To tell him to shove the ... slippers?

Dh has a thing about being barefoot in the house. It's bad and wrong, apparently, and will lead to pneumonia and/or arthritis (he's Italian, so... Hmm).

I, on the other hand, hate wearing shoes and prefer to be barefoot at home whenever possible.

Fine, we have learned to live with our opposing views on appropriate footwear. Grin

However, he keeps nagging DD (who's 5) to put on her slippers. DD has inherited my approach to footwear and would prefer to be barefoot. But he reminds her about ten times a day to put her slippers on. And then he gets cross when she doesn't have them on. And then there's a big to-do because of the fucking slippers. Hmm Hmm Hmm

I haven't said anything up to now, in the spirit of always backing up the other parent, but any day now, I'm going to flip and tell him to shove the fucking slippers up his fucking ... Angry Angry Angry

AIBU?

(Lighthearted, before I'm told I'm being incredibly childish/DH should LTB, etc.)

Wait a bit longer and she’ll probably tell him herself.

catandcoffee · 25/12/2022 19:45

Walking barefoot can be the cause of Mortons Nueroma...ask me how I know 😫

I've spent most of my adult life bare foot at home. Now I have to live in flip-flops.

poefaced · 25/12/2022 19:48

He’s right though. Walking barefoot on hard floors can cause chilblains and will lower your body temperature. If your feet get cold then the rest of the body is affected. Fine for you as you’re an adult and can make your own choices but dd should be encouraged to wear slippers.

And slippers are so comfortable, why wouldn’t you want her to wear themm.

How cold are your floors that they’re giving you chilblains? I like having something on my feet but dd is definitely just a barefoot person so we’ve given up trying to ‘encourage’ her, it’s not worth arguing over and her feet haven’t fallen off yet. The problem isn’t slippers or no slippers its the neurotic insistence upon one way or the other.

spidereggs · 25/12/2022 20:13

Farmers wife here, I'm a slippers are a must mum. Have spare pairs at main farm house and sister in laws.

Freezing stone floors.

Never grew up wearing them though and my mum is a total fusspot about some things

Thelondonone · 25/12/2022 20:15

Walking barefoot and plantar fasciitis makes me team slippers.

Isittrueornot · 25/12/2022 20:20

Does she walk on tip toes? If so get her to wear slippers. My legs are bent because I was always barefoot, but when barefoot walked on my tip ties as a kid. Decades later my legs are still bent and always will be now I guess

buttermut · 25/12/2022 20:26

I'm team slippers all the way. Sorry.

Letthekidsplay · 25/12/2022 20:27

I think it’s cute he cares so much about her feet

Dedontdodatderdode · 25/12/2022 20:29

Im with DH.

New research shows that having chilly feet increases the risk of catching a cold, flu, or other viruses. According to Dr. Ron Eccles, director of Cardiff University's Common Cold Centre, most people carry the bugs which cause colds and flu in their nose already without them showing the symptoms that make them ill

pompei8309 · 25/12/2022 20:36

Slippers always , I have carpets and still wear them

Mindystryder · 25/12/2022 20:39

I'm amazed this is a thing! I've never worn slippers, I don't even wear socks at home (take them off with shoes when I get in). My feet need to be freeee. I also sleep with my feet outside the duvet as otherwise I feel like I can't breathe which, according to my sister, makes me both a weirdo and vulnerable to the bogey man Grin

Walking barefoot and plantar fasciitis makes me team slippers.

I was told people who walk a lot in their jobs get plantar facilities…. a lot of nurses get it and as far as I’m aware they all wear shoes!

ChocolateHelps · 25/12/2022 20:41

Really..all these people saying slippers are a medical necessity? Must have missed that memo.

My kids 17 & 14 are definitely in the barefoot camp. Centrally heated home. Wood floors and carpet downstairs. Children especially get a lot of feedback thru their bare feet. Look into barefoot running for the other side of the coin

reallyworriedjobhunter · 25/12/2022 20:58

But humans are designed to be bare foot? How can going barefoot in a house which is presumably safe and clean be bad for your health.

We do what you feel like in our house - barefoot/socks/slippers. We have an old house with cold floors on the ground floor but the kids still choose to go barefoot often.

To them, it would be like wearing gloves indoors.

Dr Eccles, md of the slipper factory 😉

bluebeardswife7 · 25/12/2022 21:18

DP always says to DC 'put on slippers so you don't stub your toes' quite frankly, I can do without abandoned slippers on the floor, and the kids don't feel cold anyway.

Hankunamatata · 25/12/2022 21:20

We have this argument. We compromise on wearing socks

NosyNeighbour22 · 25/12/2022 21:32

All those poor crippled early humans with their morton’s neuroma and planter fasciitis how did the human race ever survive!

op barefoot is best for kids, it allows feet to develop properly! I usually nag my kids to put socks on though because i think their feet must be cold but they don’t seem to feel it. Never had chilblains either!

Conversely, my mum would never let us wear slippers because she was convinced they would cause us to fall down the stairs 😂

tigger1001 · 25/12/2022 21:42

If kids don't want to wear them they won't. Both of mine still go through phases of wearing them then not.

I always hated wearing them and was barefoot in the house, but thanks to plantar fasciitis it now hurts me to be barefoot 🙁 so wear slippers with a modded footbed to ease the pain

The bogeyman? 😛 what does he do, put his bogeys on you? 😂

CaptainBarbosa · 25/12/2022 21:54

The only time I have shoes on is if I'm going out 🤷🏻‍♀️

I will literally walk around the house all day barefoot, I'll even walk around the garden in the summer barefoot, I climb the ladder to the loft and go in the loft barefoot, I've even been known to pop out to the car barefoot, shock horror 😳

I have no medical issues with my feet whatsoever! Or any possible associated medical issues.

DS is the same, always barefoot except for school or playing out with friends.

We have survived.

NotDecemberYet · 25/12/2022 21:55

I love being barefoot . I buy slippers because they look cosy and end up not wearing them . Ds7 is the same . He has slippers , slipper boots and slipper socks but they mainly live under his bed ! As soon as we get home he not only takes off his outside shoes but his socks too .
Dh is a slipper person in contrast . So was his mum
who always had a spare pair in her house for me.

Topseyt123 · 25/12/2022 22:06

I want to wear slippers during the winter as once my feet go cold they take forever to warm up again.

I wear crocs during warm weather in summer, or a pair of flip flop style sandals indoors (and often outdoors too).

I'm not keen on being barefoot. Not for me.

MagpiePi · 25/12/2022 22:08

It’s definitely an English thing to be horrified by bare feet.
I’d rather have a pair of Queensland heels than a pair of slippers. 😁
