AIBU to think nearly everyone has stopped wearing them?

At the weekend we visited a local tourist attráction, went swimming, went to the pub, went for a meal out, and went shopping. During this I saw no more than a handful of people wearing a mask?

@Dnaltocs seriously have you just said that?? A lower IQ!! That confirms everything I have always thought about the holier than thou mask brigade. Idiots.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 01/03/2022 18:56

@Dnaltocs

Interesting topic. Is it an intelligence test. Are those with a lower IQ not wearing masks? The scientists who have studied this, say wear them. The politicians say it’s not compulsory. Surely we must follow the advice from scientists. I’m with the scientists. It would be madness to bin our masks. Why listen to the madness of politicians!!
Haha brilliant 🤣🤣 I am amazed people think like this and then actually let the thoughts out of their heads.
cherryonthecakes · 01/03/2022 18:57

@Dnaltocs Are you wearing properly fitted N95 masks? I only have fabric ones and ime most people weren't wearing them properly so while you may have been protecting others, the majority of other mask wearers weren't protecting you.

Jeannie88 · 01/03/2022 18:57

Seems nack to normal and those who wish to continue to wear them their choice. I may be wrong in presuming but everyone who has covid recently, including my elderly Mum, has been fine, like a bad cold. Having worked throughout the pandemic with high risk in schools, I now have the first bloody cold in 2 years! X

cherryonthecakes · 01/03/2022 18:58

Round here, it seems to be an age thing. Plenty of older 70+ people in masks but most people aren't ime.

withernseawoes · 01/03/2022 18:58

Just about the only people wearing them round my way are the drug gangs, usually on bicycles, (and it's always the black masks, not the paper things), together with hoods up and often sunglasses too. Somehow I don't think it's fear of Covid that is prompting them to wear them.

Thisgroupneverceasestoamazeme · 01/03/2022 18:58

Virtue signaller over here too…I’m pretty disappointed in my fellow humans to realise how little they care about vulnerable people. They’re to protect other people not the wearer. It’s essentially saying ‘I value not wearing a mask more than I care about the lives of CEV people’ it’s a sign of our individualist culture. In many Asian countries people routinely wear a mask to protect others when they have a cold and have done for years.

I’m still wearing mine indoors because it’s the right thing to do however it feels pretty futile when I’m often one of only two or three people wearing one. I have direct and indirect contact with several people who would be much more likely to die/become seriously ill if they caught covid. Particularly as self isolation is being done away with.

KeepingAnOpenMind · 01/03/2022 18:59

Covid is over. Now we are worrying about WW3.

As a vunreable person. I say you're wrong. I don't wear a mask. I keep away from those that do. End of story. Don't think anymore about it.
fetchacloth · 01/03/2022 19:00

Supermarkets seem to be the only places where I've seen people still wearing masks.
Most people I know stopped wearing masks months ago, but I continued to wear mine in most places until last week.

MarvellousMonsters · 01/03/2022 19:05

@Hbh17

There is no longer any legal obligation to wear them anywhere in England, so the only astonishing thing is that some people are still doing so! Happily, tho, the numbers of mask-wearers are dropping steadily.
Happily??

You'll notice that they are still worn in hospitals. Almost like the healthcare staff don't think the need has gone away. Hmm

Libraryghost · 01/03/2022 19:06

Christ almighty. The Queen is 95 caught covid and carried on. What a bunch of whinging hypochondriacs the UK has become. I care very much about vulnerable people and keep away from others when I am ill but I am not spending the rest of my damn life in a mask. If you are that worried then it's best to dig a hole and sit in it because you cannot eradicate germs. We get ill and very elderly people die regardless whether you are a stick a bit of dirty cloth round your face or not. Unless you are wearing a sterile space suit and compulsively washing everything you touch you will come into contact with germs so best to stay in if you are that hysterical.

I hope people look at me, nearly 30 weeks pregnant and massive, lumbering around with my mask on and think I must be part of a drug gang Grin
Dnaltocs · 01/03/2022 19:08

I’m sad to read so many here are not wearing masks.
I’ll continue to wear mine. I care for my fellow folk and did hope they cared for me.
There’s an increase in funerals and that can’t be a coincidence.

