don’t eat meat but love cheese. It’s so disheartening that there are so many places who serve real cheese with the meat options but only vegan ‘cheese’ with any vege options. Just make cheese an extra option and allow people to choose whether they’d like the vegan cheese or not.

ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave · 10/04/2022 18:17

You don't need cheese or mayo to make a "genuine" meal. What a weird choice of words.

AnnaSW1 · 10/04/2022 18:18

Being vegetarian has gone back 20 years. There's rarely a vegetarian menu now - just a vegan one. I don't t want to eat fake cheese on a vegan burger. I want a veggie burger with actual cheese and actual Mayo. It's infuriating. Plus I'm veggie because I hate the taste and texture of meat but now the only portion seems to be vegan fake meat. It makes me so mad. I keep wondering if it's mainly a London thing

Paperyfish · 10/04/2022 18:18

Maybe with the 90’s revival we’ll get sun dried tomato and goat cheese tarts back! Liked those!

DietOrDie · 10/04/2022 18:19

YANBU

I'm forever asking for the dairy cheese on my pizza.

On the plus side it has been a while since I last saw a veggie lasagna as the sole option on a menu so at least they've become a bit more inventive

Amrapaali · 10/04/2022 18:19

YADNBU! I'm supposed to go out to a fancy restaurant with a group. The menu had only two meatless options- both vegan.

Honestly I refuse to eat food where half the words used to describe the dish are in quotation marks- " Not bacon" in a vegan bun with "feta" and "parmesan"

Truly scary frankenfood

MaChienEstUnDick · 10/04/2022 18:24

Hahaha DSis is that you?

She's had this rant so many times I bought her a new cheese grater for Christmas as her family secret Santa.

toastofthetown · 10/04/2022 18:27

I feel like the only vegetarian on Mumsnet who is happy to eat vegan food. I don't like vegan cheese, but I don't like fake meat options in vegetarian food either. And to be honest, if I see fake meat and cheese on a menu, I'd probably avoid the whole restaurant because it's probably not the kind of restaurant I'd want to eat in. And for me, the kind of place whose only vegetarian/vegan option contains animal product substitutes probably was only replacing a bland risotto or goats cheese tart anyway - hardly a culinary loss. But dals, dosas, berenjenas fritas, avocado maki, miso glazed aubergine, samosa chaat, black bean taquitos, breaded tofu bibimbap are examples of food that I've eaten in restaurants recently that are delicious, full of flavour and naturally vegan. And those restaurants also had plenty of other vegetarian but not vegan options.

Pizza Express has made my favourite vegetarian vegan - i.e, with vegan mozzarella, which I hate. Last time I went, I asked them to swap it for normal mozzarella but instead got a pizza with no cheese. We had waited for ages, so I just ate it rather than complain/send it back but it wasn’t very nice!

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 10/04/2022 18:28

It's often harder to eat vegetarian now for me as all the vegan stuff has other stuff in like wheat that I can't eat. It feels far less healthy.

IdiotIntrusion · 10/04/2022 18:30

I'm by no means saying that makes it a genuine meal. Just saying I miss genuine veggie food - aka veggie food that is precisely that; no meat but dairy included.

It's like saying meat eaters should be happy with meat substitutes to appease the veggies. You just wouldn't do it 🤷‍♀️

Vegan stuff has lots of nuts and coconut in it.

As a vegetarian, the rise of vegan food is reducing the amount of food I can eat.

You're so right; not all vegetarians can eat vegan food. It winds me up that so many people are lumping veggie and vegan into the same category.

MissedThe · 10/04/2022 18:32

It is the movement towards “fake” vegan food that I don’t like too. I sometimes cook vegan food at home but because it’s a nice recipe that doesn’t happen to contain dairy rather than including meat/dairy substitutes.

Not your DSis but I will be if you get me a new cheese grater 😂 (complete with an assortment of non-vegan cheese)

I'm with you on that. If I wanted to eat bacon, I'd eat real bacon. I don't. I want to eat veggies.

Meat substitutes are for people who don't actually want to eat vegetarian food, IMHO.

Roominmyhouse · 10/04/2022 18:35

I agree. I’m not veggie but often used to have the veggie option eating out. Because it still had normal cheese etc. I don’t really rate vegan cheese and find the vegan options just aren’t always as good. It’s a shame places can make the non-meat option available as both veggie and vegan rather than just vegan!

TabithaTittlemouse · 10/04/2022 18:35

There’s a long thread on here on this subject a few weeks ago

IdiotIntrusion · 10/04/2022 18:36

Dominoes have started doing a vegan pepperoni pizza... You can't swap the vegan cheese out for normal mozzarella and you can't create your own and add the pepperoni.

Why is life cruel 😢

I say we start a revolution.

I'm gluten free and a lot of venues for work events, just have one 'dietary needs' dish, so it's vegan and gluten free. In other words a very sad salad and a few roasted veggies that are cold
