To miss genuine veggie food

In the light of all the vegan options coming out, what's happened to veggie food? Granted veggies can eat vegan but I want real cheese or mayo on my burger instead of the fake stuff.

Not even allowed to add a coffee to a 'vegan' meal at burger king, I assume because of the milk. Had to pay separately.

Just having a moan. It's annoying as hell. Anyone else?

Yes, this drives me mad. I used to choose the vegetarian option on menus quite often but now I am much more likely to order something with meat or fish, as it's so much nicer than the "cheeze"-heavy vegan meals which are all that is available at many places now.

The nice vegetarian cafe locally has gone vegan, so no milk in coffee and no butter with bread and veggie soup. So I don't go there any more.

Carpy88999 · 10/04/2022 18:40

@IdiotIntrusion

Dominoes have started doing a vegan pepperoni pizza... You can't swap the vegan cheese out for normal mozzarella and you can't create your own and add the pepperoni.

Why is life cruel 😢

I say we start a revolution.

If you're ordering online you can't same as if you use the self service machines at burger King. Just talk to someone and I'm sure they will do it.

Sunday dinners annoy me . You go to a place for food , they offer meat waters a choice of 3 different meats and then all the trimmings of a good roast . Vegetarian option , veggie sausages , mash and peas, or a Chickpea & spinach curry & rice. I want a vegetarian roast !

Flawedless · 10/04/2022 18:41

Yep, with you on this. Youngest daughter doesn't eat meat. She doesn't like the taste so she also doesn't eat fake meat of any kind. It is getting harder to find options on a European menu that aren't fake meat of some description. She does like beans and lentils so at home I use those instead of meat. I wish there were more options out and about.

EatsQuorn · 10/04/2022 18:42

waters = eaters , typo.

It’s annoying isn’t it? If I look at one more cauliflower dish on a menu as the sole meat free option I’ll cry. Disgusting beasts, cauliflowers.
🤣 I feel the same lol

“Dominoes have started doing a vegan pepperoni pizza... You can't swap the vegan cheese out for normal mozzarella and you can't create your own and add the pepperoni.”Hmm why are you ordering vegan versions when you want meat and cheese. I’d say that’s your problem!

Horcruxe · 10/04/2022 18:42

YANBU.

when I go for the veghie/ vegan option,.I want veggies or proper food.

Not plastic/ fake meat with loads of god know what dished up.

Vegan should mean vegetables/ lentils, not a plastic creation dreamt up in a lab somewhere

VelvetChairGirl · 10/04/2022 18:42

as someone who is lactose intolerant I LOVE it, I've even been able to buy frozen pizza.

DragonMovie · 10/04/2022 18:43

Not veggie or vegan but love veggie food. I can’t stand seeing things described as “plant based”. It sounds gross and artificial. Why can’t you say what the plant in question is?? I wouldn’t eat something described as meat based.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 10/04/2022 18:43

Agree, I find this really frustrating. I was at a pub recently where food had to be ordered on the app, I was ordering everybody a burger. I could add extra cheese to the meat burgers but when I ordered the vegan burger (the only meat-free option) I could only add fake cheese, there was no option on the app to add real cheese, plus the fake cheese was more expensive to add than the real thing. I’m not vegan and whilst it is great that there are plant-based options for those who are on most menus it is frustrating when it is the only option on a menu which has customisation options.

JustDanceAddict · 10/04/2022 18:44

Totally agree. There have been so many threads in this. Nice vegetarian restaurants going wholly vegan and other restaurants having only vegan burgers w fake cheese or no proper veggie option w dairy products.
I mainly eat vegetarian and sometimes fish (although not that keen on it), but I have occasionally eaten meat in restaurants where I’d prefer to eat a good veggie option.

MsJinks · 10/04/2022 18:45

Free from meat/animal products now stuck in shelves/fridges with free from gluten and/or dairy as well - it’s annoying and confusing. Coeliac has to be quite careful with meat subs as gluten is often put in for the taste.
But actually I get your pain as I am sad a lot of free from gluten is also free from dairy and I love dairy - guess there isn’t always enough call for specific feee froms.
I have noticed that now vegan is ‘popular’ there is slightly less gluten free available in restaurants and shops as that ‘trend’ has passed. One thing that always infuriates me though is restaurants or cafes having gluten free but not being able to assuredly keep it free from cross contamination so can’t eat it anyway - I wonder who wants gluten free stuff but doesn’t need to have it as it’s not great being full of other stuff, often higher in sugar and more expensive 🤷🏼‍♀️

KittenKong · 10/04/2022 18:45

I’m finding ‘vegans’ are part timers who will happily eat fake meat or ready made foods rather than ye olde vegans who would cook from scratch and never set foot in a McDonalds.

