To stop entering competitions because no one wins anything?

Just that really. Not even about the lottery or lucky dips or anything like that.
It’s Vodafone rewards; sky VIP, win a weekend for 2 etc etc. Has anyone ever actually won anything from random online competitions? I keep entering but never win and don’t know anyone in real life that has ever won.

OP posts:

Dice often do 'competitions' for London music festival or other gigs when the tickets haven't sold out. It's not a definite win but I'd say I've managed to get free tickets about 1/3 of the time. Odds are better if you can get a couple of mates to enter as well

Marmite27 · 03/03/2022 22:58

I won a £200 IKEA voucher from mumsnet and we’ve had a few books from sky vip (Aliens love pantaclaus and a Captain underpants one).

I once won the Ladygram competition in The Lady magazine. Unfortunately the prize was a bit meh. Something called a scarflet. Can't imagine ever wearing it.

JuteWeaver · 03/03/2022 23:05

I won a British artisan food hamper last year.

Someone has to win. Keep trying, I say!

Briony123 · 03/03/2022 23:07

@MangoSeason

And the only other thing I have won was some Tupperware in a school raffle when I was 8. Not exciting for me, although mum was thrilled and still uses in 35 years later.
This made my day! Ultimately, you have to be in it to win it Grin
LondonQueen · 03/03/2022 23:11

I won a weekend away to a very swanky hotel a few years ago!

poolblue · 03/03/2022 23:15

I once won a radio in the shape of an orange. The straw was an ariel. Loved it.

BadHairDayExpert · 03/03/2022 23:19

I hear ya OP - I have been trying to win free pizza for a year from Domino oh-ohs but nope, shit out of luck Grin

therarebear · 03/03/2022 23:25

I won 4 tickets to Frozen the Musical (brilliant), a family day pass to a farm/activity type place and a family annual pass for Royal Historic Palaces (Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace etc). And I won a voucher for coffee and cake for two people at our local lovely bakery, from our school raffle. I was beside myself Grin!

aibutohavethisusername · 03/03/2022 23:28

I’ve won:
Concert tickets
£100 gin
Computer
Football match tickets
Computer games

XenoBitch · 03/03/2022 23:29

@TAKESNOSHITSHIRLEY

That is really helpful! I used to spend hours doing online surveys for very little reward, and the odd free sample to test (I got sent condoms for one!).
Can you give/sell the prizes on if you don't want them? I remember Take a Break used to have a make-over as a prize... that would be my idea of hell. I also don't have a passport so foreign holiday ones would be useless.

Smokeahontas · 03/03/2022 23:30

@jackstini

I go through stages of entering loads then can't be bothered for a while

Won:
Sweatshirt
£500 Amazon voucher
50 packs of beef jerky
Trip to Paris
Flights to San Francisco
£150
Bottle of gin
12 bath bombs
Suit hire for our wedding
Flowers

Always a nice surprise when it happens

Mostly do whilst on boring corporate zoom calls!

Sorry but the 50 packs of beef jerky really made me laugh!
Walkacrossthesand · 04/03/2022 10:13

@TAKESNOSHITSHIRLEY, as a matter of interest, how much spam email arrives in your 'comps only' email inbox? One thing that puts me off entering is the thought that it's yet another company with my data to market at me, and sell on...

thetemptationofchocolate · 04/03/2022 10:42

I won £50 cash once, that was handy.
Have won other things too but not often and nothing life-changing!

VapeVamp12 · 04/03/2022 10:49

My parents won a holiday to Canada with £1000 spending money and my BIL / SIL won a 2 week holiday to Thailand!

Edinvillian · 04/03/2022 10:55

I recently won £1000 on a Quidco competition for doing a home insurance comparison. Didn't even know that there was a competition and didn't read the email telling me that I'd won as thought it was junk. Only noticed when the money appeared in my Quidco account.

KylieCharlene · 04/03/2022 10:57

I won a £200 voucher from Mumsnet for posting a question on a Q&A guest thread.

deadlanguage · 04/03/2022 11:00

My dad has won loads of stuff from the radio, maybe that’s easier than online competitions! He also won a holiday, from a supermarket magazine I think. I won lunch with an author via a leaflet in the bookshop as well.

TheSpanishApartment · 04/03/2022 11:03

I won a hotel stay in a fancy hotel in wimbledon once.

FoxyFoxyLoxy · 04/03/2022 11:07

Of course people win. In the early days of the Internet (1998-2002 ish) I entered loads of competitions and won some great stuff including a pair of diamond earrings, flights and car hire in France and a posh £400 hamper. But hardly anyone was online.

A quick google tells me 12.7 people in the UK are Sky customers. If only 5% enter competitions, that's a 1 in 635,000 chance you'll be the winner. Hardly great odds.

Phos · 04/03/2022 11:16

I won a hot tub this week

Snozwanger · 04/03/2022 11:17

I won a £50 Dunelm voucher for sharing a pic of a product I'd bought on their local FB community page. Sometimes you do get lucky.

twoshedsjackson · 04/03/2022 11:20

I often solve the Griddler puzzle in the Sunday Telegraph. I have twice, in the past, won a £50 book token. The new prize is a Telegraph pen, and I keep trying. As it's a logic puzzle, it's mostly because it cheers me that I can still solve it; that pen would give me serious bragging rights!

Tillow4ever · 04/03/2022 11:59

A friend of mine used to enter a LOT of competitions. She won absolutely loads of stuff. So I tried it too. Won a fridge magnet (which I bloody love actually) and nothing more.

I think some people are very lucky. I don't think the majority of competitions are fixed, I just think a hell of a lot of people enter the comps with big prizes - and only 1 (or maybe a few) can win.

LangClegsInSpace · 04/03/2022 12:05

I won 'guess the weight of the cake' once. I popped in to a school fair on my way back from having DS weighed at the baby clinic. Hefting DS in one arm and the cake in the other, I reckoned they weighed about the same.
