Calling all vegetarians

HELLITHURT · 10/04/2022 16:09

My son had recently decided to become vegetarian, we have 14 due for Easter lunch, 13 meat eaters and the lamb is ordered for those.

So as a vegetarian, tell me what you would love to be served as your Easter lunch?

A roast that doesn't include meat abs a meat substitute, if so what?

Something completely different?

AIBU to ask your favourite veggie Easter meal?

Last Easter aldi had a really lovely plant menu roast, it was really nice, not sure if they are doing it this year as haven't checked as we are away, served with the rest of the roast veggies, and vegetarian gravy 😊

Notimeforaname · 10/04/2022 16:16

The quorn roast is lovely. I have that on Christmas with all the lovely veg and veggie friendly gravy

MillX · 10/04/2022 16:16

I’m a veggie. Personally I’m this situation I would like the meat substituted for some sort of individual vegetarian pie, tart or pastry bake. It would go nicely with all the roast veg and gravy (ps Bisto is vegetarian!)

ZaraSizeMedium · 10/04/2022 16:18

An M&S nut roast is my go to for veggies who come for roast dinner.

Tbh (depending on how old your son is) if my son decided he was becoming vegetarian he be told to come up with some ideas himself, rather than making and announcing the decision, and then expecting me to do the leg work.

Yes I've got that gravy! Thank you so much for mentioning though.

BBC goodfood perfect roast potatoes! Then a vegan gravy, lots of lovely roast veg and a big piece of cake! I don't need a veggie pastry thing, though many like them.

beattieedny · 10/04/2022 16:21

What is the nice mum, accommodating him! I'm veggie (makes kosher much easier, lol) and I love Quorn roast. Aldi have a brilliant veggie freezer selection. I enjoy all their stuff.

Teaandcrumpets95 · 10/04/2022 16:21

I'd probably go for a Linda McCartney pie type thing or just have the roast minus the meat load up on veggies and get an extra Yorkshire tbh 😂

ToastandJamandTea · 10/04/2022 16:22

I really like some meat free Richmond sausages to go with all the other sides of the roast. I usually cook the whole packet as the rest of my meat eating family love them too!

DownNative · 10/04/2022 16:23

Nut roast is one idea and cauliflower steak are two ideas. Both great with a roast!

axolotlfloof · 10/04/2022 16:23

My veggie son, would prefer quorn sausages.
I like a mushroom pie or similar. I would ask him to pick.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 10/04/2022 16:23

Definitely a roast, Asda do a fantastic nut roast with a blood orange glaze, or a mushroom Wellington

TellMeItIsntTrue · 10/04/2022 16:24

Linda McCartney’s red onion and rosemary sausages

2orangey · 10/04/2022 16:24

Love a quorn roast, but would be equally happy with some veggie sausages, some kind of veggie pastry and cheese thing (Aldi do them) or just cauliflower cheese. Don't like nut roast but of course this is a matter of personal preference.

FrenchyQ · 10/04/2022 16:25

I'd just have a couple of Linda McCartney sausages with the rest of the roast sides.

HELLITHURT · 10/04/2022 16:26

I have those anyway and I'm not veggie! Delicious! Although he had them last time he was home.

Love a Mushroom Wellington - Waitrose sell a very nice one if you don't want to make one (although they are very easy to do).

AliasGrape · 10/04/2022 16:31

I miss a roast dinner since I stopped eating meat so if someone was prepared to do me a veggie version then I’d prefer that to a separate dish.

I like an individual pie rather than a meat replacement really - higgidy do some nice ones or Lidl did some lovely ones last year - one was cauliflower and cheese and one was a butternut squash one. Not sure if they still do them but was in the ‘best’ range. For Christmas I often make Camembert and leek filo parcels ans serve them with the usual vegetables and roast potatoes.

That said I’d be happy with some cauldron Lincolnshire sausages if easier. They’re the best veggie sausages I’ve found.

Seriously79 · 10/04/2022 16:32

I was a vegetarian when I was younger. I didn't have anything as a replacement, just extra veg and potatoes.

Thumpkin · 10/04/2022 16:32

A very easy one which works well if everyone else is having some sort of roast is veggie sausages, Yorkshire puddings, all the vegetable trimmings and veggie gravy. I can make it in 15 mins or a bit longer with roast potatoes.

shepherdlincoln · 10/04/2022 16:32

I have been vegetarian for years, and I have found m&s 'plants kitchen's range to be the best for finding something really tasty. I tend to stick with the fake sausages with a roast since they are reliably good and go with all the usual potatoes Yorkie puds etc nicely and can just be banged in the oven. But maybe you could have DS pick something he fancies they often have wellington type things. And remember he can't have dripping on potatoes or gravy Grin

blueluce85 · 10/04/2022 16:33

I love the linda mccartney roast, that's nice with some stuffing

didireallyjustsaythat · 10/04/2022 16:34

Asda does a fantastic vegan wellington. It's so delicious the whole family eats it without a fuss.

Thumpkin · 10/04/2022 16:34

If there’s no protein at all in the meal then that’s a very nutritionally unbalanced diet, especially for a 14 year old boy who is going to be needing extra protein for growth.
toastofthetown · 10/04/2022 16:34

I'd ask what he wants. Personally I'd rather just have sides than a Quorn roast or sausages (which I'm not really a fan of). I hate nut roast. My family only do a big Christmas roast rather than Easter, but here are some things I've enjoyed. Some might be a bit Christmassy, but all delicious. But honestly, as long as your vegetable side dishes are tasty, I'm more than happy with potatoes and vegetables.
Mushroom Cobbler
Parsnip Roulade
Brie and Cranberry Twists - not sure if it was this exact recipe, but a similar idea