Keep safe and it comes from my heart.

daisyrosie · 01/03/2022 19:09

I think it really depends on the environment. People are wearing them much less in shops, restaurants etc.

However, hospitals are currently keeping their rules on mask wearing, testing and social distancing the same as before for the time being. I'm pregnant at the moment and my maternity Hospital are keeping the same rules for testing prior to appointments and birth partners and visitors to hospital as before. Which to me means they feel that regardless of the government scrapping restrictions the nhs cannot afford for a surge of infections to happen.

Libraryghost · 01/03/2022 19:09

@MarvellousMonsters because they are in a sterile medical setting - I doubt they are all wearing them in Asda.

I care for 'most' of my fellow man too. Wearing a mask has no relevance.
ForeverDisenchanted · 01/03/2022 19:12

Oh well, I went to a few shops last week without a mask and promptly picked up some sh*tHmm, not sure if it’s a bad cold or covid, lateral flow tests are all negative (but they were also negative when my daughter had covid a few months ago) and now I’m back to wearing masks even at home, don’t really want to share whatever I have with the whole family.

Juno22 · 01/03/2022 19:18

I don't understand why people are bothered. It's not required to wear a mask any more in England. If people want to wear one that's up to them. Equally if people don't, that's up to them. Why are people judging each other? Live and let live. It's personal choice. Why are people getting stressed about what other people are doing?

Mermaid67 · 01/03/2022 19:18

@AlternativePerspective

There is no longer any legal obligation to wear them anywhere in England, so the only astonishing thing is that some people are still doing so! Happily, tho, the numbers of mask-wearers are dropping steadily. why? Masks should IMO be far more normalised, not just because of COVID but during cold/flu season.

People are far too obsessed with this wish to no longer wear a mask, interestingly it only seems to be the case in the UK,why is that exactly?

Personally I think that masks should be mandatory in the winter months, we would be far less likely to have high flu deaths and less people would have to take time off work or worse, have one cold after another after another because they have to sit next to people on buses, in shops etc who are coughing and spluttering all over the place.

Virtually everyone here is wearing a mask. Currently I have a cold, and I am certain nobody wants to catch that from me any more than they would want to catch COVID.

If you don’t want to wear one then crack on. But saying you’re happy others aren’t is bizarre.

So you want everyone to walk round looking like they’re in an apocalyptic world to protect people from illnesses that are natural and most people have effective immune systems for?
EthelTheAardvark · 01/03/2022 19:20

So you want everyone to walk round looking like they’re in an apocalyptic world to protect people from illnesses that are natural and most people have effective immune systems for?

"Most people"? With 6 million deaths from covid alone in two years?

Dnaltocs · 01/03/2022 19:25

Same in our family. I briefly stopped wearing a mask, then felt I should start again after feeling cold symptoms, runny nose, a headache and extreme tiredness. I’m sure I picked up some nasty bug or COVID but my COVID tests are clear. I think I got it when I went shopping without a mask. So masks on for now. It’s confusing when so many are not wearing masks.

Figgygal · 01/03/2022 19:26

Im still wearing them as just because boris removed restrictions to save his own shameless arse doesnt mean covid has gone away.
They dont bother me anyway

modgepodge · 01/03/2022 19:28

I honestly think the situation in Ukraine has pushed covid out of peoples thoughts to some extent. When mask rules were relaxed in England at the end of January, it was still in the need regularly, on social media etc etc. since the Russia/Ukraine situation I’ve barely thought about covid so remembering to bring a mask with me hasn’t happened, whereas a few weeks back I at least remembered to grab one in case. I do detest wearing them though and couldn’t wait to stop; and to be honest I also dislike other people wearing them as it’s like a reminder of the horrible past 2 years (and I struggle to understand people sometimes wearing them) - though of course I’d never say to someone they shouldn’t wear one if they prefer!!

Mary54 · 01/03/2022 19:29

Currently visiting the 🇬🇧 and feeling rather scared by the lack of masks and social distancing.