The vegan alternatives or options often have something in there that makes me feel sick. I suspect it’s something that binds the ingredients and any fake mayo/cream just coats the mouth and leaves an aftertaste. Vegan ‘cheese’ is revolting.

I’ve been a veggie for almost 40 years now so have seen it go from ‘the cheese salad years’ (when you’d pick the cheese out because they never knew if it was veggie or not) to ‘oh my god there’s 2+ choices on the menu!’ to ‘meat, meat, meat, fish, offal…vegan’ on the menu.

It’s got worse for vegetarians and not much for real vegans (who don’t especially want to eat burgers that look like bloody roadkill).

I'm another that doesn't mind vegan, although I don't really want meat or cheese substitutes. And I love cauliflower.

But in a mass market family restaurant, the only option was cauliflower steak for £12. Sides extra. Shock For a bit of cauli, shoved in the oven.

Suzi888 · 10/04/2022 18:46

“The nice vegetarian cafe locally has gone vegan, so no milk in coffee and no butter with bread and veggie soup. So I don't go there any more.”

I think your telling massive porkies. Haven’t they heard of plant butter? It tastes the same as regular butter and so does milk. DD loves meat. Always has. She will eat a blue steak- 🤢DH rare but neither can tell the difference when I’ve given them plant milk or butter.

justanoldhack · 10/04/2022 18:46

Hard agree. YANBU!

mudgetastic · 10/04/2022 18:47

I think most people can tell the difference

Your last sentence is pure nonsense. Majority of people aren't vegan for any other reason than they don't want to eat the rotting flesh of animals or the secretions they produce.

It has nothing to do with veg and some of those "plastic creations dreamt up in a lab" are actually really nice.

Flawedless · 10/04/2022 18:48

Cauliflower Steak can fuck off. Imagine if someone gave you a bowl of cauliflower as the main part of your meal? Why is it ok just because it's a slice? It's not a fucking protein.

IdiotIntrusion · 10/04/2022 18:49

The pepperoni pizza - I just got a lil excited over the thought of a pepperoni pizza as it's been about 15 years since I had one. Curiosity made me want to try it 🤷‍♀️

If I have to think of a positive... No more goats cheese and caramelised onion tarts at weddings?

Veggie food is supposed to be healthy not lab processed 'fake' stuff. What goes on to these fake cheeses and what processing is required in factories for it and is it better for consumption and the environment than real cheese?

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 10/04/2022 18:51

It annoys me too. Most if the time I will choose vegan anyway, but I hate vegan cheese with a passion. The real low for me was a basic pie and peas menu at a venue, when the vegetarian option ticked all of the vegan and gluten free boxes too, so we don't even get wheat pastry!

RomainingCalm · 10/04/2022 18:51

Completely agree. When I first stopped eating meat the only choices tended to be quiche or mushroom stroganoff. Then over the years the veggie choices improved considerably. Now it's all gone downhill again.

I don't want jackfruit. I don't want a cauliflower pretending to be a steak. I don't want vegan-not-cheese. Even the veggie chilli made with beans/lentils/vegetables seems to be increasingly replaced by a vegan meat substitute version.

I even find myself mourning the once ubiquitous goats cheese tart.

Snoopfroggyfrogg · 10/04/2022 18:53

Yep. I love a lot of dishes that are vegan (daal, a veggie bayanetu etc) but don't want to go out and eat fake meat, milk, or cheese.

Also I don't want sweet veg in everything with no thought to the balance of flavours. Butternut squash and sweet potato definitely have their place but they don't go with everything.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/04/2022 18:53

It's ridiculous if it's somewhere like Burger King or Dominos where they have the dairy versions available that they won't give people the choice.

It makes no difference to them if they sell dairy or vegan cheese on a burger or pizza and as the latter is probably more expensive, it will probably give them a bigger profit margin.

Plus there's loads of vegan meals that don't include weird processed vegan foods that seem to be so popular at the moment.

What's wrong with a bean burger like the old style BK one, a bean chilli, chick pea curry or mezze of hummus, falafels etc?

I suppose the only thing to do is for vegetarians to feed this back to the chains, after all, they always ask for feedback, so maybe if enough people reminded them of the existence of vegetarians who are happy to eat standard dairy products, they might listen?

SierraSapphire · 10/04/2022 18:53

Pizza Express has made my favourite vegetarian vegan - i.e, with vegan mozzarella, which I hate.

I was going to say this, and there's no way to swap it on the Deliveroo app.
