To miss genuine veggie food

310 replies

IdiotIntrusion · 10/04/2022 18:08

In the light of all the vegan options coming out, what's happened to veggie food? Granted veggies can eat vegan but I want real cheese or mayo on my burger instead of the fake stuff.

Not even allowed to add a coffee to a 'vegan' meal at burger king, I assume because of the milk. Had to pay separately.

Just having a moan. It's annoying as hell. Anyone else?

Completely agree with you. DH has been quietly veggie for 58 years, he really misses a cheese omelette when we are out and about. He recently asked for just the roast veg, stuffing and a Yorkshire pudding when we went out for Sunday lunch and this was apparantly not possible, so he had to have the beetroot risotto instead.

christmastreewithhairyfairy · 10/04/2022 19:13

Yanbu, this drives me mad! Seems to be more the case in south east, I was in glastonbury the other day (the town not the festival!) and they had a proper veggie cafe, with cheese on everything. None of those near where I live

@Carpy88999
I don’t like animal suffering.

DH does eat meat but worries about how the animals are raised and treated and pumped full of god knows what. He bought chicken awhile back and when he opened the packaging it was (hard to describe) didn’t look right. I don’t eat it so I don’t know. He threw it. Pays a fortune for what he hopes is “well raised” meat.

Close friend - doesn’t like putting dead things in her mouth. Not an animal lover and will happily wear and buy fur. Meat eaters/vegan haters very freaked out, as they have no argument/nowhere to go.

IdiotIntrusion · 10/04/2022 19:14

@BarbaraofSeville the spinach and ricotta cannelloni was always my go-to. Haven't seen it around for years...

Maybe it'll resurface as a vegan option soon

It depends where you go but I’ve found the vegan option are genuinely delicious! like you wouldn’t know it wasn’t real cheese. And tbh as I’m veggie for ethical reasons I feel like a hypocrite for being a dairy lover so it’s great Grin

Abraxan · 10/04/2022 19:15

@EatsQuorn

Sunday dinners annoy me . You go to a place for food , they offer meat waters a choice of 3 different meats and then all the trimmings of a good roast . Vegetarian option , veggie sausages , mash and peas, or a Chickpea & spinach curry & rice. I want a vegetarian roast !
I don't like the Vegetarian meat options, like Quorn etc. So I now opt for the Sunday roast but without the meat at our local pub. The veg, Yorkshire puddings and potatoes aren't cooked in animal fat and they will do me veggie gravy. So I prefer to crust choose to have the veg and trimmings. Had it today in fact.
Sexnotgender · 10/04/2022 19:15

YANBU at all. Drives me fucking crazy. I want cheese!

Suzi888 · 10/04/2022 19:15

He recently asked for just the roast veg, stuffing and a Yorkshire pudding when we went out for Sunday lunch.

And they said no? I doubt it. Unless you wanted it cheaper of course…

But animals don't just suffer to produce meat. All dairy cows and egg laying chickens end up at the same slaughterhouses for the same reason as their bred for meat cousins.

They get exploited and then killed so much more suffering.

toastofthetown · 10/04/2022 19:18

Exactly what's wrong with an actual veggie chilli with lots of nutritious veggies.

Why put make it vegan by putting fake "meat" into it.

A veggie chilli is delicious and you could easily make it vegan without adding fake meat.

I don't want a meat substitute.

But they aren't 'making it vegan' by adding a meat substitute. Every veggie chilli I've eaten or cooked as you describe was vegan in the first place. Vegan food doesn't requite meat substitutes and many vegetarians enjoy them (as evidenced by the popularity of Quorn, most of which isn't vegan). My own experience is that no good pub or restaurant I've been to serves meat substitutes for any dietary requirements and I would avoid eating there regardless if the dish I wanted had a meat or dairy alternative.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 10/04/2022 19:20

And on what grounds do you think this didn’t happen? As you can see from the rest of the thread, this isn’t an isolated issue. I don’t know why restaurants have to be so inflexible but it DOES happen. I’ve asked for a Christmas roast meal without the meat (because the non-meat option was something I didn’t like) and the restaurant acted as if I’d asked for special food to be prepared for me rather than “make the dish as normal but just don’t put the turkey and sausage on”.

