Pancake conundrum

Prinnny · 01/03/2022 16:56

Okay, my DH thinks I’m weird AF so I need to seek opinions!

So growing up as a 90s kid I never had a sweet pancake, on pancake day we had ash and pancakes (ash being a stew with either beef or corned beef, onions, carrots, swede and potatoes).

I’ve just tried my first sweet pancakes, first one with Nutella and then one with golden syrup and I’m not a fan. For me it’s pancakes and gravy all the way! AIBU?

Your DH is right. I grew up in the 90s too and never had savoury ones, always lemon and sugar or syrup. Not Nutella though, I didn’t try that till I had DC myself and they asked for it. We have loads of toppings now but they’re always sweet.

Gowithme · 01/03/2022 16:59

Yes YABU - although I like them with bacon and maple syrup. Spread with nutella they are delicious.

Retrievemysanity · 01/03/2022 16:59

I’m an 80’s/90’s kid and it was always lemon and sugar. But I did like the findus crispy pancakes with mince and onion filling because I’m proper classy.

Chely · 01/03/2022 17:00

We have savoury and sweet pancakes, both are winners.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 01/03/2022 17:01

Always sweet in our

Cotswoldmama · 01/03/2022 17:01

I'm with your husband we always had sweet pancakes. I grew up in the late 80s/90s. We had lemon and sugar, chocolate spread and for the ultimate pancake ice-cream with marshmallow fluff and chocolate sauce!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 01/03/2022 17:01

House!

ChickenRat · 01/03/2022 17:02

My husband grew up in the Netherlands so we have savoury pancakes with ham and mushrooms, but we do put schenk stroop on them Smile never heard of gravy with pancakes but could be tempted to try it, I'd happily put gravy on Yorkshire puddings so it can't be that different

Feeellostindirection · 01/03/2022 17:03

Were the ones you used to have more like a large flat Yorkshire pudding? We did have those with ash in the 80s which were lovely, but also has the sweet ones with sugar in the top

SamMil · 01/03/2022 17:03

We always had sweet pancakes growing up (lemon & sugar). We have a combination now as husband prefers them savoury (cheese, onion, mushroom, tomatoes etc). But I've never heard of pancake and stew as a meal combination!

AFS1 · 01/03/2022 17:03

Pancake day is all about the sweet pancakes in this household and always was during my childhood. I’m not averse to a savoury pancake but it has to have cheese as a core filling. Beef stew and pancake is not something I’ve ever encountered.

Top pancake ever - add a crème egg to it and fold cooked pancake around it while still in the pan. So sweet it sets even my very sweet tooth on edge!

NarcissistsEyebrows · 01/03/2022 17:03

I like marmite, marmite+cream cheese, or for a change I sometimes like marmite+peanut butter

We have pancakes weekly and I rarely deviate from these

On pancake day I like a main course of pancakes with grated cheese and salad, maybe some ham. Then pancakes with a sweet filling for pudding- jam and cream cheese.

I'm a cheap date really

FlickyCrumble · 01/03/2022 17:05

I never knew savoury pancakes were a thing until I got taken to a Dutch (i think) savoury pancake restaurant at Holborn and then again on the Kings Road in London. Until then I was lemon and sugar kinda girl. IN fact the Holborn one did pancake pizzas.

EvilPea · 01/03/2022 17:06

We used to have chicken in a white sauce on them followed by sweet. The chicken was slop and grim.

However. Cheese and ham (in my meat eating days) or cheese and spinach

Yummmmy

mizzo · 01/03/2022 17:07

I've never had or heard of stew and pancakes but I have had syrup on Yorkshire pudding.

I only ever really had sweet ones as a child, born in the 80's, I tried a cheese one once but it was claggy.
Your problem is the Nutella and Golden syrup IMO they're gross on pancakes. Lemon and sugar or butter and sugar are the best.

Aprilx · 01/03/2022 17:10

Always with lemon and sugar when I was a child. Tonight I am planning a savoury one for dinner, with ham and cheese or similar and then a lemon and sugar one for afters.

Redwinestillfine · 01/03/2022 17:13

Savory pancakes have their place, but it's lemon and sugar for me on pancake day, and honey and berries for breakfast

lollipopsandrainbows · 01/03/2022 17:14

80s child here and it was always hash and pancakes. I've just made them for the kids with Nutella and I really didn't like them. Gravy all the way!

BuddhaForMary · 01/03/2022 17:17

Always sweet pancakes for us growing up, golden syrup or lemon and sugar. Never had a savoury one. Don't think I fancy one either!

Tiddlesthecat · 01/03/2022 17:23

It has to be savoury as well as sweet!
Cheese sauce and smoked ham and
Garlic mushrooms, spinach and a cream sauce.
Then lemon and sugar
And banana and chocolate
The savoury pancakes are the best part though.

SartresSoul · 01/03/2022 17:25

Haha I used to like the cheese ones as a child, haven’t had them for years!

ginslinger · 01/03/2022 17:25

I've never heard of Ash - only Hash.

Lightningrain · 01/03/2022 17:28

I’m with your DH. Save the gravy for Yorkshire puddings.

We always had lemon and sugar growing up but I am partial to American fluffy pancakes with maple syrup. I also like blueberry American pancakes or the traditional crepe style ones with maple syrup/fruit/Nutella.

HundredMilesAnHour · 01/03/2022 17:31

I grew up with lemon and/or sugar as a child (like many on this thread) but moved to France to study and that ruined me....now I'm ham, emmental and black pepper all the way.

ThinWomansBrain · 01/03/2022 17:34

Plain with lemon and sugar all the way Grin
although not been there for years, but used to love The Dutch Pancake House in Holborn although for years I generally chose such a big one i inevitably felt sick afterwards

My hotdesk space provided pancakes at lunchtime, which was great - about four different types of pancakes and lots of topping options, including savoury, fruit, and a myriad of syrups. Plain with Lemon & sugar still the best
