To avoid ever booking with P&O

The sackings were disgusting, but with the event of todays news that the replacement workers are being paid just over £5 per hour I wouldn't give the directors of P&O a penny of my money.
Such diabolical treatment of people.

OP posts:

I don't often use ferries but would definitely not consider them now. It's awful how those workers have been treated. I hope (probably in vain) that the government will do something to close the loophole.

Ericaequites · 24/03/2022 17:31

Firing long term highly compensated employees is unethical and dangerous. If you have worked on the same ship for over two decades, you know her the way your tongue knows your teeth. if there is an emergency or evacuation, you know the drills, where passengers might hide, and other useful bits. Working on a team with others so long makes all of you more effective. This summer, I was planning to take the ferry Hull- Rotterdam to see the Netherlands, but have changed my mind. I’ll take a cheap flight instead.

£5.50 an hour? I doubt that will encourage a safety conscious dedicated workforce. I would not be half tossed for a job that paid me that!

PearlclutchersInc · 24/03/2022 20:08

The chap (their CEO) who was being interviewed earlier enraged me.

His argument that "The business model is unsustainable" just didn't wash - just fuck off and leave it to Stena then if you can't make it work for you. I bet that he's still being paid his full salary.

How the hell are people supposed to live on £5.50 hr - the whole argument of maritime legislation or whatever is based (presumably) on people from third world countries living on board.

Argggh - sorry, for the first time in a while just totally, utterly hacked off for something in this country that is so blatantly unfair.

Heatherjayne1972 · 24/03/2022 20:11

What else are they doing on the cheap?

I wouldn’t sail with them now I’d be worried safety was compromised

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 24/03/2022 20:16

The vast bulk of the new staff are not going to be earning anything like £5.50 an hour. That's the average rate across the entirety of the new crews, which takes into account Captains, FO's etc.

More than likely the vast majority of the people operating these vessels will be earning somewhere in the region of 80p - £1.50 an hour. All while operating out of UK ports.

Scandal, disgrace, and outrage doesn't come anywhere close to describing this.

user1471443411 · 24/03/2022 20:25

I've been thinking this recently - I think it's going to massively backfire on them and they may even have to close the business, one of the other ferry companies will probably take over.

HandlebarLadyTash · 24/03/2022 20:36

P&O are disgusting, I will never travel with a company that values a workforce so little.

TheGonnagle · 24/03/2022 20:38

I won’t give them a penny of my money, their behaviour is beyond contemptible.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 24/03/2022 20:39

I would never either OP!!!!

felulageller · 24/03/2022 20:41

Boycott all the way.

Twixie2022 · 24/03/2022 20:42

Used to travel yearly if not twice a year with them and will not be ever considering it now. Was discussing this with colleagues today actually and literally everyone of them said the same. Utter disgrace.

whatever1980 · 24/03/2022 20:42

Surely, when they were playing out how the mass firing would be perceived, they factored in reputation all damage and customers boycotting them which would then damage their business further unless they think customers won't care in time and will come back. I won't. Safety first.

SuitcaseOfWhine · 24/03/2022 20:47

I would never use them. As pp have said I would worry about safety if they are going to these length to save money. I bet they have cut corners elsewhere.

The way they have treated their staff is another reason I wouldn't use them.

Username917778 · 24/03/2022 20:50

Pre pandemic we did hull - zebrugge/rotterdam and calais - Dover every year! Will never travel again with them. I'm looking at other companies now.

HumptySumptious · 24/03/2022 20:50

I'm boycotting them too. Utterly disgusting behaviour.

Stellaris22 · 24/03/2022 20:54

After the cost cutting measures with Boeing and the crashes it caused I'd have serious doubts using P&O if they are focussed on saving money.

LizzieSiddal · 24/03/2022 20:54

The CEO said today that he’d do exactly the same thing again!
I hope they now go bust and some other smaller company, who treat their workers fairly, takes their business.

PinkiOcelot · 24/03/2022 20:58

£5.50 an hour?! WTF?! That’s disgraceful.

I wouldn’t book with them either.

Valenciaoranges · 24/03/2022 20:59

I would never use them nor will I use Ryanair

Thedogscollar · 24/03/2022 21:02

Hell will freeze over before I'd ever even remotely consider using them.
Hopefully they will be fined millions when proven that they have acted unlawfully.

JaceLancs · 24/03/2022 21:14

Another company off my list

HELLITHURT · 24/03/2022 21:15

@HandlebarLadyTash

P&O are disgusting, I will never travel with a company that values a workforce so little.
100%!
ZaraSizeMedium · 24/03/2022 21:17

I assume that their penny pinching will extend to all areas of their business including passenger safety.

I’ll never use them again.
