Product/service idea: Salad rental.

You phone the salad rental depot nearest you and they pop round with a lovely bowl of salad for your party. The guests see the healthy vegetables and rainbow of pretty colours sitting among your tasty beige buffet and judge you to be a good and worthwhile person. Then after the party has finished the salad rental van comes back and packs up the uneaten salad so it can be taken to the next party.

Could maybe rent out pineapples as well for when you have visitors.

Any investors?

@StripeyDeckchair

Thats gross, who would want salad that'd been to multiple other parties!!!
I agree especially in the hot weather caterers can only leave food out fir a couple of hours anyway

Just disgusting

Why not just do healthy party food as a caterer?

Katie Price has been married 3 times but she's still a great catch for any discerning gentleman.

Genius.

Now, if you were to add one of those strawberry choc fountains, you'll be rolling in it.

@duvetdayforeveryone

YABU. You don't win friends with salad.

If you want your guests to eat healthy, the food must seem appealing.

  • Mini corn on the cob on a skewer (similar to KFC but made at home)
  • Vegetables worth dipping in dip, such as cucumber sticks, sugar snap peas.
  • Sushi is always a hit Grin
Thanks.

I now have “you don’t make friends with salad” going through my head

Can I also rent the apple that I buy, put in my bag and then throw away a week later?

Fernandina · 27/03/2022 10:28

This has given me an idea.

I'm going to branch out into the rental of the eclectic book collection (complete with bookshelf if required).

@SarahAndQuack

Holographic salad might be the plastic salad of salad rentals, though?

@Cheeseandlobster

I genuinely love salad as do a lot of my friends. We also love cake and biscuits so not a stealth boast. You are assuming no one would eat the salad but we would demolish it which would leave no salad for the next party. Out of a party of say 20, you could guarantee at least 5 people would have a bit of salad so why would the next party want a salad that has been partially eaten?
Cheeseandlobster, in that case I think you'd need a real salad in addition to the stunt salad. Be sure to tell your salad-demolishing friends which one is fair game.
Iwantacampervan · 27/03/2022 10:45

We had a stunt apple that travelled to school and back daily for several years - in fact, it may even be still lurking here.

BattledoreAndShuttlecock · 27/03/2022 10:46

I agree that the obvious solution of pIastic salad would be social suicide if it were ever discovered by some unusual guest. But I think there's a business opportunity in salad/fruit desiccation, perhaps with some form of corn starch based varnish sprayed on top. It could sit there unaltered for months and/or be shuffled from party to party and in the unlikely event that anyone actually ate it it wouldn't harm them (much).

The real problem is that people do actually take salad and put it on their plates at buffets. They just don't eat it. So you'd need to recover it before they threw it into the food waste to get it back to the rental company

sueelleker · 27/03/2022 10:48

@Gazelda

You could do a sideline in tomato juice. It sits on the 'bar' looking exotic and interesting. But no one drinks it so it can be crated up at the end of the night. Pop some sticks of celery in a tall glass next to the Tom juice too.
I like tomato juice! In past times renting pineapples was actually a 'thing'.www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-53432877

@declutteringmymind

A stunt salad?? Lol

A local cafe near us has fake your own dinner party. You take your pie dish and they put whatever you want in it - lasagne, shepherds pie etc. it's bloody genius.

This is amazing

pennysays · 27/03/2022 10:55

@Mysterian

Couldn't do fruit salad. People eat that.

Salad getting more expensive the more experience it has? People might prefer a shy young novice salad. Needs research. That's why I'm here.

Only if it’s got good fruit in. If it’s all oranges and melon then no one will touch it.
MermaidEyes · 27/03/2022 10:55

Yes, exactly, or the poor friends will be having to cough up for the damages charge

OrchardBlack · 27/03/2022 11:00

This has really tickled me Grin

UptownWorld · 27/03/2022 11:15

When I worked at a local golf club as a waitress, we used to decant sauces into little sauce dishes. And at the end of the meal, scrape what was left back into the big jar! Grin

BrightonBunny · 27/03/2022 11:32

This thread has reminded me of lovely auntie who is sadly no longer with us.

Every week she would buy about £10 worth of fruit (from her limited budget) and put it in a bowl. She never ate any of it and just threw it away. It was a show/stunt fruit bowl.

Yes, I get it was a dreadful waste of food. The salad rental obviously overcomes that so yeah - good luck OP Grin

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 27/03/2022 11:38

Be careful, I have tried to start a number of these sort of businesses with little success...
Renta-bogbrush - failed.
Share-a-teabag - failed.
Smell-busters (emergency team race round to house and spray commercial-grade air freshener through the letterbox - no takers.
Bed warming service - (still sub judice)
There are others I'm still working on but don't want reveal details at the moment because they could earn me millions and millions. 🤞🤞

Snazzyjazzpants · 27/03/2022 11:53

@0blio

Don't forget bananas for the fruit bowl and lunch boxes. On hire to take to work and school then brought back at the end of the day.
This is known as a boomerang banana.

Op you could have a luxury option to throw in a rented luxury never-burned candle too so everyone knows the renters shop at Jo Malone

PlainOldMe80 · 27/03/2022 12:08

How much would the rental be? And will there be extra charges if someone ate the salad?
