Pancake conundrum

Prinnny · 01/03/2022 16:56

Okay, my DH thinks I’m weird AF so I need to seek opinions!

So growing up as a 90s kid I never had a sweet pancake, on pancake day we had ash and pancakes (ash being a stew with either beef or corned beef, onions, carrots, swede and potatoes).

I’ve just tried my first sweet pancakes, first one with Nutella and then one with golden syrup and I’m not a fan. For me it’s pancakes and gravy all the way! AIBU?

I've never heard of Ash, only Hash (Corned Beef Hash). Is that the same thing?
Growing up in the 80s we just had lemon and sugar on ours and I still do. I find chocolate spread etc too sickly.

Recycledblonde · 01/03/2022 19:08

I am so excited to find someone else who had ash. We called it potato ash as it only had a tiny bit of beef in it. I loved it especially with brown sauce. Never had it with pancakes, (70s child) they were always with lemon and sugar and only on pancake day.

EthelTheAardvark · 01/03/2022 19:12

YABU. Pancakes with sugar and lemon are food of the gods. Mind you, I do like savoury as well, especially cheese or mushrooms in a savoury sauce.

Did you grow up in Leeds? It’s very common to have corned beef hash and pancakes there. I’m with you, having grown up on savoury pancakes, I can’t eat sweet ones at all.
ginslinger · 01/03/2022 19:18

I've wasted a lot of time googling Ash as a stew and can't get anything - is it a very localised thing? I'm really interested in this because I love learning about different dishes. Although I don't think I'd have pancakes with a stew

Libertybear80 · 01/03/2022 19:18

I grew up in the 80s we had sweet pancakes with lemon and sugar. Sounds like your parents were having you on to stop dental problems 🤣

nightwakingmoon · 01/03/2022 19:19

We only had them with lemon and sugar as children - and occasionally jam or honey - but I’m not averse to a savoury pancake. Had some of DD’s cheese and ham one earlier. I like dosa with south Indian curries and stews so I don’t see why pancakes and stew shouldn’t work.

As a kid I was fascinated by the stuffed pancakes in Erich Kastner’s Lisa and Lottie. Iirc the girl who liked them lived in a hotel, and stuffed pancakes (and goulash) sounded so exotic and glamorous; I wished so much I could try them!

Crankley · 01/03/2022 19:19

As a child of the 40s and 50s we always had lemon and sugar on pancakes, which I still have except the last time I had some apple and blackberries left over from making crumble which I put it inside the pancake. It was very yummy. Never tried savoury.

nightwakingmoon · 01/03/2022 19:21

Oh my mum also used to do stewed apple with cinnamon and brown sugar in pancakes sometimes too, which was lush.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 01/03/2022 19:27

I’ve just finished corned beef hash and pancakes as described op, I’m in the north too. Delicious!

LilacPaisley · 01/03/2022 19:28

"We did however have corned beef hash the day after pancake day - on Ash Wednesday"

Same. Never heard of "Ash"

heidihigh · 01/03/2022 19:29

Definitely sweet. Preferably with Nutella or just plain old lemon and sugar. Although, cheese & bacon pancakes are pretty good.

Sh05 · 01/03/2022 19:30

Child of the 80s here, always thin crepe like pancakes with lemon and sugar.
The dc like the American style ones with strawberries and Nutella though

TheLadySif · 01/03/2022 19:31

As a sixties child we always had sugar and orange juice on ours. We never had lemons. We did live in a small village so maybe oranges were more readily available than lemons.

LilacPaisley · 01/03/2022 19:34

"I've wasted a lot of time googling Ash as a stew and can't get anything - is it a very localised thing?"

I too was born near Leeds and my mother used to pronounce it "ash". It's really hash. It's the accent. I have it too so no offence intended.

Shostaklovhich · 01/03/2022 19:37

The Dutch eat savoury pancakes, it’s normal there, and I’m a big fan but I’m not sure whether with stew.
I have to say if I’m eating pancakes for a pancake day treat they have to be with sugar and lemon.

TheLoupGarou · 01/03/2022 19:41

My gran used to make 'potato ash' (hash) never had it with pancakes tho. (Manchester, 1970's/80's)

LuaDipa · 01/03/2022 19:45

I was just telling dh and the kids that my dgm used to make pancakes with onion gravy. I think the kids were a bit queasy at the thought but they were surprisingly tasty!

cptartapp · 01/03/2022 19:49

Lemon and sugar here as a child.
Sometimes syrup.
Peanut butter is lovely too.

HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 01/03/2022 19:54

I used to have sweet pancakes at home and pancakes with meaty gravy at my Nana and Grandads. Probably not all on the same day though

EatSleepReplete · 01/03/2022 19:55

DH quite likes them with stew, which I'm not keen on. I do like them with savoury fillings but I would prefer creamy leek & mushrooms, or ham & cheese. I definitely wouldn't go for one that involves gravy though. We do all like sweet pancakes, DH & DD like chocolatey fillings, I prefer sugar & lemon, or just fresh berries.

TriceratopsRocks · 01/03/2022 20:08

We've always had savoury pancakes as well as sweet. I cook pancakes topped with vegetables, covered in lovely thick gravy, sometimes with a bit of grated cheese sprinkled on the top. It's virtually the only way I can get DD (15) to eat any vegetables at all. And as pp's have said, not that much different from having yorkshire puddings with veg/gravy. But we all like 'pudding pancakes' (ie sweet ones) too. I always make the pancakes that are going with gravy much thicker/heavier than the sweet ones.

As a child I definitely used to have pancakes with a beef stew. I wonder if it's like the OPs 'ash' (in our house we had corned beef hash, but with beef always called it a stew, and for some reason a chicken stew was always called a casserole). Sweet pancakes were sometimes lemon/sugar, but i much preferred golden syrup or jam.

Prinnny · 01/03/2022 20:22

Yes Yorkshire not far from Leeds, my grandma used to make it. Think it must be a regional thing!

SouperNoodle · 01/03/2022 20:24

90s kid here and always had them with lemon and sugar. Now I'm an adult, I like them with butter and syrup

SpiceRat · 01/03/2022 20:47

90s child and only ever had them with lemon and sugar growing up. Had a bacon and cheese done a while ago, it was nice but pancakes are a sweet thing for me.

It’s not a weird concept though, pancakes are just Yorkshire pudding mix cooked differently but it still doesn’t sit right with me Grin