Why would you want to believe otherwise?

Blackmagicqueen · 10/04/2022 19:20

I’m not vegetarian but even I’ve noticed this and it really isn’t on. Despite eating meat I enjoy a vegetarian lasagne and other veg options. It is so bizarre that the vegan obsession is wiping out vegetarian options.

jumpedintwice · 10/04/2022 19:20

I'm vegetarian and I don't mind if a meal is vegan or vegetarian, but I do mind if they contain fake meat or vegan cheese, because I want good quality food cooked from scratch from recognisable ingredients, not heavily processed convenience foods.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/04/2022 19:21

I know Mumsnet hates Toby Carvery, but they will serve you the roast potatoes, stuffing, Yorkshire pudding, vegetables and vegetarian gravy and it's slightly cheaper than the meat option.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 10/04/2022 19:21

@Carpy88999

Maybe you could take your agenda to another thread rather than proselytising here?

Abraxan · 10/04/2022 19:21

@Carpy88999

For the actual vegetarians can I ask why you don't eat meat?
I don't like the taste or texture of meat. I eat fish, so not vegetarian. I eat some fish anyway but don't like really meaty/chunky fish, as well as meat. Not eaten it now for nearly 30 years.
AlwaysAWoman · 10/04/2022 19:22

Drives me crazy as a (practically) life long veggie. Give me the cheese options please. Also, I won't eat 'fake meat' and have found so many places have got rid of 'proper' vegetable/bean burgers in favour of fake meat ones

SoupDragon · 10/04/2022 19:23

Haven’t they heard of plant butter?

You mean margarine. Been around for decades. Famously not actual butter.

IdiotIntrusion · 10/04/2022 19:24

Usually carveries are quite good for subbing out the meat for an extra Yorkie and stuffing ball (which is an absolute bonus might I add). Not yet had one tell me no - could it just have been that specific place was awkward?

Completely understand why people are vegan as you want to stamp out as much animal abuse as you can but I don't understand the egg and milk situation...

Eggs are a bi-product of chickens. They'll lay them irrelevant and unless they're fertilised then it will never become a chicken. I understand not buying them from commercial shops due to caged hens and poor conditions but surely farm shops, or even home reared chickens, would provide ethical eggs?

Same goes with milk?

No animals harmed... Just animals doing what they do?

Cows don't just produce milk which im sure you must know and we've bred them to produce an ungodly amount. Same with chickens they now lay 10x more a year than they would naturally which puts an incredible strain on their body.
Suzi888 · 10/04/2022 19:28

@Carpy88999
I agree.
That’s why I eat plant butter and milk. I hate the dairy industry. But you asked why people are veggie. I gave some examples.

@BrightYellowDaffodil what agenda? This is an Internet forum open for discussion. Why are meat eaters so sensitive?
I used to eat meat, my choice. I didn’t get so offended all the time. Seriously 🙄

Abraxan · 10/04/2022 19:28

Vegan/dairy free butter doesn't taste the same as real diary butter, in my experience. More like margarine/spread. It's okay, but it's not the same as having a doorstep of fresh uncut bread with a think layer of real butter!

And I'm very very fussy about milk. I don't really like the taste of milk. I have a tiny bit of skimmed milk in hot drinks as I don't like it black. I've tried soy milk, oat milk and rice milk but couldn't get in with them at all, tasted worse than real milk.

IdiotIntrusion · 10/04/2022 19:28

But anyway! Not here to vegan bash or force agendas on anyone. Just simply moaning about how I would like a mound of delicious, creamy, dairy cheese on just about every meal I devour and hope that some of you fellow veg-heads feel the same 😁

Glad I'm not the only one who's noticed!
