To avoid ever booking with P&O

The sackings were disgusting, but with the event of todays news that the replacement workers are being paid just over £5 per hour I wouldn't give the directors of P&O a penny of my money.
Such diabolical treatment of people.

@Ellmau

Sorry.. P&O Cruises are owned by a British company.

Aren't they owned by Carnival, based in the US?

They're a UK company based in Southampton.
MargotMoon · 25/03/2022 22:23

This says it all really: P&O Ferries ship detained over crew training concerns www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-60881550

cakeorwine · 25/03/2022 22:33

If a ferry operates between 2 countries, which minimum wage law applies?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/03/2022 22:38

"The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said the European Causeway passenger boat had been held in Larne over multiple issues ... there had been "failures on crew familiarisation, vessel documentation and crew training""

Quelle surprise Hmm

@implantreplace

A close friend has been extensively involved in the legalities of this (works for p&o)

I won’t go in to detail for fear of getting her/him in trouble

But I will say that there is a lot more to this than been reported.

The redundancy packages are incredibly generous

If p&o had not done what they did - there would have been no redundancy packages and everyone out of jobs and all their suppliers left without payment.

So I would absolutely use P&O.
The only thing that would stop me is that I have very little desire to go on a cruise!

If there is more to it, then why are their ferries now being detained over staff not being trained enough to do their jobs?

I wouldn't use them because of the drop in safety. Not simply because of the pay side, so many companies pay badly. If you actually look into how companies pay their staff, a lot of you would have to rethink where you shop for food and clothes.

But I cannot ignore the safety aspect. It's too dangerous being on a ferry with badly trained staff.

Bohemianwannabe · 26/03/2022 00:25

And wtf is chief exec keeping his 325k job if they are so hard up does he get a pay cut too? Ffs

As explained on this thread, P&O cruises and P&O Ferries are completely different businesses.
implantreplace · 26/03/2022 07:23

@Merrymouse

Both owned and operated by the same company
DP world

Different types of businesses. Not “completely different businesses

implantreplace · 26/03/2022 07:25

Ignore that @Merrymouse

Reread message from friend and she says that the above is common misconception

Apologies

ThinWomansBrain · 26/03/2022 07:35

P&O Cruises should probably rebrand and change their name
Having just read another thread, Alan Sugar can put them in touch with some fab reject apprentices that will have a go, already had lots of experiences with cruises Grin

What do Stena, and Brittany pay their staff on the UK ships (journeys that start and finish from the UK?)

Prettynails · 26/03/2022 07:43

I have a massive amount of shares in them - I will be keeping them as I want to use my voice from the inside for the moment, but £5.50 is the highest new hourly rate others will be lower. It’s disgusting. I will dispose of my shares after I have voiced by opinion as a share holder.

balalake · 26/03/2022 07:51

If I used ferries, I would never book with them again. What I think you should also be doing is not holidaying in Dubai, denying far more income to the owners.

OverByYer · 26/03/2022 07:56

Will not use again.

raspberryjamchicken · 26/03/2022 07:56

We usually choose DFDS over P&O anyway as prefer the service but definitely won't be going with P&O again. However, boycotting the company is not enough. The government needs to bring in some decent employment laws in this country. We're going too far in a US-styke direction. A Conservative government will never do that, sadly.

@Prettynails

Are your shares in dp world?

cakeorwine · 26/03/2022 09:55

When does a ferry start and finish though? Brittany Ferries basically ferry people between France and the UK. They come to port, stock up, fuel up, take on passengers and go.

From a French perspective, they could start and finish in France.

Where do the crew live? Where do they get their food?

facilface · 26/03/2022 09:59

@Prettynails

Dp world owns p&o ferries
Dubai assumed full state control of DP world in 2020

So either you’re “Dubai” OR you’re telling porkies about having a massive amount of shares in them Grin

Lemonyfuckit · 26/03/2022 10:01

@XDownwiththissortofthingX

The vast bulk of the new staff are not going to be earning anything like £5.50 an hour. That's the average rate across the entirety of the new crews, which takes into account Captains, FO's etc.

More than likely the vast majority of the people operating these vessels will be earning somewhere in the region of 80p - £1.50 an hour. All while operating out of UK ports.

Scandal, disgrace, and outrage doesn't come anywhere close to describing this.

Yeah apparently it's actually more like about £1.80 an hour according to my DH - and there I was reading this thinking £5.50 an hour was disgusting). Will never travel with P&O again.
Waterfordaston · 26/03/2022 10:02

I would rather swim than use them.

The CEO situation played out exactly as I predicted; he would take one for the team and then leave. All that being forced to leave by the government is bollocks. He knew he would have to go and I’m sure his exit has been greased.

TheWatersofMarch · 26/03/2022 10:12

Pre Covid I regularly used P and O Dover Calais. I will never use them again. Watch me. I'll use the tunnel or a Western crossing and treat it as part of the holiday. They are toast.

SerendipitySunshine · 26/03/2022 10:22

Never again.

gettingolderandgrumpy · 26/03/2022 10:46

Oh absolutely it’s disgusting treating staff like this it’s illegal. It starts a precedent for other companies can you imagine if other companies tried this . British Gas have been very immoral years ago they started sending offshore work for back office so huge redundancies then and now they have done the whole fire re hire .
What p&o did was illegal and they should get huge fines that are paid in compensation to staff . I understand they needed to make huge financial cuts but this is not the way at all .
