Calling all vegetarians

HELLITHURT · 10/04/2022 16:09

My son had recently decided to become vegetarian, we have 14 due for Easter lunch, 13 meat eaters and the lamb is ordered for those.

So as a vegetarian, tell me what you would love to be served as your Easter lunch?

A roast that doesn't include meat abs a meat substitute, if so what?

Something completely different?

AIBU to ask your favourite veggie Easter meal?

I had a mushroom wellington bought from Asda (I think), it was flipping lovely.

again2020 · 10/04/2022 17:18

Pieminster do a lovely veggie pie, I think it'd called Kevin 🤣 delicious.
I also love a quorn roast with veggie gravy.
A Wellington is also a good bet, M and S and waitress have good ones.

Neapolitanicecream · 10/04/2022 17:21

That quorn is awful and give me stomach cramps. Use the soya tesco mince much better

cushioncovers · 10/04/2022 17:22

Quorn sausages or Richmond sausages.

DinosaurFarmer · 10/04/2022 17:23

I'm veggie and I like the Quorn Roast (leftovers are nice for sandwiches afterwards as well) or some veggie sausages with all the veggies and potatoes. I hate nut roast of any type!!

KittenKong · 10/04/2022 17:23

Quorn (mince particularly) can give terrible cramps. I once made a bolognaise for me and DS and he was sick as a dog for a couple of days and my stomach was like a volcano.

TrufflyPig · 10/04/2022 17:24

A Linda McCartney pie is my fav thing with a roast. Lidl do nice Stilton and mushrooms pastry things too (but this may only be at Christmas). Quorn roast is OK if you slow cook it veg gravy, bit dry otherwise. Richmond no meat Sausages are also very nice.

If I'm going to a carvery though I just ask for extra Yorkshire puddings instead of any meat.

inappropriateraspberry · 10/04/2022 17:26

Ask him what he'd like! Lots of options available. Lidl do lovely individual wellingtons, with stuff like Stilton and spinach, mushroom etc.
And to echo PPs, don't use goose fat, beef dripping for potatoes etc!
Personally, I can't stand nut roasts, but just check with him.

cardibach · 10/04/2022 17:27

@MillX

I’m a veggie. Personally I’m this situation I would like the meat substituted for some sort of individual vegetarian pie, tart or pastry bake. It would go nicely with all the roast veg and gravy (ps Bisto is vegetarian!)
Bisto is also disgusting, chemical tasting (I know everything is a chemical, but you know what I mean) and makes lots of people (including me) feel really, really ill for the rest of the day.
fortheloveofcheesecake · 10/04/2022 17:29

I love some sort of pastry dish....pie, Wellington, tart. Yum.

DietOrDie · 10/04/2022 17:29

A small minority of people are allergic to Quorn (mycoprotein); there's a warning on the back of the pack. My guess is you're one of them.

You should be ok with other fake meats though, if not made of mycoprotein, assuming you don't have an intolerance to any of the other allergens that commonly appear such as wheat and soya

TheVanguardSix · 10/04/2022 17:32

Maybe a shitake mushroom and black bean type of stew with lots of fresh parsley and garlic, a dash of marigold bouillon... some carrots and peas too? He can eat it with the non-meat sides you're serving.

I don't do many nutty things either. And if he's going to go perhaps not vegan but low dairy, Oatly 'whole' milk is the bomb! It really is the best. I think oat milk is the most agreeable milk (to me anyway- almond milk doesn't sit well with me. Soy does but I don't want to drink too much soy milk and also Oatly works beautifully in tea and coffee).

TheVanguardSix · 10/04/2022 17:34

Just to add to the thread... I can't eat mycoprotein either. It really upsets me. I really dislike the taste of Quorn products. There really isn't a match for LM's rosemary and red onion sausages is there? They are the best. I've loved them for years. Richmond's vegan sausages are decent. My kids like them.

maddy68 · 10/04/2022 17:37

I would want a full roast. Or whatever it is you are cooking for everyone else But with a meat substitute. Bisto is vegatarian weirdly

MillX · 10/04/2022 17:37

I mentioned Bisto as it’s very popular and most people are surprised that it’s suitable for vegetarians! Whether you think it’s disgusting or not is just a matter of personal taste

midsomermurderess · 10/04/2022 17:39

I know not everyone likes spicy food, but if you do, for vegetarianism I'd usually look for something Indian. A lentil and egg curry or a paneer and chickpea fry, a biryani. A faff I guess, when you're already doing a roast though. And vegetarian, if you can get it, Macsween, haggis is good.

amylou8 · 10/04/2022 17:40

I'm always happy with just a big plate of veggies, potatoes and yorkshires. Only concession is some veggie gravy.

TheLadyDIdGood · 10/04/2022 17:43

COOK do a good vegetarian Easter range

The Pukka Pies are surprisingly nice (they’re cheap). They have a couple of vegetarian options

7eleven · 10/04/2022 17:53

I’ve been vege for 40 years. I’ve found the Bisto Best Onion gravy to be the nicest.

Odoreida · 10/04/2022 17:57

I love ratatouille (or roast aubergines and feta) with roast lamb - it goes perfectly, and it's actually really nice with roasties etc. So you could make that, make sure the veggie person gets lots and then it's a lovely side dish for everyone else.

OMG12 · 10/04/2022 17:59

Quorn peppered steak is nice- take DS to supermarket and ask what he fancies.

Cherrysherbet · 10/04/2022 18:01

Cauliflower cheese is my fave.

Bimblybomeyelash · 10/04/2022 18:03

As it’s a ‘special occasion’ I’d like something nice from M and S! I’d be secretly abut disappointed with veggie sausage or a quorn roast.
