Calling all vegetarians

HELLITHURT · 10/04/2022 16:09

My son had recently decided to become vegetarian, we have 14 due for Easter lunch, 13 meat eaters and the lamb is ordered for those.

So as a vegetarian, tell me what you would love to be served as your Easter lunch?

A roast that doesn't include meat abs a meat substitute, if so what?

Something completely different?

AIBU to ask your favourite veggie Easter meal?

@DownNative

Nut roast is one idea and cauliflower steak are two ideas. Both great with a roast!
Off to research cauliflower steak!

I make a lovely mushroom, leek and chestnut wellington for veggie guests. Lots of the meat eaters prefer to have it too!
I think a nice side like cauliflower cheese always goes down well too

AlisonDonut · 10/04/2022 16:39

If there’s no protein at all in the meal then that’s a very nutritionally unbalanced diet, especially for a 14 year old boy who is going to be needing extra protein for growth.

It is 1 meal. I'm sure he will be fine. When I went veggie in 1984 there were no protiens that you didn't have to make yourself. The only thing you could buy was cheese and onion pasties.

OP take your son into a supermarket, and let him choose from the plethora of veggie options that are available these days. Even better, get him involved in the whole shopping and cooking shebang.

hashbrownsandwich · 10/04/2022 16:40

A higgidy pie, I love the sweet potato and feta one personally!

Jessstar · 10/04/2022 16:41

In our house we would have one who would pick Richmond meat free sausages. One who would go for a Higgidy Pie and one who would pick a roast cauliflower.

Scarecrowrowboat · 10/04/2022 16:44

One of those Higgidy Pigiddy pies maybe?

Dancer47 · 10/04/2022 16:44

Oooo yes a nice roast - a quorn roast, nut roast (both very high protein) or plant based roast, roast potatoes, yorkshire puddings, veg and gravy!

(PS I have read on here that some people have cailiflower cheese with a roast dinner! I always make that with hard boiled fresh eggs in it, cut in half in the with cauliflower, cheese sauce and topped with more cheese, and sometimes with tangy tomatoes in the bottom of the dish for a bit of oooomphy zing!

mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

IpanemaFleur · 10/04/2022 16:46

For my veggie dd I often buy a veggie haggis, cut into 4 pieces length ways and roast it. Goes nice and crunchy.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 10/04/2022 16:47

High days and holidays we tend to do a marinade on a quorn roast. There are some gorgeous products out there as others have mentioned but I tend to only do this special roast at certain times

Today is Cauliflower cheese, a firm favourite in our house

KittenKong · 10/04/2022 16:50

I love all the veggies (obviously not goose fat roasted potatoes) with Yorkshire pud and… veggie haggis. Yes it may sound odd but it’s really nice (with applesauce and veggie gravy).

Yes! I love you…
MySecretHistory · 10/04/2022 16:50

Dont give the non veggies Bisto gravy
You might as well chuck the lamb in the bin if you are serving it with Bisto

DietOrDie · 10/04/2022 16:51

A nice pie is usually a good alternative to a roast meat option. There's some good fake meat on the market (you really do have to try different brands though - I can't stand Tesco's Plant Chef or Wicked, but I find Vivera quite reliable, as is the Quorn fake chicken). Pieminister do a good range of veggie pies.

The best veggie gravy of all though is the M&S Plant Kitchen. Hands down, delicious I could drink it out of a mug It comes in a long life pouch for £1.50.

Oh no home made all the way with that! Meat juices, gravy browning etc!

Thank you so much everyone!

I've messaged him about veggie haggis and it was a definite thumbs up!

Lots of ideas for the future though.

I agree with others who are saying a pie would be nice. I would ask him what sort of thing he would prefer though as people’s preferences vary. Eg someone above mentioned cauliflower steak which I personally would find disappointing. We have had the veggie haggis before too though and that is nice

Yes - one of the few ‘made’ vegan things I actually like!

Never try Tofurkey. It’s the worst.

WhoppingBigBackside · 10/04/2022 16:59

Cook your roast potatoes in vegatable oil, and make veggie gravy.
Just this once, use a ready-made pie or meat substitute
Quorn and Caldron are ok, but the plant based vegan meat or cheese substitutes aren't.

KittenKong · 10/04/2022 16:59

Veggie haggis. I don one in the microwave and you get nice crunch bits around the outside and the middle stud soft. The McSweens one - not Halls (that has the texture of cat food - I’ve never eaten cat food but I suspect it tastes like it too).

IpanemaFleur · 10/04/2022 17:00

KittenKong you are welcome at my house any Sunday we are having crunchy v haggis Smile

Actually lots of meat eaters go for it as well so I have to bat them away until the veggies have eaten!

veronicagoldberg · 10/04/2022 17:05

@beattieedny

What is the nice mum, accommodating him! I'm veggie (makes kosher much easier, lol) and I love Quorn roast. Aldi have a brilliant veggie freezer selection. I enjoy all their stuff.

Totally with you on vegetarianism making kosher easier! So much less hassle, and less cost.

OP, I would be happy with an individual tart or quiche-style thing to replace the meat component.

Seriously79 · 10/04/2022 17:06

@Thumpkin I've made it to the grand old age of 43, and it hasn't done me any harm.

Quincythequince · 10/04/2022 17:07

HELL doe she like stuffing?

My youngest DS is ovo veggie (hates dairy) and my DD is veggie and so I often do a veggie wellington style dish.

Pastry, filled with a stuffing type of centre - breaecrumbs, cooked veggies etc, maybe some bits, but of cranberry or apple - then served with almost everything else.

Disclaimer: I now cook all my potatoes veggie and make them a separate gravy too.

Seems to go down well and makes a nice special dish!

Or a veggie hunters chicken (quorn fillets, veggie bacon, BBQ sauce, bechamel-Style covering or cheese)
Puf

Quincythequince · 10/04/2022 17:10

Higgidy pies are great too.
