To roll my eyes at these gifts

Birthday was recently and a relative bought me Star Wars oven gloves and dish clothes, as they know I love Star Wars. DPs birthday was in October and he was bought lovely t-shirts by the same relative.

Is it just me who thinks that handing someone kitchen gear as a gift is a little shitty? It's not just for the birthday girl, it's for everyone in the house 🙄

But they bought you something they thought you’d like? And it was practical. I like things I can use and I like Star Wars so I’m kinda jealous here!
Are you a bit of a baker/chef? Maybe that’s why you got a kitcheny gift.

T00Ts · 20/02/2022 21:06

I think they probably meant well, especially if you love Star Wars.

YABU. As a grown up I’d be happy with novelty housewares but not novelty clothing. Clearly you feel differently, but it was a nice idea.

Totalwasteofpaper · 20/02/2022 21:07

I couldn't get excited about this UNLESS it was from my mil there was back story.

musicalfrog · 20/02/2022 21:08

Mental note, don't buy people stuff they might like, in case they're ungrateful and post on MN about it Confused

Arabellla · 20/02/2022 21:08

YANBU, very sexist. Do you buy them thoughtful gifts. What’s a thoughtless gift you could buy them to make them go Hmm ?

Bitofachinwag · 20/02/2022 21:08

It's not always easy to think of suitable gifts. At least they got you something useful with a theme you like.

Not many people want oven gloves and dishcloths for their birthday. They took a shitty, easy option.
zoeFromCity · 20/02/2022 21:10

I see your annoyance. Yes, giving man gift for him and woman domestic equipment, unless she specifically wished for it, is at least lazy, sometimes stupid and often sexist.

Last summer I had a conversation with this some person and it happened to come into conversation that I would never buy a woman kitchen stuff because I think it's a little sexist, not to mention it's a household gift, so not really a gift for the person at all.

They completely agreed with me, and then bought me kitchen stuff 😅

I’d be thrilled. Not with Star Wars but with kitchen things. But I love to bake and cook. You must have given them the impression that you like cooking?

OinkyO · 20/02/2022 21:13

You're rude to roll your eyes at it. Just charity shop or ebay it.

Duchess379 · 20/02/2022 21:13

It was my birthday 2 weeks ago & I got nothing. So I'd take Star Wars themed goods as a win tbh.

If its the millenium falcon oven mitts, then they’re fab, we have them, alongside some pokèmon ones.

OinkyO · 20/02/2022 21:16

I didn't literally roll my eyes ah I see I misunderstood and thought you were being rude

Carry on internal rolling your eyes

WorriedMumsDontSleep · 20/02/2022 21:18

Good idea for my husband's next birthday.
I bet he's sick of star wars themed clothes and would enjoy some star wars kitchen stuff.

SpidersAreShitheads · 20/02/2022 21:21

Trying to play devil's advocate - could it be that they saw the Star Wars theme and got caught up in that, rather than thinking more carefully about the actual object?

We're big geeks in our household and I know that we've all definitely had gifts before where the focus was on the theme rather than the actual item.

Also, re buying your DH clothing - could it possibly be that his size is easier to buy for? It's generally easier to buy men's clothing whereas women's is a bit trickier (some stuff is very slim fit etc).

It would be very easy to jump to it being plain old misogyny, and maybe that's the truth, but I'm just offering up some potential other explanations.

Daenerys77 · 20/02/2022 21:23

Apply the principle of charity-assume the gift was kindly meant unless you have evidence to the contrary. You can always pass the stuff on to Oxfam.

Staffy1 · 20/02/2022 21:24

Who was the relative? If it’s a direct relative of your partner, it might be because they know their clothes size and it’s always easier to buy clothes for men (assuming it is a man) whereas a woman might not wear standard T-shirt type clothes.

ladygindiva · 20/02/2022 21:26

I'm a star wars nerd and I would love a star wars oven glove! Yabvvvvu

Luredbyapomegranate · 20/02/2022 21:27

I think they probably thought -ooh Star Wars! And got excited and nabbed them.

TBH if I were a SW fan I’d rather have kitchen gear as I like a jolly tee towel, and think anyone over the age of 13 wearing a themed t shirt should be SHOT. We all have our foibles..Smile
